Coming from 30k hours in Factorio, trains are pretty easy topic for me. But I can't get over how you don't have to make crossing tracks, you can just throw an overpass and merge single lane. That's honestly such a huge thing!
@harrisonlorens358516 күн бұрын
Thirty THOUSAND hours?
@BruceCarbonLakeriver4 ай бұрын
Well the path signal checks (or allows a train) if its path is free. If you have a train which wants to do a left turn and another one comes along from the direction the first train wants to go via its left turn they both are allowed in the same section. Something you can't do by simply blocking off the whole intersection. That's the major difference. I felt like it wasn't so clear in the video. Best Greetz!
@Churumbele4 ай бұрын
Can you elaborate on this?
@mustakragen61034 ай бұрын
@@Churumbele In case of intersection managed by block signals if any train in the intersection then others will wait. Which lead to "one train on intersection at the time" situation. In case of path signal, game check if path which train want to take through intersection is clear(not entire intersection) and if it is then train is free to go. You can imagine 2 trains coming from opposite directions and both want to go straight. In that case both "paths" are clear and they would go through intersection simultaneously, but in "block" scenario 2nd train will wait until first train leave intersection
@BruceCarbonLakeriver4 ай бұрын
@@Churumbele Well, the path signal doesn't only check if a block is allocated by (an)other train(s) it also checks for the path, hence the name. If the trains have a path each which doesn't cross the path of the other, both are allowed in the block. Therefore you need to use path signals on crossroads and junctions, especially if you have a dual rail system (each rail does have its own direction, like IRL). If you'd use block signals for crossroads and junctions you'd kill the actually possible flow of the railroad b/c the block signal literally blocks all other trains from getting into its block as along as a train is occupying the block. If you have a train coming from the left and wants to take a right turn and yours is attempting a right turn on your side then a block signal would block the other train until yours has left the block while the path signal would allow both trains to enter the block b/c your paths do not cross. Using the path signal is (to me) mandatory at crossings and dual rail system junctions. I hope this helps and feel free to ask if there is anything you want to know :))

I don't believe it's right at 5:53. You say that that the path signal is red if there's a train in the vicinity. Path signals allow approaching trains to reserve a path through the junction. So when a train arrives, if there is a clear path out of the junction (and the exit light is green), and no bits of track in the junction have been reserved by another train, it will allow the train through. So, it will be red IF its path through the junction is not used by any other trains in the junction. What's cool about this is that trains coming from opposite directions, that don't turn off, can still travel through the junction, at speed, and go past each other without stopping.

I'm having a problem finding any videos with loading and unloading trains to make sure each load/unload goes to the right place with the right amount. An example would be I want to have a smelting factory that sends out ingots to 3 different factories (Screws, Rods and plates), Currently I am making 1800 ingots/min and I want to send 600/min to each factory evenly with 3 different trains and then eventually send trains from each of those factories to send those materials to higher tier parts (Heavy modular frame factory needs like 1270 of the 2400 I will be making). That plus an explanation on the stop settings for the timetable with the and/or wait for x seconds.

I think l have something that might help you. If you add another freight platform and put a smart splitter between the first freight platform and the buffer, set it to overflow to the new platform. You'll maximize how much you can move. I learned this recently

The way I look at it for Block Signals & Path Signals; A Block signal looks at the next Block ahead & blocks the train if the next block is occupied. Meanwhile; a Path Signal looks at the next 2 Blocks. The Path Signal checks if the last of the 2 Blocks is occupied, then the Path Signal checks if there is anything blocking the train that is currently stopped at it. With path signals, you can have multiple trains passing through a junction at once, as long as all the path signals agree that none of the trains entering will block each other. A Block Signal only junction is all stop signs. While a Path Signal junction is more like a traffic light.

If you just have one big factory this might work fine. But if you start to set up dedicated factories for specific products that you produce in large quantities, using specific recipes that can't just be thrown down near any single node, and then distribute to everything upstream that needs them (steel, plastic, rubber, etc.), it is so much easier to manage and expand that distribution using trains than belts. Plus, you don't have to upgrade train tiers when you hit a new milestone like Mk3 miners and want to improve your throughput.

I'm very new to trains but I've grasped how to set them up now. Something I'm still unsure about, that videos don't seem to cover, is how to set up stations in a scalable way. I was trying to make trains send resources back to a central station, but as that central station got longer, I had to add more and more empty platforms and empty freight cars to send the resources to the right position at the central station. Would you create many stations in one location to address this? Or something else?
@KyloBuilds4 ай бұрын
One thing about trains is you can have multiple trains drop off items at the same station. As long as your belt sleep can handle the total speed, you can "sushi" belt trains. Sometimes that can help save space when you have lower throughput.

This might be a very primitive question, but how does distribution management work? Example: if you have a train with 2 wagons, filling in iron and copper seperately in one single station, but unloading the material on two seperate stations that have only one platform to unload. Will it pick the right wagon for that? Or what will happen if the slot for loading copper is in the front of a station at one place, but in the back in a second location?
@FalconDS94 ай бұрын
unfortunately, you need every station long enough for your longest train if you want to have multiple stops for it. each wagon needs its own platform. train engines only stop at the station, they are not going to position a second wagon on a single platform. if you want to use double headed trains and terminus stations (train drives in foward and out backwards), getting the correct wagon to the correct platform gets complicated because you have to avoid situations where the train would turn around, like driving trough a normal station or a turnaround loop. that would flip everything around... dont mix and match train types. most simple solution would be, more trains, just long enough for each task. and maybe smart splitters plus sink to filter the cargo at each unloading station, to prevent stuff getting on the wrong belts.
@classic-doll2564 ай бұрын
How do you deal with inputs that exceed a single belt? I got 3x bauxit miners overclocked and theyre producing: 780 - 780 - 600. How would you load this into your train? In an ideal world, Id balance the 3 belts into 4 and feed them into 4 train freight stations, but then you run into issues when one of the stations becomes full. The same principle applies if you use programmable splitters with overflow. What do you recommend? Could send 1 belt into 1 freight each and call it a day, but then I kinda want to keep track of how much im putting into each freight if im using a 2nd bauxite train no?

You explained the path signal WAY wrong. You said it asks if there is a train in "this vacinity" as you motioned toward the intersection and then said; if it says yes; the train will stop... etc. What it actually does is reserve a path for the train so that 2 trains can travel the intersection at the same time without crashing when possible.
