you really should finish out the game next time. If you don't capitulate the allies will eventually win. (well they will still win even if you capitulate. You just won't be alive to see it.) The only reason Germany is doing so well is because normally the USSR are helping the allies to defeat Germany, but this game because of you dragging the allies into a war with the USSR the USSR and allies are splitting their attention dealing with each other giving Germany more of an opening. However, even with this reality even if the USSR capitulates you will still win because Germany will run out of men before the allies and the Germany ai will never be able to take the UK and US.

Okay to be fair, the Soviets usually bluff on most of their 'Ultimatums' in historical mode, so them declaring war on you in 39 is very much out of the ordinary. Joining the allies in 1939 though was certainly a brave choice.

I am just about completely self taught, and almost half of my 900+ hours on a keyboard that didn't have a control key, so I was always annoyed when my enemies would support attack and I didn't know how, no matter what combination of buttons I smashed together. So I consigned myself to a playstyle where i commit to every action, which works most of the time, but I feel vindicated knowing that it wasn't entirely my fault for being unable to do it. Anyways it's always fun to see someone figure it out :D

It was funny, but unfortunately im pretty sure it was all over the moment that the allies ended up at war with the soviets. I think this game may have gone better had you not called in the allies against the soviets until later. Pretty sure the Soviets lost access to most all of their rubber after the war declaration, as they likely got most of it from Allied nations. Also the few additional skirmishes on land and sea between the allies and soviets, that im sure happened here and there, probably tipped the scales in the axis favor. Im also sure the soviet AI got hella confused when adding the allies as an enemy.

I recommend playing as the US, Britain, Canada, or Germany as those are the most beginner friendly countries. The Soviet and Italian focus trees might be a bit intimidating for beginners

Germany is definitely the most straight forward since you just get free land and your enemies are all weaker than you

Allies being at war with the soviets kinda fucks up game balance, I imagine secretly the soviets and allies were just all dying to each other in siberia or something. Like I don't know why, because I never really see them (allies and soviets) helping each other that much, but every game I've seen where somehow the allies and soviets end up at war it ends up with germany doing way better than it has any right to do so for ages.

You should try out the Old World Blues mod, it's a Fallout mod. It's a really good way ro learn HOI4 because it's way scaled down. Fewer factories, less man power, an easy to understand tech tree.

Really cool you're playing hoi4 again I really hope you do more! if you do I highly recommend, as awkward as it might be, to play nations like Germany, Italy and Japan as they give you a good idea of how the game works early on. Germany is strong and has a good amount of weapons, troops and resources, Italy gives you a war at game start which helps a lot when learning how to battle plan. Japan is over all just fun and easier to play with a straight forward historical goal so you can really feel like you're working towards something. Nations like Sweden and stuff are not a great idea to play first. At least I learnt a lot from playing those 3 nations. A lot are very overwhelming in comparison.
