My planned battleline for my 2k list early next year will be literally 18 Squigs and 20 Grots. The rest of the list is elites and heroes as well, but the Gitz get so many units per point it's hardly important. Zarbag's Gitz helps cover a bit of the hole in the frontline as well since they come with another Netter plus a Fanatic. 78 furious models with 173 total wounds and a good amount of 4+ saves, plus some -1 hit auras and strong FNPs on the mages as well as the Troggoths. Good magic, a couple very good endless spells, drown in CP generation and plenty of mobility for the Squig portion of the army. The only caveats are their Bravery meaning that they need to wait to generate CPs for Inspiring Presence and that they need to play to 1/4 of the board early on as that's likely where the Bad Moon (their buff aura) is going to be. Basically, the list will be mostly tucked into a corner at the start of the game haha.

@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's why I mentioned the seasoned collector looking to pick up another army (even if it's the first specifically AoS one) - for someone brand new to wargames in general, not so much. LoA's competitive statistics are truly abysmal, but I blame the fact that so few people play the army, that you can hardly count their statistics as legitimate. Depending on your ally choices it will hugely affect their strength, as allies is where you get the allegiance abilities they don't have, in a way of thinking about it. I bet it's possible to tool up a Good list, but most will be underdogs with surprise heat.

The big flaw in AoS (from an outsider’s perspective, although one who has learned much about the game and watched many battle reports) to me seems to be that far too many armies have only a few good units that are worth taking (ie Deepkin with their eels) so for many armies it seems like the strategic depth of list building you see in 40k just isn’t there because if you want a halfway competitive army your list is basically 75% already written for you. This is made worse by the approach GW is taking to the game of more specialized but significantly smaller factions when compared to Fantasy or 40k. This could be cool, as I actually could like the idea of having more factions with each being fairly specialized and distinct, but for this to work since they all have significantly less of a unit range than Fantasy or 40k most of the units in each army needs to be viable. Then there could actually be some in depth strategic list building and varied armies and approaches in each faction even though some have only like 10-13 units to chose from, if most were decent in moderately competitive play. But with factions like the Deepkin and Sylvaneth where you only get literally a few (or less) viable units playing such an army loses much of its appeal since you know your Deepkin Eel army is going to be almost identical to everyone else’s Deepkin army. I really don’t see how GW fucked up some armies so much with having 80% of the list be traps/trash. I know every army is not like this... Cities of Sigmar of course has much variety and many viable builds but it is in a category of its own. Stormcast also of course has many units but that’s only because GW treats their Sigmarines like they are treating Primaris Space Marines with giving them way more releases than anyone else. I’d be curious if any experienced AoS player would care to critique my views here, as I know that as an outsider I could be wrong but this I what I’ve observed. I’m considering getting into the game with Lumineth as I’ve always been a High Elf/Eldar fanboy but their list is quite small considering they just had their codex released and therefore won’t be getting new releases for some time.
@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
I could do a video on it and organize a big list to see numbers, but to help parse, is the complaint too many factions have to spam, or that many battletomes are essentially 'solved' so you play X, or both. At what point do you consider a list spam? Is 2 reasonably different builds enough for a faction to be fine? Points of agreement: An embarrassing % of garbage warscrolls/rules Being forced to spam is bad Points of pushback: Brand new AoS armies (Fyre, NH, KO, OBR, seemingly lumineth) don't tend to spam, IDK is basically unique in this regard. I don't know much about 40k so I can't speak on the primaris vs stormcast thing. They got a million models dumped on them early on in the game's life but they mostly sucked, then in 2018 had a 2nd ed book that was weak with some decent sarcosanct models and nothing in the 2 years since.
@briancline73494 жыл бұрын
HeyWoah , that does sound like a good idea for a video. I would say that while my complaint is “both”, I would say that the issue of as you put it too many battletomes being essentially “solved” seems more prevalent than factions that force spamming. I’d say a factions whose viable build(s) are only some HQ’s and then two units are definitely spammy. Sometimes even three unit types can still seem spammy depending on how the list is built (and if that is what you always tend to see with that faction it’s a problem even if it’s not actually spamming). On the other hand moving on from spam, I would say factions need more than two viable, decently competitive builds (perhaps only two “tournament level” min/maxing builds are fine if the faction has other builds that are strong and viable but not up to “pro” levels of play). I guess by “decently competitive” builds I mean builds that are in general “good”, that an experienced if not expert player would make and be happy with, and that he could take to his local store and do reasonably well against other people who are pretty into the hobby and strategic minded... if he can’t usually beat people who seriously power game and use tournament “net lists with that list that’s cool though. So yeah I’d say a faction needs at least three “semi competitive” builds at the minimum, but only two tournament winning level builds is acceptable. The more serious games played on Miniwargaming are what I am describing as “semi competitive”, or someone like Winters SEO who makes lists that are both designed to win and have some good fluff as well. In conclusion I’d say there should definitely be AT LEAST three semi competitive builds per faction, and those builds should not be spammy ie they should feature at least three unit types to be fun and interesting (horde factions have different standards for what is “spam” of course). I know AoS is not 40k or Fantasy and they are going for smaller and more “niche” factions but I still think what I said is reasonable and necessary to have a good balanced game that actually allows for strategy and creativity in list building as that’s a key part of war gaming. For example I really don’t see the appeal of buying a Deepkin army when you know your army will have to be, just like every other Deepkin army out there, mostly eels, some characters and then a small amount of some other unit.

Hey thanks, this should be an interesting vid. Unless they've done a 180 in the last year, the AoS games played on miniwargaming are extremely beer and pretzels - to the point that if that's the reference for semi competitive, then most factions have half a dozen such lists available. Winters SEO seems to only do 40k content so I have no frame of reference for how competitive those reports/lists are.

Brian, the spam youre seeing is a two fold issue. the first of which is battle line and battalion. This makes any single army look very same-y. The second issue is the model ranges just aren't that large. Especially compared to 40k which is a bigger product. There is a quite a bit of list diversity when you start digging into individual battle tomes and consider allies. So the perspective from the outside is somewhat gated

I don't play AoS, but as a 40k player I can tell you that almost every army (loyalist Space Marines being the notable exception) has issues of only small percentage of units being good. Hell the Tau had only three to four usable units last edition, and I personally basically gave up on playing pure Daemons because of this. It's very much an issue for most armies.

Really hope the Storcast "why play" video is out soon. I kind of ended up with a big army out of nowhere haha

The first and only time I played a Nighthaunt army, I got 10+ on every charge on the first turn. I literally deleted a whole army of stormcast eternals in a single turn. The Nighthaunt are now legally confined to the shelf if I ever want to play AoS with any of my friends.
@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
Hey, 16.7% of the time it works every time. Bring them off the shelf, your friend should be fine - stormcast got buffed :)

I love that you referred to the underdogs as underdogs instead of ‘weak armies’

You didn't even mention The Gloomspite Gitzs real stars: The Troggoths!
@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
That's more for a faction focus than a 25 second blurb about the army since troggoths are a fine 3-6man supplement to a GSG army but not something to build your army around unless you know what you're getting yourself into. Consequently, I do talk about them in my gitz faction focus!

@@HeyWoah there must be some viability for a troggoth only army as I saw one spank the hell out of a storm cast eternal army
@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
@@potato13holiday4 suboptimal does not mean totally incapable of winning - especially against other casual lists. However - the new white dwarf has a very interesting new subfaction for trogs - one that I think makes them good!

What does it mean when we describe an army as a "castle army"?
@HeyWoah4 жыл бұрын
A few have asked so I'll include in the next q&a video, but it's a deployment with lots of chaff surrounding a goodstuff magic/shooting army that as long as they can keep the opponent off of them while they ramp up, they can start controlling the game and sending silver bullets at opposing units.
