Am I the only person approaching retirement who doesn’t have $350,000+ to spend on a house? I’d like to find a place out of the sun, but without brutal winters, with good healthcare, low crime and a home I don’t have to gut to live in.

Many friends have encouraged me to retire abroad; in fact, I've gotten to know some of them better. I've always been a bit of a friend's guy, though, since I put in a lot of effort and think it pays off in a lot of ways. In this instance, it paid off with my retirement plan and F.A. since I've gotten letters from folks pleading for help; you know, I've kept my money a secret, not out of stinginess but sincerity.

Even though it hurts to admit it-I don't like to admit where my fortune comes from *Leah* *Foster* *Alderman* is well-known; she's the ideal advertising. Not everyone can do that. Its relative strength of two indicates that, over the past year, just 1% of the market has performed worse than this name-oops, sorry, only 1% of the market has outperformed this-which explains why it has plummeted so much. Not only that, but this investment has no dividend and is almost a micro cap at $400 million. The technical details are appalling.

Mesquite is slowly growing and still a cute smaller town. It's a good choice for affordability when compared with Utah. Utah is growing like crazy!! It's getting really expensive!! I'm from Utah, currently living in Vegas. I know I'll never move back to Utah. Mesquite is in NV so no state taxes. It's still close enough to Southern Utah and Arizona. You can easily go to see so many beautiful national parks in both states. There is beauty in the desert. 😊 And you're not far from Lake Powell or Lake Mead. Just my 2 cents as someone who has spent 39 years in Utah and Nevada collectively. 😉

@@moonshadow1104 Thx for info. I need to visit during summer. This conversation/video is making me think I''ll probably stay right where I am. Temp here is almost always 70 degrees +/- 5. I'm north of San Francisco on the coast. I leave 100+ temps inland at work, and come home to 70 degrees. The issue is that as I get older, l crave a bit of warmer temps. While it may be 70 here, the wind can be whipping and bitter cold, like down jacket weather to take the dog out. My area is not a great retirement area unless you've got a chunk of change. I was super lucky and bought a long time ago. Most everything 1 million + around here (thus the thinking of lower cost of living, pay cash for a house somewhere else for retirement).

This video only looks at cities, which is pretty normal. I am retired and moved over the past weekend to a little place in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas. I just don't like cities. The house I am renting is surrounded by trees, and I can only see one neighbor's house, a bit down the street. Otherwise, it's like blissful isolation. I've been watching this channel for years - this is possibly the *only* video where I didn't agree with a single entry on the list, other than maybe Burlington (which isn't really a *hidden* gem). Also, Pennsylvania is likely to have a better option than Pittsburgh. Surely, West Virginia, Montana, Maine, South Carolina, and Delaware would end up on this list. Of those states, SC might have to be bumped out considering there aren't a whole lot of *hidden* gems there anymore, and WV might be bumped out because a lot of the population is old due to economic issues and not because its desirable to retire to, though, PA is the same way.

I've lived in Louisville for a week now. If you move here stay away from the south west side of town. Pretty ghetto and if you are into shopping at trader Joe's, target, etc, expect to drive at least 25 minutes. It's a lot nicer when you actually get into the city. A lot of the streets/roads are built like your typical southern city. 2 lanes, and not enough of them that run north to south, or east to west. This results in traffic jams where there really shouldn't be any. Overall so far I like it, but everplace has its trade offs.

I do Maine in the summer, south Texas in all other seasons. Both are expensive. Do not be fooled by cheap homes, as in either case, lower priced homes are in rather uninspiring towns and neighborhoods. And, that's being polite. Be prepared to empty your wallet even if you have reasonable wealth. Retirement in the US takes serious bread, especially if you're dreaming of being a snowbird. In my opinion, you should now seek retirement where you can quickly access a full boat of medical care and not wait a year to see a doctor. Set this as a priority, establish your physician and specialist relationships and stay as healthy as possible. Anything less and the weather, golfing, beaches or cultural activities can become meaningless.

I prefer Lincoln to Omaha. Very good for retirees with the exception of public transportation which is abysmal. Rentals, while not exactly cheap, still are better than a lot of places in this country. And you like golf, well, there's about 50 courses to choose from in a 50/60 mile radius. Also easy to drive to some major cities. Omaha is 50 miles, KC is about 250, Denver, Chicago, St Louis, Minneapolis are all 500 miles or less with I-80 running thru it and I-29 just a few minute drive away. And I know that to people on the East Coast that seems like a long drive, Hell, I know people back here that take an overnight bag to go to an adjacent town just in case, but once you get west of the Mississippi 500 miles is an afternoon drive. The weather can be tempestuous with the cold in winter and the heat in summer.

I just moved from Alaska. They have substandard health care (and they know it). If you have a health crisis, you are flown to Seattle. Then your family has to go too to help you with transfer to a skilled care facility or flying back to Anchorage. If you look "sick," the airline will require a letter from the discharging hospital that you are safe to fly for 3.5 hours alone. Most people are NOT safe to fly right after a stroke, a heart attack, etc. DO NOT RETIRE TO ALASKA!!
@flamesniper126
@flamesniper126 3 күн бұрын
Totally agree here. If you are sick and can’t handle your condition, they will fly you to harbor view which is the only level 1 trauma hospital that caters to patients coming from Alaska. As far as I know, there is only one long term acute care in anchorage and 2 skilled nursing facilities

I’ve been here in Alaska 45 years and at least the local health care is much better than back in the 1980s. A coworker had a mild stroke back then and they told him he was drunk even though he on,y had two beers on the flight home from the slope. He flew to Seattle and they properly diagnosed him there. He was in his early 30s. I’m retired with a couple places here and my wife and I love it here. We spend much of our summers at our off road place. I trip down south for a few months every winter is nice now that we have the time. I’d never live in Anchorage.

This is true. I am retired here in AK and love it but I am on VA medical. Not career military but enough. They still have to fly you down to Harborview if you break yourself. Although I pretty much have access to whatever medical facilities are available to anyone here in AK. I have yet to have a major stroke, etc. Sure its coming. Just took a good 6 week road/camping trip down to my old stomping grounds in MT, ID, WA, OR. Was fun and not fun. It is no cheaper down there and in fact I found it more spendy all around than Mat-Su valley. Holy f*ck! I don't see how Canadians survive now in AB and BC. Your YMMV.

I predict that is going to change in coming years. As there are more frequent and more severe hurricanes in places like Florida, and homeowner's insurance continues to rise (if you can even get it from a major company), people are going to want to move to places that are away from natural disasters.
