That thought about your skill level affecting your perception of a monster is a good one Though, I fought my first Velkhana before Zamtrios and I still prefer Zamtrios Though, since I started with Rise, neither were my first ice monster. That honor goes to Lagombi and Goss And to give points to your argument, I do think Goss is one of the best ice monsters, right after Zamtrios. His fight is just so fun. Zamtrios though just has such a unique design and the ice armor makes him look even cooler than he already did and the balloon form is so goofy. Zamtrios is the pinnacle of monster design in this series. His visual design is perfect and his forms are super cool and super unique and funny respectively. He's just great

Also, I haven't played 4U yet (though I picked it up on sale recently cause the eshop is closing soon) but I have been playing a lot of GU And yeah, I miss the minigame aspect of Meownster Hunters in Rise/Sunbreak. In GU it's sorta like a mix between curling and a cannon shooting minigame. You launch little discs representing your palicos out of a cannon onto a board where they bounce around. There are target circles on the board representing different rewards and wherever your palico stops, those are the rewards they'll bring back. You control the angle they're shot from and the power of the canon (via a timing mechanic) It'd weird to explain, but if you saw it for a second, you'd understand what I mean lol

7:22 That's Baleful Gigginox and yea this version is nightmarish And no having no music is cool for the atmosphere of the monster. As a Gigginox fan, I guarantee you that most people find the 2 monsters as unbearable as each other. Also i think people prefer Gigginox over Khezu cuz he has an overall even better design.Don't get me wrong, Khezu has also a great design but the fact that the monster is pretty ( he has better colors : dark skin + neon purple eyes is a sick combo) to look at while keeping the creepy vibe. It leads people to prefer Gigginox. Personally I prefer the Gigginox fight, at least you don't wait for him, he stays pretty mobile, doesn't wait for hours for him to finish his animations / attacks. In addition the gigginox has a more fluid acrobatic style, like I really like its backflip animations. Shame that he didn't benefit the better verticality since 4th gen

That thing you said about nostalgia goggles is mad true. Its partially the reason why my number 1 and 2 favorite monsters are from Tri, my first game. Deviljho and Alatreon respectively.

These are all the reasons why Khezu is worse than Gigginox 1)- Khezu has no music 2)-Khezu is literally a walking dingaling 3)- he has some AWFUL hitboxes 4)- he constantly spams both the electric field attack and the paralysis attack 5)- it's annoying as fuck to knock Khezu off the walls and ceiling 6)- Khezu has virtually remained unchanged until Sunbreak. the only stuff that was added was thunderblight and the climbing which only serve to make him more annoying 7)- Japan actually finds this thing to be cute for some god forsaken reason 8)- his equipment is garbage compared to other thunder element monsters like Zinogre and Tobi Kadachi 9)- Constantly screaming which requires Hg earplugs and only serves to drag out the tedium even further

The Meowster Hunters mini game in MH4U is the best extra item gathering method in MH and I wish they would implement something like it again. It is not necessary, but it is nice and engaging feature and is more fun than just watching a cutscene/animation sending them off such is the case for Trenya, the buff Moga Fisherman, Tail Raiders and the Meowcenaries. I don't know what system Portable 3rd had. Generations had that cannon segment which is fun, but it can be annoying if you want farm something specifically for one of the unique weapons you get it from it. I remember the Light Bowgun and Great Sword that looked they were made from Gold encrusted with diamonds were somewhat popular in base Generations. The only annoying element with the Meowster Hunters are the G-Rank routes with Elder Dragons.

7:39 From what I recall, Khezu has never had a theme because for a theme to start, the monster has to see you. It has no eyes to navigate and akcnowledge you directly, so its essentially feeling something out to defend itself. It's a weird technicality but an interesting lore bit.

Basarios has a cool looking subspecies in G rank, but with your pledge and the fact it has no normal quests/isn't required for progression you're likely not going to encounter it. It's a shame because I like how it looks. I had to grind just to be able to see it.

The blue veins on Basarios' back were because the cutscene had you mounting him. By toppling him with the mount, it broke his back. For extra fun, next time try getting a second mount--and topple--when you fight one. Any jump attacks add invisible "mounting damage" until you trigger the effect, just like any other one like sleep or poison. Expeditions should also say if there is a poogie costume available on the map. Keep an eye on palico enthusiasm. The higher it is, the more likely they are to active their skills in the minigames. The positions of the palicos you set as first-stringers doesn't matter, just the numbers. Which one you choose to deploy with will not affect Classy except for their combo skill.

Random tip with finding palicoes during hunts, the game itself doesn't say anything about this. But every map usually haves a certain type of palico, I forget which ones are where, though. Maybe someone here can give a list, figured I'd point this out.

My first ice monster that stuck was Barioth and yeah, I think that's still my favorite. I remember learning how to time my attacks so I could actually cut its freaking tail off and I love the mechanic of breaking its wings to slow it down. Such a great monster. The funny thing is that it changed a ton multiple times. I remember in Tri, it was more like an icy Nargacuga, but then in 3U, they gave it thew hipcheck, which turned the fight into a much more brute-ish feel. And then in Iceborne, they took that and made it even better. Zamtrios is great though. I love shooting its ball form with pierce ammo.

Personally, the reason I like Gigginox over Khezu is it's movement, what other monster does back flips and front flips literally over you? It's a fun fight that involves movement, while Khezu is mostly a "stay close, step back when charged, stay close" fight, making it mostly still, while Nox makes you react more, making it more engaging. The Poison/Paralysis of both monsters can be equally "annoying" and easy to dodge with skill 🤷🏻‍♂️ No need for armor skills unless you really want them to be added.

I love monster hunter 4 for alot of reasons but one of my biggest high light moments for me was seeing this serpent for the first time. I to this day love gore magala and serpent monsters best then everything else. Edit: and fish last I hate them all.

A bit of Khezu trivia: The batlle themes only start playing when a monster "sees" you (signaled by the red eye icon). Back in Monster Hunter 1-2, Khezu, being blind could never trigger the "see" state (so no theme, nor last resort belly jump for evades). The thing is since mh4, Khezu does trigger the spotted state (welcome back last resort belly jump evade), but per tradition by now, it's "theme" is silence.

Fun thing about basarios from old games that you had no mining spot indicator. And Basarios back looks just like mining rocks from volcano map. So you would go there, try to mile stuff and it would turn out to be a basarios. And then he would hide between rocks fooling you.

In regards to basarios, 2 things. -I believe chat said It During the stream, but Basarios legs are a "soft" point, perfect for phial charging. - I got curious about basarios blue rocks. You may not know since he Is everwood exclusive, but Basarios by default doesn't have them, the rocks only show when Its back Its broken (which basarios being basarios, Its hard to see them again withou mounting), mh4 sometimes pits you againts already broken monsters (for example, the dah ren moran at the beggining). Can't find a clip of Rise basarios with a broken back to confirm if the back blue rocks aré still there, but broken face do show nice blue rocks (which you've probably seen but didn't notice due to g5 colores, like rathian greenenesd and wing patterns). I played GU and During al my basarios hunts I can't remember seing blue rocks. So enjoy the blue rocks for the first and probably last time you'll see them

I'm going to be honest, monsters that are more interesting are always in low/ high rank. I find after that they all become dragons (with few exceptions - no spoilers for Jay if he plays GU in future) that just while look cool don't vary much. Sure they're cool but the lower monsters have so much personality that tends to disappear later on.

Meownster hunters, besides being just a little bit more confusing at the beggining since It Is't automatic (by default at least, un meownster hunters you can ONLY get Palico scraps (and as far as I can tell being un LR6, Its also your only source), whereas un Meowcenaries you get scraps+materiales. In that regard, meownster hunters doesn't feel as rewarding or inmediately useful like passive farming (and don't know about late game, but so far upgrading Palico gear isn't a necessity)

Monster Hunter 4U has so much charm. It wasn't my first game, but I regard it as one of my favorites in the series. I do agree that Rise does seem to lack that charm a bit. I love some of the quality of life changes in Rise, but it comes at a cost. Sunbreak was better, but I don't get that urge to come back when there is something new because it's just unlocked after the story.

Yeah, the 5th gen as a whole really dropped a lot of the goofiness that we love in the old world. Rise was kind of going back in the right direction, but I hope the next gen brings back that lost charm instead of streamlining the experience even further.

For me, the reasons I like gigginox better is, 1: Bias. MH3 was my first MH game and 2: overall Design. Gigginox looks a lot cooler to me, especially when it gets mad and then turns purple. The roar is better, the armor is better, its moves are better, and its arena where you first encounter it was better. In classic MH3 it was SO dark in the cave that you pretty much needed a torch to fight and it was extra scary cause Noxxy boy gloooows in the dark. Im sorry, Nox is peak.

Najarala is one of my favorite monsters, and one of the first full armor sets I made in MH4U (first Earplugs set FTW). The urgent quest to hunt Gore Magala was my "wall" (just like Diablos was your "wall" back in World) I also prefer Gigginox to Khezu generally, and this is coming from a 4th Gen hunter having fought Khezu first. Khezu's lack of a BGM is actually neat, but the design just looks awkward and uncomfortable and the fight isn't particularly memorable (outside of the occasional paralyze/stun combo which is memorable for the wrong reasons). In fact, as firsts impressions go Khezu actually seemed kind of "easy", similar to Nerscylla where it felt like I was generally on top of the situation the entire hunt long.

Started playing when both Tigrex and Yian Garuga were considered new, and while I learnt how to appreciate and enjoy older monsters and their fights back in the day, most of my favorite monsters are newer ones and I sincerely find some of the older monsters to be dragging down newer games. Monsters such as Gypceros, Khezu, Tigrex and Kushala. I loved Kushala in 2nd Gen but despised his presence in both 4th Gen and the first half of 5th with World. Why bring back him if his role is just being annoying? I'm thankful they finally made him fun on Rise but damn dude. Gypceros hasn't even gotten to find redemption and believe me, it'll only get WORSE later on, gypceros is a disgrace. They just keep insisting on making his fight as unfun as possible. Tigrex was designed to be a more efficient version of a flying wyvern back then, and served his purpose for a while, but nowadays his presence means nothing and his fight is rather meh, specially on 4th Gen, his subspecies and deviant do all the work while the standard version just exists. And Khezu just exists for the joke. I understand Gigginox can be harder to keep up with if you're not good with positioning but at least it's an actual fight and an actual design, not a pp that screams and spams a "Stay away for 3 seconds" aoe. But alas, he's more popular so he's the one that keeps coming back. Also yeah Snake monsters exist, you're in for a treat in this one and I wholeheartedly agree Velkhana is the better ice monster, Zamtrios is not far behind but he can be annoying at times, at G rank.

Old Khezu is at best pesky, at worst boring. The dingdong shape is funny. I play with external audio anyways. I prefer gigginox in design, the fight, and the gear. Having to move around it, pre-build in the poison or bring a shield, the flipping enraged, the giggi...it takes time, sure, and it really might not be worth it, but beyond fighting for gear, beyond bringing the best weapon which is probably a slime axe, an unawakened mizar's asterism, or the goddamn grongigas which I still don't know how to build to actually get out of it what everyone sees, same as the kelbi bow I tried Helios X, tried both spam and charged shot, concentrating on slime or on all ailments and still don't get the absolute swiss cheese I was promised. For Gigginox I bring in that old reliable Dire Miralis Lance and I think I often Lance with a mixed Agnaktor set but because Glacial rocks so hard, that Lackadaisy lazy day guard could be nice. Or go hardkhore with the abyssal set I ground. Mmm, choices...but, the Lance remains great. Precision. Precision to hit the right spots on it, the vertical stab hits its giggi sack on its back nicely or it can poke it off walls...ahh, lovely times.
