A few things may be the simple cause. 1. Not enough down pressure on the wire from the top wheel? Cure, give it half a turn more. 2. The wire is the wrong size for the grove in the wheel? Cure, check the wire and grove sizes match. 3. Too much tension on the wire spool so the wire feed motor is having to over work and the wheels may be slipping? Cure, slacken off the plastic not securing the wire spool to the spindle. 4. Torch connection to the machine loose? Cure, check the torch connection. 5. The metal coil liner in the torch lead is dirty from years of use or worn? Cure, change the liner. 6. The contact tip could be damaged? Cure, change the tip. Wrong size contact tip for the wire? Check and change the contact tip if required. 7. Printed Circuit Board fault? Get the PCB checked and replace or repair if required. 8. Dirty or rusty filler wire on the spool. Remove and clean or replace the reel as required.

I dont know much about wire feed welding. Is the issue that the wire is not feeding as smoothly as it should be?

Absolutely. The wire feeds so erratically that it's messing up the puddle. Gimme stick any day. I hate these little machines.
