Donna Pinaula and her kids have been homeless in Vancouver since 2012. They have stayed with family, in shelters and in a tent. In this video, The Columbian followed Donna and her kids through a typical day.

This is a great mom wow. A great mom would never see her kids homeless you would make sure they have a stable life. These children will have to deal with her mess the rest of their lives. Children should have happy loves they should not have to deal with the mess that their parents make. What kind of life is this for children a great mom wants the best for her children not what's best for her

+Patricia Scott Well let's hope you don't get a chronic debilitating illness that causes you to lose your job and your life to change forever. Or maybe let's hope that you learn a lesson not to judge others. You could be in a similar situation in the future. My life was great many years ago, I was a model, and lived a very active life style. I was always hiking, skateboarding, walking and working hard. Then one day I was walking in a parking lot and I collapsed. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with Lupus, and then Grave's disease. There were many months I couldn't even walk. I lost my job and had to move in with my Mom. I never thought an independent woman such as myself would end up like this. Now I live with chronic debilitating pain. Not everyone has a mother that is living or willing to take them in. I could have ended up homeless.

No thanks, the foster care system breeds children crazed by loss of parents at the same time they may be molested or mistreated by people who are getting money for their care.

I agree with you, Mary Shaffer. As long as the parent is loving, tries, and makes sure they do have shelter at night and food to eat they should stay with the parents. I worked in an inner-city school for 20 years. Kids want to stay with their loving parents no matter what! I've also seen kids come back from foster care messed up mentally and emotionally.

My children and I were homeless,we slept by abandoned apartment stairs,I had lost my disability,and the guy I was with didn't help out,he said since I had kids I should pay all the bills. I was told that so many times that I believed it. God helped us, it took awail ,I started working part-time it still wasn't enough to get my own place, I kept trying I prayed and moved out of state to a church shelter with youngest child. The shelter helped out with housing programs I'm very grateful. God bless.

I have been paying attention to the homeless situation in Vancouver for about 2 years now. What I have found: There are more homeless people living in cars, vans and campers, than living on the street. Most of these people have some kind of job, but not enough to afford a home. These are otherwise 'normal' people, and you would never know they are homeless. There is a stigma that homeless people are drug addicts, lazy, and criminals, but this is not true. The ones that get noticed are these type, because the others try to be as unobtrusive as they can.

I was homeless with my son off and on since the day I gave birth. Not because I am lazy. But because it's hard with no transportation, no family or friends to help. I couldn't get my son to daycare and I couldnt get to work. Some times I didn't have enough for rent after buying diapers, sippy cups/bottles, food, hygiene products, lights, water, garbage. I bounced from my own home to shelter about 5 times. Shelters charge about $10 a night here in Pensacola Florida. And when you have a baby on your hip, that's alot of money. I help cardboard signs on the side of the road with him, lived in tents, lived in a car, etc. Alot of people judge saying they have been in our shoes. Well honestly, no you haven't. If you were in our shoes, you wouldn't judge us. Homelessness is real. And not all choose to be homeless.

Making the best of a very bad situation reveals a kind of strength that most of us do not have. Taking care of your children in this kind of scenario is inspiring, just to make sure they are fed and clothed and loved each day is extraordinary. To not give up, to keep the faith and to hope that tomorrow will be a better day for them is what most homeless people need for a role model in a depressing situation. They need a tiny home!!!

I have been homeless several times often struggling to keep a positive mentality in the face of my child. I appreciated every head up I received and every open heart who embraced me and my baby. I had a few select who pretended to help until after the food stamps were gone or a boyfriend came around, I tired of that kind of heartache and found myself on the streets some nights not sleeping to watch over my child as she slept. I had money every other day from selling my plasma to get a room other days until space opened at the city salvation army. It's not easy to be on your ass hoping you do the right things in the eyes of your child in such a demeaning low in life, I had employment here and there when the hours allowed me to work around my daughter school scheduling. I didn't feel like a good mother but now that my daughter older and we have stability she reminds me that I'm awesome and she is happy to have me as her mother and she tells me she is thankful I never gave up. I want people to consider the poor ,we are not all lazy crackhead druggies. My first experience of homelessness was being afraid to have my girls around the men who molested me as a girl who were part of my grandma life so I felt I was keeping my oldest two safe when I chose a shelter versus the worry I felt carrying my first daughter. The irony is the system at some point called me crazy, uneducated and placed my children with thoes very people. I have a 13 year old and all thoes experiences all but killed me. I walked away from my other children in defeat feeling bullied but after hitting the floor thinking I'd die God gave me a reason to hold my head up and know he is God. I don't mean to give feom your pocket or offer your home but don't be quick to judge next time you see or meet someone down on their luck try being a friend or voice of reason. Our walks in lessons of faith are different ,you never know who will be the one you save with just encouraging words or a honest smile.

i've never been homeless but my mom raised 3 kids on one low income salary and child support. she tried her best to keep us off of the streets and in school. it was hard because she wasn't around much to be a mom due to her work schedule but i knew she also drank and did drugs on the side. she would get food and clothes from local pantries and churches because bills and her habits took up most of the money. people at school would bully me for getting free lunch and not having nice clothes. i felt ashamed and angry at my mom for embarrassing me. my sister stole clothes and food to look like she wasn't poor in school. she ran away and turned to drugs to get my mom's attention. my brother became violent and hard to control so he was sent to live with my dad, who also had addictions. my family is doing better now that we have grown up, minus my father who passed of a heart attack. our struggles aren't over but we keep fighting to be decent people who work for what little we have.

In order to get yourself out of this situation you need to have a plan on how to improve yourself and put yourself in a position where you can take advantage of any opportunity that comes along or create on for yourself. Having faith is still important as well because these changes may not come as soon as we might hope.

@VideoCesar077 жыл бұрын
Not talking about religious faith, just about faith that your efforts may eventually be rewarded with a chance to improve your situation. I'm not naive, I know that this may take a long time, or it may happen sooner than expected, or unfortunately, it might never even happen at all. Losing all hope and letting yourself sink into despair is what can keep your from seeing an opportunity or keep your from trying at all. I live in an area where there are plenty of homeless people. Some of them have been in that situation for years yet have an amazing outlook, yet other have just completely given up.

This broke my heart. She's a strong lady with strong kids. My little boy is 6 & 3 years ago after living with my mom & friend I was finally able to buy my son & I a home. It's a 14x 40 ft used mobile home with 2 tiny bedrooms a small bath & combined living room & kitchen. I love it so much! We even have a washer & dryer. I cried my heart out the first time I brought my little boy here & showed him his very own bedroom. I pray & hope so much this lady finds a home for her children & herself. Especially for her little kids.

A couple of times i was in shelter for women with my 3yr old daughter but everytime i got there I promise myself my baby won't grow up knowing that life. So the second time i went there I decided that i will never come back and I never did. Now my daughter is 18 yrs old, she is at University and working. We got our own home and travelling to places i have never imagine... hold on tight you'll get through it. Life is like a wheel sometimes your up sometimes your down. Just go with it and never lose hope ...

The way that mother speaks, brings me back very painful childhood memories....shes either drunk or stoned...and yes, I am going 2 b hard here.....Why is she smoking ? Smoking is a VERY expensive addiction...and its NOT a necessity, so even if she didn't buy them, why would anyone beg for a cigarette....when they have kids to feed? Isnt it better to beg for a sandwich for one of ur kids , than a freaking cigarette ?

you know i used to feel like you. i grew up poor and we had no food. my mother smoked and i really held it against her. but now i think , she knew our life sucked, and maybe that helped her cope. i am not a smoker so i dont know, but she said it helped her when she was stressed. i see a lot of people do that. stress, and oh where are my cigarettes? so i forgive her for that now, but it took along time.

Some people don't have families. Or if they do they can't turn to them, I believe this is the case for 99% of homeless people. These are the people that end up homeless, everyone else when they hit a life crisis, a divorce, losing their job or house, goes back to their families to get on their feet again. When you have no family to go live with, where do you go if you do not have money behind you? On the streets.

the lady in this video said 3 of her 5 kids are living at her father's (the kids' grandfather) apartment. I immediately wondered why the grandfather would allow 3 of his grandkids to stay with him but not the other 2 kids and their mom. It's possible the apartments he lives in are strict about how many people he can have staying in his apartment, as many apartments are, but what a difficult situation.

Some people rather be homeless then live with a free loading relative, you move in then all of sudden they want you to pay for everything, while they save their money, half is ok. One reason to stay away from family.
@crackerpantsbingo63904 жыл бұрын
Free loading relative? Are you kidding? This woman can barely take care of herself and kids much less give money to someone else to house her! She needs to stop having any more children!!

I was homeless single mom with my son when we first moved to a city in Alberta we were homeless for long enough lots of good and bad things happened. My son and I stayed in different churches every night. This documentary reminds me of difficult time in my life, but I'm happy to tell you people I'm no longer homeless and living in apartment. I met a guy who's also single dad. Its hard to get out of the tough spot being homeless. I know people who liked being homeless its easy to get trap in it. What I mean by this ..its easy to get used to certain way of life, no rent over your shoulder free food clothes. In a way its a easy way of life. I think many choose it bc they like and are used to to. One must overcome that want something beyond that. A normal life its possible with lots of hard work. Fast forward my son is old grown up now on his own for 2 years now working towards a career. I was single mom son was a bit older then her son was.

it took me 20 years and then 26 consecutive attempts to quit but finally did. its a really bad addiction that completely enslaves a person. nobody just quits smoking. one thing about addictions is that they are a crutch.. if she was doing good she would probably quit a lot sooner. but its do well first. when doing bad addictions strength is increased.

because Bible. Be fruitful and multiply. You trust God will take care of you. Which is why Christians don't ever go to doctors. They pray away disease and homosexuality. And if their child dies of hunger or cancer or AIDS or whatever, must be divine purpose.

you are referring to very small extreme religious groups who dont believe in drs & medicine. most christians do & they also believe god helps those that help themselves, hard work & good decision making. they make wonderful friends, neighbors & co workers. they also practice birth control in the form of abstinence, the pill & condoms. people who choose to have children they cant afford are just the ignorant & uneducated. btw, most unwed teens did not & do not attend a church.

Smoking is an addiction, if she doesn't waste money on them she probably asks other people on the street for them. And they make it really easy to get phones these days. You can make small payments every month for years. And not everyone can get government housing
