Episode 1: Watergate - 00:00:00 Episode 2: Civil War - 00:16:17 Episode 3: Trancontinental Railroad - 00:30:51 Episode 4: Cold War - 00:44:25 Iconic American history has its standard versions, endlessly promoted by school books and popular culture. In HISTORY, NPR's Peter Sagal takes us on an irreverent romp behind the myths to reveal the fascinating truth of how money makes the world go around. - Watergate reveals that Nixon wanted money and power, and his personal greed lead to the infamous break-in. - What drove the Civil War was slavery, and in 1860 southern slaves were worth more than all the land and all the cash in America. - Those rugged individuals that movies taught us settled the West actually lived at the mercy of tycoons who ran the Transcontinental Railroad. - and the Cold War was history once Russian citizens learned that capitalism makes for a material world. If you want to understand history, you need to follow the money.

This video is a captivating deep dive into how money shapes history and human behavior. The storytelling is sharp and engaging, weaving through iconic moments like Nixon's downfall, the Watergate scandal, and even the Cold War. The "follow the money" theme brilliantly connects these events, revealing the hidden motives behind historical decisions. It's a fascinating reminder of how power and greed often drive history, leaving us to question the true cost of progress. Definitely worth a watch!
