1) if you have multiple apps the auto alignments doesn't work according to the left/right window size, it just centers and you have to re align first app to the screen again each time. Browser 65% and all apps 35% is my usual go to. In windows this just works. win+left automatically adjusts according to remaining space on the screen unlike mac and it was a solved problem tbh. unnecessary re-inventing doesn't always work. 2) Also the win+l for windows lock is so much easier to remember and use while standing near the desk than ctr+com+q

0:33 fun fact: it took Apple so long to implement window tiling because Microsoft patented the concept of a "Method for providing window snap control for a split screen computer program GUI", and that patent only expired this year. Apps like Rectangle were able to provide it because functionality from external software to an operating system wasn't bound to the patent (also why Linux desktops could get away with it, since their desktop managers work as non-OS specific external software).

@ Sad but true, bro. I’ve been on macOS since 2013 (OS X Mavericks) and more than 10x macOS iterations later I am still genuinely excited using it and keep finding more and more cool stuff, thanks to Snazzy Labs, Gary at macmostvideo, MacVince and many other macOS users who happen to love it and share awesome content with all of us. Good luck finding such content for Windows. Is it a surprise for me? Not at all. With each version of Windows Microsoft is going from one direction to the next, changing lots of fundamentals while at it and instead of getting polished - it always feels unfinished or even semi-broken. Thats just the reality. I manage lots of various Windows machines of all sorts of versions (today it is mainly Win 10 / Win 11 of 21-24H1-2 varieties). All of them behave slightly different in different areas and I’ve yet to see a user really taking advantage of it’s functionality. Fundamental stuff such as Mail app and unicode support is broken in various scenarios. macOS is not perfect, but throughout the years I found only one, albeit core functionality bug thats just ignored and not fixed. In Finder “Right Size All Columns Individually” option in column view basically does not work:) Overall, going for late 2013 MBP 15 (maxed out and without Nvidia GPU) was the best tech decisions I’ve made for sure. macOS is awesome.

4:55 I'd strongly recommend using full path to the specific option you create shortcut for. Some applications (like for example VSCode) have options with same name and in that cases MacOS triggers them instead of system ones. One tricky thing with that is how to specify full path (at least for me it was tricky). Basically, you need to use '->' in between menu/submenu names (i.e. Menu->Sub Menu->Item), just be careful, you can't add spaces between '->' and menu/item name or the whole path will be incorrect. In case of shortcut from the video, you should pass 'Window->Move & Resize->Top Left'. Hope someone finds it helpful as I spent a good hour looking for solution on how to set it up a few weeks ago 😉

About opening the context menu from the keyboard: Control + Enter works e.g. in Finder only if a file is selected. But you don't get the context menu if no file is selected. This can be done using fn + VolUp (which sends F12 in reality). This works in all applications, also in the KZbin comment editor where Control + Enter would publish the comment. F12 must be activated in Accessibility => Pointer Control => Alternate pointer actions and there you can assign a button for the right click.

For snapping, I think the default mapping is worth keeping. It's just the two left-most keys and then shift added in for more complex actions. Better to keep it as is and then be able to quickly use any Mac instead of having the overhead of a custom setup that also may break in the future if Apple changes hotkey requirements.

5:31 The reason Finder & Safari windows behave differently when double-clicking their titles is that Zoom on the Mac means "fit to contents." Web pages are documents of effectively infinite length, so Safari fills the vertical space. But switch ti Icon view in Finder and add some icons, and the window should expand to fit all of them. Like the Stationary Pad tip I have a while back, this comes from the Classic days when screens were smaller & maximizing a windowed UI was inefficient for drag & drop.
@JL-wr1dv3 ай бұрын
These are really useful, thank you!
@AnonymousFreakYT3 ай бұрын
5:45 - It's not that a Finder window "gets shrinky and small", it's that it enlarges _or_ shrinks to fit the content. If you have an empty window, it will shrink, if you have a window full of documents, it will enlarge. If it's an auto-sort view, it will only grow vertically, filling the full screen height like it does in other apps if there are too many icons. But if you're in a folder that isn't auto-sorted, it will grow or shrink both horizontally and vertically (as appropriate for each) to fit all the icons.
