Exploring behind the scenes at Leeds City Station & the old Wellington Station, uncovering all of it's history and Hidden Secrets. We visit many areas that the public don't get to see, such as the River Aire tunnels as they pass underneath the station and an old ancient river called the King's Mill Goit that is still visible.

British Transport Films made a series of ‘Report on Modernisation’ films. The first two were made in 1959 and 1961. In one of these, I think it was the first, a model of the proposed Leeds station development was shown. When I was last there a couple of years ago I walked through the North Concourse and just before reaching the exit at the far end on the right side is a tile mosaic seen set into the floor, ‘News Theatre’. I remember the ones at Victoria and Waterloo Stations in London, but I didn’t know that Leeds also had one. The only other one I know of was at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. When the North Concourse at Leeds was being cleared out in preparation for restoration and re-opening something against one of the walls had been removed, revealing the remains of a poster for the 1966 Southport Flower Show.

Darren, I will never think of an expanded city station in quite the same way again, as might even be on top of you! Your knowledge of all these old thoroughfares, waterways and bridges is impressive indeed and fascinating too - especially for those that imagine that things have always been as they see them in the present! There are persistent rumours about Edinburgh Waverley, following the success of the Glasgow Central tours, saw paws crossed, eh? You might even get to guide the guides...

Under the city centre as a whole in fact. Even more, how many times has this been done in how many towns and cities across the country, the planet in fact? I'm really impressed by the tanking/waterproofing successfully completed back in the mists of the distant past. It had to be perfect because of the enormous amount of pressure exerted on the walls of and by the former goit. Those arches from (13:11) are absolute beauties and it's a total travesty that they're only visible to a few parked cars.

I'm astonished just how deep it goes underneath the station and the wider river/gout complex. There's just so much room! It's honestly such a shame they can't think of a way to reuse the space for other than car parking. My personal dream is for Leeds to have an underground metro, wouldn't it be wonderful if all this space was put to use for it!

I lived in Leeds around 1995. Was any of what you showed in this film, part of Granary Wharf (not sure if Granary Wharf still exists)?
