Watch that muzzle!
By the way, this old airsoft gun has been around for about 10 years, and it's been at least that long since we've had any "ammo" for it. If you think it fired a pellet when I snapped the trigger, sorry, you're just seeing things. I think a bug flew by, actually. :-) I don't think I've even see the magazine for it in years.

During my concealed carry class we were on a very simple range- all lined up toward our targets with a hill as a back-stop. The woman next to me on the line would muzzle me EVERY time she turned her Ruger LCR sideways to empty the cylinder. I have one, I understand why (the button is in an odd position and to get the right angle on the button, it is easier to turn it sideways so you can push it straight with your thumb). Both her and her husband reacted to me like I was a prick when I asked her politely to mind her barrel when reloading. And seriously, all I said was "Hey, could you please make sure your barrel is pointed downrange when you reload?" She said she was only doing it while reloading, so it was safe... I said "No, it is never safe to point a weapon, loaded or not towards someone else." Her husband started telling me to "mind my own business" blah, blah, blah. So, I expressed my concern to the instructor. And of course, she doesn't do it while he was watching. I stood back and let her finish shooting before returning to the line. Now the whole class is looking at me like I'm some kinda prick or range snob. I didn't care. My brains staying in my skull mattered more to me than people thinking I was a douche.

11:30 Exactly! I tripped at a gun range, I was walking out to view my paper target at an outdoor range, and my ear protection muff headband, being stuck up notably higher than the top of my head (I'm 6'4") got caught on the edge of the roof of the range building, and yanked my head backwards as I walked forwards. I cradled the pistol in front of my chest with both hands, and just accepted the fall, tucked my head forward to protect the back of my skull from hitting the pavement, and just let my back hit the concrete. I focused on keeping the gun pointed down range, and keeping my head safe from hard surfaces.

I love the shot at around 10:25, LOL. Camera pans down and you suddenly realize he's not standing on gravel and dirt, but a literal sea of brass! Love it! Now, joking aside, when my cousin and I were single digit age, our paternal grandfather was giving us some gun safety and target shooting lessons. When he felt we were ready, he let us shoot his little snub nose .22 revolver. He was also allowing us to cock the pistol after some time. My cousin, imitating something he "saw" (more likely thought he saw) in a James Bond film, proceeds to bring the pistol back towards his chest, point the barrel pretty much under his chin, cocked the revolver, then essentially reversed the procedure in dramatic fashion. I thought Pa was going to die right then and there. Needless to say, once the heart attack subsided, there were many more safety talks and lessons before shooting was again allowed. That scene is etched into my mind and I'm 45 now. I've never saw my grandfather looked more panicked than he did in that brief moment.

I'm not sure if you mentioned this, but if you see someone being an idiot and waving his gun around at the range or really anywhere, please don't shout or otherwise startle him, because when someone is startled, their muscles tense up, including the muscle on the trigger. Be calm and remind him that he's holding a weapon with the potential to kill someone and that he should always keep where the muzzle is pointing in mind.

Horse Puncher never be afraid to call for a cease fire. When you hear cease fire at a range every single person is to unload and place their gun on the table muzzle down range. Agree with you guys but the only time everyone will unload and put it on a table when they hear cease fire is at a range with professionals, not saying that is the wrong way to do it, but its wrong to expect it, i would bet one out of 20 would do that at any range in my town, the other 19 either haven't been taught to or simply wouldn't think thats what is being asked of them by "cease fire". I am not trained beyond my own common sense but the beginning of this video was making my alarms go off like crazy, yet if i heard cease fire i would instantly take my finger off trigger and keep it pointing right were it was (maybe a tiny bit lower) while i looked at the situation then bring it in after i understand whats going on.

When I was a 10 year old kid in the '60s, my dad was rangemaster at Ft. Jackson. He'd take me with him in summer and that's where I learned a lot about firearms. One thing I recall from training manuals I'd read while in the tower with him was that there is an invisible, indefinite plane perpendicular to the end of the muzzle, and that plane is the no-go point. Anything crossing that plane while handling the weapon is in danger of being shot. A bit extreme and perhaps overly cautious, but recoil -and surprise - affecting placement of the subsequent shot after the first accidental discharge with a semi or automatic weapon could be anywhere across that plane. A lesson I passed on to my kids.

The Loudest shot always comes from an "Unloaded" Gun, Nice to see a serious gun owner talking about safety
@Arto257
@Arto257 7 жыл бұрын
I look at "unloaded" guns like Schrodinger's Cat. Until that chamber is opened and I can see inside, then it's uncertain whether or not the gun is loaded. Only when the chamber is open, empty, and the clip/magazine is out of the weapon do I believe that it is unloaded. As soon as the chamber closes, the gun is uncertain again, and I have to assume for safety purposes that the gun is loaded. Helps keep me on my toes, for some reason. Probably one of the four things I learned in High School that I'll ever think about again.

I actually quite prefer the 'keep all guns loaded' school of thought to the 'keep all guns unloaded until ready to fire' school simply because people are stupid when they think the gun is unloaded. If the gun is always loaded, they're always *more* cautious than if it were 'unloaded' (even if it's still not cautious *enough,* its still more cautious and i find brings fewer accidents. My army buddies all agree with me aswell, misfires always happen when people _believe_ the gun is unloaded and get careless.)

This video is perfect! I wish I had known about it the last time I went to the shooting range. There was a mom with her son shooting handguns alone at a range with no range officer. My girlfriend and I brought our gear up from the parking lot and took the bench closest to them. Immediately upon sitting down, this woman had (hopefully) emptied the magazine and was inspecting her gun and flagged me multiple times. I told my girlfriend quietly that they were being irresponsible and that we should move to a different seat. About 30 minutes later this woman and her son were getting ready to leave and they were taking pictures of each other. I was appalled. This woman pointed the gun at her son, at her head, under her chin etc. I yelled at the two from across the range to keep their guns pointed downrange. This woman said, "ohh dont worry, its not loaded." i snapped back saying it really doesn't matter if she thinks its unloaded. In hindsight I should have tried explaining things and pointing them towards resources like this. later that same day, someone went downrange without properly calling a ceasefire. I noticed this and put my gun down immediately. Luckily he wasn't hurt. My girlfriend told me he called a wimpy ceasefire that nobody else heard except for her. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan of staffed ranges since they tend to adhere to strict safety rules. Thank god for hickok45 and his passion for making videos. Ill definitely share this next time I see someone with bad muzzle discipline.

@98chevys10ls sorry to burst your bubble, but it's impossible not to flag someone at some point and some scenarios it's impossible to avoid being flagged. For example, a lot of gun stores have EVERY pistol in the case, pointing right at the customer's. They take it out of the case and it literally HAS to be in their hand, pointed at a person. When you have a gun in a gun case and are walking around, it will always be flagging someone or something. Buying a gun from a gun shop and walking out the door flagging people is to be expected, as unfortunate as that is.

@JTheraos I'm not sure you understood the picture my comment tried to paint. The story Isn't about the reality that sometimes an unloaded muzzle gets pointed at you. The story was about a neglectful parent pointing a firearm at her son and herself. This is a very avoidable scenario that responsible gun owners never sees themselves in; especially on a shooting range with live ammo.

Croissant Please explain for all in the comment section. Just curious. But first. * Alcohol-Related Deaths: * An estimated 88,005 people (approximately 62,000 men and 26,000 women5) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. The first is tobacco, and the second is poor diet and physical inactivity. * (National institute on alcoholism and alcohol abuse) At least 15,292 people were fatally shot in The United States in 2019, excluding suicides, according to data gathered by Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks shootings. That’s a roughly 3 percent increase over 2018. Add approximately 25000 for suicides. You tell me alcohol equals life? Also I wonder how many gun related deaths are committed by people under the influence of alcohol.

I just think people need to consider the other major contributors that harm people As much or more than guns. Yet we still feed the idea of the joys of alcohol to kids through advertising the way they did with cigarettes years ago. Then we have the gaming that glorifies killing people. Some parents let their kids play the days away on the games and wonder why their kids are the way they are.

Ben Jamin I understand, I also can imagine the risk of experiencing an armed robbery in your lifetime is a lot bigger in the US than in The Netherlands. I gotta disagree with you that gaming has any influence on violence. Almost every one I know grew up with first-person shooters and these things never happen over here. Next to that the youth over here has pretty much 0 interest in guns, be it for sports or be it for collection, besides those in videogames. It’s a fact that you can easily buy an AK on the black market anywhere, but it would seem logical to me that the idea of guns being accepted and available has a greater influence on these incidents than the actual availability of firearms. There is a digital aspect which I believe to be of influence on these kids, and thats certain forums and online communities. There’s some really dark stuff on some forums which could easily make a young soul lose it’s sense for morale. People on those forums write manifests and articles to an extreme level beyond imagination. I’m afraid that there’s no simple solution to this problem in the US, as you stated you simply need it to be able to provide your family with safety at all times and in any case. Which is very understandable.

@@feebo4903 They are extremely uncommon here in Germany but it also depends what you call a real gun. In some areas Schützenfeste (would translate to shooting festivals. A tradition that originated from old Prussia with the intention to give the reservists regular practise) are a thing and therefore air rifles with small calibers are a thing there, but that takes place mostly in rural areas. If you are in the city you most likely see a gun for the first time if you meet a cop and then it's still holstered. To see MPs you have to visit Berlin because the guards in front of the embassies use them and ARs or bigger you simply don't want to see because that would mean there is some terrorist attack going on or the country gets invaded 😅 The first time I saw a real gun was when we made a school trip to a police school. Several years ago, I took a handgun lesson from an instructor who regularly taught at the indoor range in my town. He arranged to have my lesson after closing hours so we could move about in front of the shooting booths vs having to remain in the small booth. All went well and he gave me some tips that improved my shooting. At the end of the lesson however, he said he wanted to practice a bit on his own with movement and shooting. I stood behind him (up-range from the targets) while he did the most bizarre exercise I had ever seen. He pulled his arms to his chest, muzzle of his pistol pointed up--and right at his chin--and maneuvered about the range. When ready he would extend the pistol to a shooting position and fire, then return to his odd "ready" position. When he was done, I asked if it didn't make him nervous pointing a loaded gun at his head? His answer was that it was ok since his finger wasn't on the trigger and the gun wouldn't go off by itself. I believe he saw it as some kind of "tactical" move and shoot scenario, like maybe he would use to clear a house. I wondered, but didn't ask, what would happen if the imaginary bad guy made a surprise grab at his pistol when it was in that position. Even though I had enjoyed and benefitted from his lesson, I never took another. His behavior was just too out of line from the approach I have practiced during a lifetime of gun handling that started when I was 12 and continued through a career in the Army. Thanks for this video. I'm going to make sure my friends who are beginning to be interested in shooting view it!

I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps. A few years after I got out I took a job at a local shooting range and gun store. I was out of there in about 6 months. I felt more in danger there than my 8 years in the Marine Corps 🤣🤣🤣. You would NOT believe how stupid some people can be with a firearm in their hands. I recommend any gun owner attend some sort of class or training and then consistent follow up education. Firearms can be lots of fun to shoot but they are certainly not toys and should always be respected and handled with care.

Several months ago I went to see my friend who lives in the country and went out one day to shoot some guns. I grew up in a major city where gun laws are very strict, so I never had much exposure to gun safety. But I remembered this video. It helped a lot when I made a big mistake and kept my finger on the trigger of a revolver, firing it prematurely and hurting my hand. Luckily, it only suffered some minor burns but I remember this video about muzzle discipline which kept me from hurting myself or others. Never take this shit for granted.

wow, I don't like public ranges because of that :( me and my dad will just drive out into the middle of nowhere to shoot, we find some pretty interesting stuff out there, one time we smelled something really bad near where we were shooting and opted to get the heck out of there, since it was about to rain and my dad had to pick up my sister from the airport (we were on a schedule really) and before we left we found a rotting cow carcass near where we were shooting :O I think someone shot their cow around that spot, or it got killed by a pack of coyotes, since we didn't find any evidence of a herd of cows. pretty cool experience overall though, but there was also a lot of litter around there, sadly. TLDR; benefits of living in a desert in the middle of nowhere (in the U.S. in particular) plenty of places to shoot without people who don't know about muzzle discipline bothering you

Frankly as much as it's our right to own firearms, some people simply shouldn't handle them. If your attitude towards them is anything short of respecting a deadly weapon, it's just not for you. People forget ricochets too. You can point it in what seems a safe direction but a ricochet can hurt or kill someone. One day I was headed to the range which is a 45 minute drive away. On the way the I started feeling a little tired because I didn't get such good sleep the night before. Turned around and went home.

The solution is mandatory firearms safety training for _everyone._ That way everyone gets the safety training, and you don't have places charging thousands of dollars for the course to prevent common folk from being armed. This would be a hard sell in Britain because guns are relatively rare here, but in the US the chance of someone encountering a gun sometime during their lifetime is so high it's insane that it isn't a thing.
@English_Thespian
@English_Thespian 6 жыл бұрын
WJS Guns in Britain are already ridiculously expensive to maintain, with all the fees it costs to apply and reapply for your permit, and the insistence that you have a 'sufficiently safe' residence for the gun which basically means a very expensive safe. It really is a privilege of the rich.

+MusketWalrus I don't think I would call a few hundred pounds ridiculously expensive, people spend more than that on all manner of hobbies. The barrier to entry will exclude some poor people who could afford to own a gun in the US, but it's well within the reach of the middle class, not just the rich. Not that that really has anything to do with anything, because I wasn't talking about the shooting scene in Britain, I was talking about the US.

WEAPON SAFETY RULES!!! 1: Treat every weapon as if it was loaded. 2: Don't point at anything you do not intend to shoot. 3: Keep the weapon on safe until you are ready to fire. 4: keep the finger straight and off the trigger till you are ready to fire.

Thank you, Hickok45, for a really informative video. I was able to show this video to my wife, who is going to do her firearm safety course, and this video allowed her some insight and practical practice beforehand.

I started to cringe, and then realized that he's way too smart to point an actual firearm at an actual person. That and the weird muzzle tipped me off that it was an airsoft gun.

I'm a USMC combat vet (Iraq), and it drives me crazy seeing how so many civilians handle weapons at the range.... Obviously not all of them.. But, I guarantee most shooters think they aren't the careless idiots, careless idiots included. I was trained to point my weapon at the dirt by the way. I have friends who I won't shoot with. They make dangerous mistakes then laugh it off and they don't like being told anything that suggests that others know more than them. Insecurity and macho bravado are the marks of a fool. Like they were born as natural gun experts, too awesome to fail.

I'm an ex-Marine as well, but was never in combat (93-97). I have the same opinion about most shooters; even the ones that own tons of guns and shoot all the time are usually not very safe. I'm sure they think they are. I remember walking in a group and some of them were pointing their shotguns at the back of people's knees as we walked along. I said something too and got some weird looks. -I was thinking this guy in the video must have been a Marine because he was so safe, except that he used a couple of terms that are different than what I was taught. But I liked those terms he used...muzzle discipline and finger discipline. I agree, most shooters aren't safe and need to watch this video, or become Marines.

I'd be curious to see what you think about all the KZbin videos from these supposed trainers who teach you to reload and AR by tucking the stock under your arm, with the muzzle pointed at a 45 degree angle on the air, pretty much all the trainers are teaching this method of reloading since you can observe the mag well while inserting a magazine. I recently started adopting this method of reloading but then one of my friends on fb flamed me for pointing the muzzle in the air, saying the army trained him to always point it in the dirt when reloading. Yes, I had it pointed in a safe direction, even though it was on the air, the field on front of goes on for about two miles and of course I had my finger off the trigger when reloading since my sights weren't on target, I always have my finger off the trigger until I'm on target and ready to shoot. Is he correct or are all the popular trainers these days teaching an unsafe method?
