Hi hon, I am so excited for every find you make in your cottage. I know that when we did our old farm house we were most excited about the miracles hidden by 2oth century crap lol. Word of advice ( you don't need to take it) dont do anything about repointing yet.. wait...your funds will go quite fast so let the builders do their thing and then decide. The one thing we made a priority was to aways clear the debris before we finished for the day, nothing worse than coming back to a crap storm of building rubble. Hope you are feeling better. Ciao until next week

That's such great advice thank you! And omg I know it's definitely important to clean up because there's nothing worse than going back down to a dirty room to start with!

@rossmorrow30134 күн бұрын
Each to their own, but I wouldn’t be even thinking of buying tools to do any repointing, it’s using up valuable time you can’t afford not preparing your site for your builders. For a single handed project you are really doing amazingly well, don’t get discouraged or distracted, by hopping from wall clearing to pointing which will potentially need to be removed anyway by your builders, and you mention that you are always against a deadline for your grant. You’re doing a great job!1
@morrigans_cottage3 күн бұрын
Thank you! So all the prep for the builders is kind of optional, but they would like the walls pointed prior to them coming - as much as possible anyway so they can crack on with the other stuff and have the stone walls stable, but we'll see how it goes its more than likely they'll have to do the repointing

If it’s not anywhere on the property you might look in salvage yards. They often have great stuff from the past. Get acquainted with your local antiques dealers too. And car boot sales. You never know where you’ll find treasures for your house and garden. If this is a bedroom I would keep the fire surround fairly small with a nice mantelpiece for a few items such as candlesticks and perhaps a clock.

Bare stone walls in cottages are only cold if they are damp. And as you've said, it's concrete that causes the damp (both on the walls, floor and around the outside of the building). Your walls are lovely - go ahead and repoint with lime and you'll have a beautiful wall to look at! Well done for uncovering this hidden beauty.
@morrigans_cottage3 күн бұрын
Oh that's good to know! I thought maybe because it's an external wall that it would be colder but great to know it's only cold if damp!
@WriterGeek3 күн бұрын
@@morrigans_cottage well you will need a wood burner etc. to heat up the walls, but stone holds heat for a long time (and very cool in summer too)! I also believe there is a way of doing lime rendering for the bad walls that is insulating (while allowing your house to breathe).
@morrigans_cottage3 күн бұрын

Office desk etc opposite the wall with fire place and put a sofa bed in the middle of the room facing fireplace. Maybe add coffee table, bookshelves etc. Better use of space maybe. Sorry I am late to the grand reveal 2 inches of snow and we lose the electric, WORSE 23 hours after it came back on NO Internet for 3 days, can you believe that I was so mad. Anyway yes on the fireplace cant believe it, I think if the walls will hold then go for it, you can do it in your own time and imagine how it will look, you seen the girls walls and camper vibe so it can be done and and use lime plaster. Also I did say before about turning that doorway into a nook, so now you could have it all blocked up and flat that way you have a wall to put your bed that will be able to centre your bed, and a nice wall to look at, then the living room can have that space as a nook or shelves in it. Either way you will find it as you go, I know you must be better now and so hope to see whats happening next. Big hugs to all as always Dede xxxx

You could get the concrete out and put an electric or gas fireplace insert. You could also close off one of the doors to rework the floor plan. I don't think I could bring myself to put anything in front of it, especially after re-pointing. That will be gorgeous. Now, not to be a buzz kill, but It might need to be evaluated by an engineer with those cracks, though; the cement might be holding it up.

I have a guess about the wooden bits next to the fireplace: if previous owners in the dim past wanted to "fancy up" the place a bit, they might have added a wooden mantle and surround on the sides of the fireplace. To do that, they'd have to make a way to fasten it into place and one way to do that was to add some wood to the sides to give something to nail into. As I said, just a guess but I do have a certain knowledge of old homes and antiques so my guess is semi-informed. By the way, maybe don't worry so much about centering the bed in the room. Wait and see what happens organically. One of the charms of old cottages is that nothing is ever quite even and perfect, and it shouldn't be.
@morrigans_cottage4 күн бұрын
Oh that makes total sense what the wooden pieces were for! I definitely think that's the most logical explanation anyway! And you're right, I'll definitely wait and see what the room tells me, most of the charm is that nothing is straighy or centre!
@PJ-polly4 күн бұрын
Hi the pieces of wood are fixings most likely to attach fireplace or wood panelling
@morrigans_cottage4 күн бұрын
Ah ok that makes total sense! It'll have to come out coz it's so rotten but I wasn't sure what it might be!

This room working on, would make a good front room. As you can see the cars go by. With the fireplace make it cozy. Notice they didn't insulate the walls. One room at a time. It will all work out for you. Do you do it all yourself or help?
@morrigans_cottage3 күн бұрын
It's all by myself until Jan when the builders will come in and do their stuff! But then it'll be back to myself again!

the elusive fireplace shows up. How exciting! Sorry you are feeling ill. You have been a busy girl, though. The plaster seemed like it came of easier on that wall. Was it damp? Now all you have to find is that bag of cash they hid in the walls . Wouldn't that be awesome?😊 feel better soon ❤
@morrigans_cottage3 күн бұрын
The plaster was damp which really made it a lot easier to take off! Or maybe I'm just better at doing it now, either way it was much easier than normal! Yes I'm very ready to find the bag of cash! ❤️

Have you thought about asking any of the locals if they know the history of the cottage? Youd be surprised that some neighbours may even have old photographs. Also might be worth getting the stone sandblasted before pointing.

the airoboard and plasterboard were a 1980's way of dry lining houses, you'll be using high density insulated paster boards now. Ide buy the 50mm insulated ones. i wouldn't bother with the fireplace. opening it could end up costing you a lot. Get a stove instead
