Turkish shotguns are actually decent quality for the price usually, but I don't think it would be wise to spend a lot on a Turkish shotgun because it's known that different brands still use the same parts from the same factory as other shotguns to cut costs, although there are still a few good ones out there. However, Italian is the way to go if you're looking for an expensive shotgun imo.

I have a buddy who’s had one for 3-4 years. It was his first shotgun and one of the first in our group to get one. We have beat the absolute crap out of that thing and he’s hardly even had to clean it. Phenomenal gun. It’s so phenomenal that just today another buddy of mine was in the market for a shotgun and we went out looking for a 500 or an 88 and he came home with the exact folding stock model that I’ve been been shooting with my other buddy for years. Great gun.

I wanted to say that this video pushed me to get this as my first (purchased) gun. I saw this review, thought about it, did research because California laws are very stupid and after getting a stupid 'safety' card as well as waiting 10 days, I finally got it yesterday. A few hours playing with snap caps I bought during the waiting period and I can manipulate the gun like a competition shooter lol. Thank you Hickok, if it weren't for this video, I never would have known one of my dream guns (a mossberg cruiser) was so cheap that even I could afford it! I got a hogue grip and a fiberglass heat shield since I was so impatient during those 10 days, turned my maverick into a badass cruiser the moment I got home. Part of me is a bit upset at you though, I now have the urge to get an AR, a decent glock, maybe an sks.... dear god what have you done to me

I got an 88 for my 13th birthday, it has the big script Maverick by Mossberg on the side. I treated it like a dog, left it outside, kept it in a musty old barn, hardly cleaned it, but every dove or deer I ever killed was with that gun, and I still have it. Finish looks like black sandpaper and gets surface rust in a flash but it works just fine and hasn't failed, yet.

In my case before I learned about the Maverick 88 I never knew in the very beginning that the Maverick 88 is made by Mossberg. I was at Turner’s Outdoorsman in San Bernardino, CA and I saw a 20 inch barrel, 12 Gauge, 7+1 Maverick 88 for sale and it was used for $100.00. I took advantage of that and bought it. I love mine! No complaints, no regrets. It’s very similar to the 500. Just a few minor stuff that are not the same as the 500. Best $100.00 (plus tax) I ever spent on my first pump action shotgun.

I bought one in 2005 for personal protection while working in New Orleans after Katrina hit and was lucky to find it. I still have it and would have to say without a doubt it was the best $219 I've ever spent on a gun. I've never had the slightest hint of a problem. It doesn't pretend to be a 500 or 509 but its value as a house and yard gun can't be beat.

What's the recoil on it? Some say it's pretty bad since it's light.
@Slugg-O
@Slugg-O Жыл бұрын
@@TheTruth-sd8ey Recoil is stout. With high brass shells it can be brutal. I have no complaints but for the average home owner looking for a house gun for protection the whole family can shoot I would recommend this or something similar in 20 ga. The reason is because in a self defense situation the shot should be inside 21 feet where the pattern will still be tight enough to remain effective.
@TheTruth-sd8ey
@TheTruth-sd8ey Жыл бұрын
@@Slugg-O I've read this shotgun weighs only 6 lbs. Would such a low weight contribute to a high recoil? Or maybe a hollow polymer stock? How would you compare the recoil from Mossberg Maverick 88 to Mossberg 500, Remington 570 or Winchester SPX Defender? I am deciding between one of those, but my budget is low, since i just bought an AR, so Maverick caught my attention. If i had the money, i'd probably go with Remy, but it's morr than twice the price here.
@StevenKormane
@StevenKormane Жыл бұрын
@@TheTruth-sd8ey to be brief, all NON semi-auto (gas or inertia) recoil is directly proportional to weight (gross and balance). This is buffered by what recoil pad you use. Therefore: lighter; more recoil (see Newton). Buy a great RELIABLE firearm, the one you can afford. You can aftermarket the recoil later. It's all about mass (the science version, not Sunday Soul Sessions).

Even after trying a bunch of different brands of ammo, it would not feed reliably at all. So I took it back to the store, the guy that sold it to me, tested and verified that it was a lemon. Bought mine a few years ago from Academy Sports & Outdoors for a whooping $158.00 on sale. I used a Sears/J.C. Higgins (Wichester model 12 clone?) for years! This Maverick 88 seems very similar. Dual slide bars and pretty good action. The only difference that I can "really" tell is the 3 piece bolt assembly. Have put probably 1,000 rounds or more through it (target practice, dove and turkey huunting) and haven't had the first bad issue with it!! Would definitely recommend it!!

I bought my Maverick-88 with a 24" RIFLED barrel called the Slugster, shortly after getting my Mossberg 500 Combo. I love the Maverick with the 18" barrel from the 500 but will also swap out the 28" Skeet/Trap Ventilated Rib barrel when shooting in the high plains of Colorado. Both of the Mossbergs shoot like a dream and the action are smooth and FAST. Mainly the Maverick is for Home Defense with the 18" barrel and 00-Buck or #4 loaded, The 500 is in the Gun Rack above the Safe with the 24" barrel and SLUGS as a backup. Life is Good with a pair of Mossberg 12ga shotguns.

This was my first firearm for 189$ at big5 lol on Black Friday. I was 19 and just had a baby and got a new house. Since then I’ve bought, traded, sold, and learned about nearly 100 guns the one consistent gun that has never left my small arsenal is the maverick 88. Easy one of the best shotgun I bought. You should get one, especially for the price.

I've owned my Maverick 88 Security model (20" barrel, 7+1 cap) for several years. It's loaded next to my bed and is my go-to for home defense. Rock solid reliable. I've added a snap on fiber optic sight to replace the brass bead, a hand strap on the foregrip, and I carry extra rounds on the stock. I trust it to protect my family here in Tacoma, WA.

I think Hickok45 if anything, has done the masses a great service in bringing the lowly 5 or 7 round pump shotgun back into the spotlight and can really showcase that they have excellent range and versatility, especially with slugs. He has definitely shown that you don't need a 30-60 round semi with a drum mag to protect hearth and home and has hopefully inspired people to become skilled with a scattergun. It's funny how people think a pump gun is a beginners gun.....

I’ve taken quite a few turkeys with my Mav 88. A little secret: A Mav 88 with basic #4 shot will take a Turkey every bit as well as a Super Nova with super expensive, boutique, “turkey loads” that cost 4x as much as basic shotshells.

At close range you'll be able to, but not nearly as easily as with a dedicated Turkey load. Hornady 3" magnum BB coyote loads with the versatite wad and 1½oz nickel-plated lead shot is a game changer for Turkey aimed center mass. They're expensive but will extend your range a lot. Check them out.
