The joy of thrift stores: IT'S THE HUNT! My best find was a 25 cent book at a library sale - it was a yearbook from the US Army's Cavalry School (at Ft. Riley, Kansas) from the year that then-Major George Patton attended the school. It included an essay by MAJ Patton. It made the very best present I ever gave to my brother - a US Army Armored Cavalry officer.

Mikayla Skierski, I went to a local Hospital Auxiliary (Hazel Hawkins in Hollister) several years ago when they were fixing to move to a bigger place. The sign said, "All Womens' Clothing $1.00" so I took all 6 real leather coats & jackets to the register. The girl questioned it, manager was brought up, she said the sign said..., sell them to her for $1 !!!! I STILL wear them, one is a gorgeous calf-length duster, another is designer waist-coat, another a brown bomber, another biker-type; the rest I have to family!!!!

I went once to a cute thrift store in a small town where i used to live. There was a fill (STUFF!!!) a paper grocery bag for $3 apiece special major sale. I found the two most awesome red and camel knee-length leather fitted coats. Both truly vintage i believe. They didn't mark them as not for sale in the brown grocery paper bag sale but hesitated greatly on allowing that major steal. I still feel that $20 each was an amazing find. Alas both are dead now. One, i got too heavy for and the sleeves ended up being too short anyway and no returns (red one and SUCH beautiful color. Blue-based vivid red...maybe cross between cherry, candy apple and strawberry reds. Or the color British Red Coat like the iconic L'Oreal lipstick shade or cherries in the snow lipstick by Revlon...but as usual i seriously digress.) I wore that camel coat every day in fall and winter and even early spring, until i wore it out from daily use. The loss and grief was overwhelming...just kidding.

thrift used to be good for me, I have an extensive collection of vintage dresses, however, during the past year or year and a half I notice that they're pricing the items really high, local shops, goodwill, salvation, anywhere..... and tip #33, it's a lesson hard learned, when buying clothes don't take them straight home, even if you spend a little extra time and money, take them to the dry cleaners or the washateria, cloth moths can hide very very well even if you think it's clean, the getting rid of those suckers and the damage they can cause to your other items is not worth it
@laurie42756 жыл бұрын
Monalisa Menno I stopped shopping Goodwill, because their prices are higher now than several discount retailers. A manager once told me, they price items according to their "typical retail value". That's so wrong. And I even see a lot of Dollar Tree items in there, priced from $5 - $10. They KNOW they're ripping us off.
@blondwiththewind6 жыл бұрын
Monalisa Menno ... OR you could take large plastic bags (trash bags etc.) and put the clothing in it and tie it closed....those moths can't get into your home that way, and you've got extra time to plan a trip to the laundromat in a day or two.

Different thrift stores, you'll find, have a different "flavor" if you go there often. I have three in my area I shop often, and I've learned A has great handmade quilts a lot, B has really good clothing my size, and C has furniture and art I like. All three stores sell all those things, but each one has it's own pool of donators, which influences what exactly they have to sell.
@keithparkhill83218 жыл бұрын

Fun story; I've found brand new American Eagle jeans and Lululemon active wear in one Goodwill once! Best trip ever!!! Another good tip is going to the Goodwill or yard sales in wealthy and/or established neighborhoods! That's where the high quality stuff is! One time I went to a community yard sale in a retirement neighborhood, one man was hosting an estate sale for his sister who had passed on, and she was a world traveler! I picked up gorgeous art and antiques from Haiti, Iraq (pre-Saddam), and Italy. Like you said, gold is where you find it...

These were such great tips! One thing I do when thrifting is to just look at colors and patterns as I go through the racks. If I love the material, then I look at the style, size, price, etc. That way, I find stuff in unexpected places and I can even consider altering something if I like it enough. Also, sidenote: you know that saying, "Wear your clothes, don't let your clothes wear you"? I feel like you're one of those people that it doesn't matter what you're wearing, you just rock it so confidently and comfortably! You are #goals. 😊

Yes, I understand completely when you encounter a designer luxury item at bargain prices....it is amazing. I attain a authentic beautiful Black Leather, Mens Coach Legacy tote bag for $80.00. Which retail for $700 or $800 in excellent condition. I gotten a timeless Mens full length Blk. Shearling coat for $15.00 Which retail for any where from $1200 or $2000 depending on where you purchase new like Neiman Marcus or Barney's of New York. Many other wonderful fines over the years thrifting. I go frequently least one a month and donate some items back once done with items and get a receipt for my taxes for charitable donations. Thanks for the great tips ! My favorite thrift store finds are all kinds of furniture that does not wobble . I spray it white and put on folk art paintig between the handles and several mismatched pieces are looking like a match. Great for Kids room and be creative with the paint. and ideas. How about a dresser in sky blue and straight stipes to top and paint daisies across top drawer. add lady bugs, etc. birds. etc. I did this for bedroom furniture for adults this way: I ainted over the brown with black enamel ( prie first ) I added brass oval handles and I put a stencil in between the handles in red. This looked like beautiful Chinese black, gold and red bedroom set ( the red was for the stencil - just a bit ) Merry Rodgers

Bring socks along with those slip off shoes! In case you find a pair of sneakers or something, but you don't want to put your bare feet in them Some of my best thrift finds have been maxi skirts. The area I'm in has a pretty large religious community (many dress on the modest side) and we have theme parks near by (some look like costume/uniform wear) so I get to pick up lots and lots of long skirts for less than $4. I JUST found some on the H&M website 2 days ago! I didn't even know they carried home goods but they do! it's it's own whole section! I guess it's new. But I got some really nice covers (20x20) for $4.99 I think? maybe $5.99...

My best find was last year at my local "Sally"! I found an odd looking shirt of a brand I'd never seen before. The logo was a strange looking "B", which I had never seen before. It was a silk and cotton blend. What was really interesting was that it had a cutout on the cuff for a watch to show through. It had a yellow $6.99 tag ..... but that day yellow tags were a dollar. I bought it. When I got home I looked up the logo .... It stood for "Billionaire"! It turned out to be a $1,000 contour shirt!

Fantastic Tips! Best thrift store find for me was a Lane brand microfiber sectional with two reclining ends for $65. The underside was pristine, but it took my husband, and myself using oxyclean and my little green clean machine to get the fabric clean. Turned out like new. So another rule is Get it while the gettin' is good. Cost to us for that one was a bucket of Oxyclean and a truck rental for $25. So the whole thing including the sectional was about $100. Best score ever! Wish our Goodwill had the sale days like yours.

One time I found these beautiful Calvin Klein high waisted jeans. Could barely sit down in them so I cut them into shorts. Eventually grew out of them though. Still, they were amazing!

Best thing was a white linen dress from Gap which I would totally overlook anywhere else but it fits me so well and is amazing for hot summer days.

These tips are awesome. However, I used to work at Goodwill. When it was summer we didn't push sweaters and long sleeves. And vise versa, when it was winter we didn't push as many summer clothes. Also, cashiers usually, at least in the case of my store, don't have any control over the price. But it is nice to be NICE- because they will definitely take care of your stuff better and be more helpful!

@@rhondamontgomery4043 I've heard that the item has to be on the store floor for one day before workers are allowed to buy it; however there have to be at least *occasional* shenanigans taking place...hiding things and what not. But I don't think I could work at a thrift store--I'd be perpetually frustrated and tempted.

Whenever I watch these videos I get so jealous, as we don't really have thrift stores in the UK. We have 'charity shops' but they're nearly always tiny... It's just not the same. I did however once find this amazing grey wool bomber jacket, very COS - like. And a grey matte dinnerware set, so good!

Ruth Leslie - I visited a friend in Edinburgh, and found quite a few of those charity shops... some great finds there. Morningside was a treasure trove.

Rule #32 Before going out and buying something new that you want/need spend a few weeks looking at thrift stores. Rule #33 Think ahead for gifts. If the item is in good condition no one will care that it came from a thrift store. Especially antiques. Rule #34 When looking for clothes go alone so you can take your time, when looking for furniture take someone with you. Rule #35 Drop off items at thrift stores you go to less so that you don't see your old items and feel regret.
@heymaryelizabeth8 жыл бұрын
+Amanda Jacqueline Nice!! Great tips. I DEF agree on #35. LOL. Not that I have regret but it's so weird to walk around and see your old stuff FOR SURE!!
