And they wonder why there’s a shortage of HGV drivers, my son who is an HGV driver is often messed about, made to drive the maximum hours as a matter of course and treated abysmally at just about every RDC he goes to, and all for not a lot more than minimum wage. Now with all the empty shelves in the shops people will realise how valuable the truckers are to this country. All it requires is decent wage for a decent days work, and a bit of respect wouldn’t go amiss.

Same as being a carer. Working 12 ours on your feet, not enough staff, hungry, tired, thirsty, then find out there's no one to do the sleep over so you spend up to 30 hours in the same building, on no sleep, lifting people thst shouldn't be lifted, doing jobs you have yet to be trained for, caring for people with serious psychosis who regularly attack staff and ALL FOR MINIMUM WAGE.
@brynleytalbot7783 жыл бұрын
This started with the illusion that pay would be better for casual working emulating the technology sector where pay increased for short contracts. All it’s created is a race to the bottom regarding pay and conditions, with agency labour dominating, probably due to incompetent management within companies incapable of planning for labour shortages and incapable of motivating workers who shun them after productivity gains for short terms were incorporated into standard hours. All managers can do is to quote KPI’s. Strip away agencies or implement maximum margins they can operate under, and pay to the person working increases, along with the numbers wanting those positions. We’re paying middle managers excessively and their numbers are ridiculous. In my gym under full staffing (about twelve) half the staff are termed managers. Egos abound and in fighting results leading to a toxic environment. America promoted this insanity and we followed them.

You have to have everything tied up and watertight: I'm an estimator and when I price something I have to try and prevent this sort of mickey-taking. Build surcharges or penalties into your terms for being prevented from picking up at the agreed time - should be double the standard rate to cover your waiting time plus time for any potentially lost work, plus x% for fuel/parking/facilities/food, maybe 20%. It's the only way to ensure you don't get screwed.

Here's one for you. I rocked up to drop some kit off and retrieve some other stuff before packing it in for the night, leaving in the morning. The problem started when they couldn't find the paperwork for my stuff amongst all the other stuff they had going. I had to take it all and sort through it myself, giving them back their other paperwork. Then we found the palettes annnnnd..."Aw nobody here's qualified to drive the forks. Can you come back and load in the morning?" Then when that finally got done next morning I'm waiting to be let out (it was a secure compound), and had to go back in only to find a few of the guys kicking a fucking ball about. Straight to the boss' office. Shouting ensued when he caught them pissing about and after almost 15 minutes of waiting I finally got out and on the road again. No wonder I stopped and became a bus driver. :p

Feel your pain buddy, it’s the same for any of us that are self employed, own small businesses etc. Nowt more frustrating than people wasting time.., We added charges for such things to our t&c’s and when we get the customer to confirm the job via email it’s says they agree to our terms viewable on website or attached etc. It still doesn’t always mean you can charge them extra tho as often we have to look at the bigger picture ie is this a good or potentially good customer which is going to give us more work in the future? If so is it worth pissing them off or getting into a row

Every single day we have to show drivers the paperwork showing them what time we had them booked for, they are only ever told to be the for the pickup, nothing about a time slot it seems.

Can you not get agreement on a job and have default drafted contracts for signature. Contracts contain price to be paid once you have arrived to collect with a maximum waiting time or additional charges for waiting which cover the loss of an afternoon load. Also, a check sheet of questions to ask the person who booked the job, entry and exit requirements, who pack the load, who will be there if support is needed

If you price and quote your jobs accordingly with t&c's that cover waits etc, you'd not an issue.
@StewG19673 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I worked in the logistics industry for over 36 years and this kind of thing does happen every day if you are dealing with numerous customers, suppliers and/or 3rd parties despite planning everything to the last detail. There is a never ending list of reasons/excuses given to drivers… “we don’t recognise that reference”, “the warehouse manager is off sick today and he knows where it is”, “sorry the goods failed quality control”, “it’s not ready yet”, the forklift has packed up”, “we’re at breakfast/lunch”…I could go on and on. It is therefore the norm for quotes to state in the t&c’s or caveated somewhere in the email that waiting time or cancellation will result in additional costs being incurred and the breakdown of said costs.
@TheRockgod233 жыл бұрын

Charge em £45 per after after 1hr thats what me and my dad do. They always pay. Because me and my dad are drivers driving 26 tonners my mum is in the office dealing with all the office work. What she did and this was few years ago what she did was she wrote terms and conditions and created a customer form. So every time we work with someone new we send them the customer form which explains all the chargable times in case of delays etc. Also, maybe for quick payment use invoice financing. Many will say dont use it but hell to them they pay me 90% of the money pretty much immediately so I dont have to wait 30, 45 or even 60 days end of the month for my money to be in my bank account. Its trying to survive as a small operator mate you do what is best for you. Dont care about what others think.

I had a similar experience here in germany. I once had a job booked, "pick up a 27 tons steel-Coil in Duisburg at "Thyssen-Krupp steel" and deliver it to a place, about 100km away." The pick up date was Dec. 27th 11:00pm. I got there by 10:30pm (because Thyssen security is hell! They want to check every single detail like how im going to secure the load, when and why i have to enter the plant etc) and the guy in charge told me "Yh takes 45mins to get the coil" I said "Well thats cool, im going into my truck, having a break" After 30mins he was jumping and waving inside his office. I went to him and he handed me a piece of paper i looked at it "load shipped off, Sept. 23rd, Numberplate XXX" I looked at him "Seriously? you are telling me, you noticed NOW? 27tons missing since september and you still have the number in the system? ...... Well hand it over to me, to show it to your security guy" I left the plant empty, at 1:00am and the security guay at the gate was like "You have been inside for over 2 hours, and have nothing on your truck, what did you do?" I explained it to him and parked outside. Didnt have a job booked until 7 hours later.
