Hidden Winch Install - Ford Super Duty

Overview of the install of the Rough Country Hidden Winch for 2020, 2021
and 2022 Ford Super Duty Trucks (F250, F350).
I installed this on my 7.3 L Gas Super Duty Tremor that did not come with the factory Warn Winch.
Install was easy but time consuming and the instructions were vague so the progress was too slow to film.

I mounted mine a week ago and experienced the same challenges with the vague instructions. I also spent a bit of time figuring out the winch box. The other challenge was the power and ground wires were not long enough.

Do you have 1 or 2 batteries in your truck?

@@EdSpringer I only have 1 so I'll be running the engine when I winch. Same with my air compressor.

When finally mounted, is the bracket touching the bottom of the radiator brace

@@EdSpringer Not that I recall but it was close to the transmission cooler that sits in front of the radiator. Still did not interfere with that either though.

I just install this warn ford winch on my 2017 ford f 250. just had to relocate the transmission cooler fits prefect got it from Sawgrass ford .

reroute those wires up into a safe location. cover them for there protection.

Yes I did. To my friend who actually bought this truck after I told him it was for sale. I removed the winch before trading it in to the dealer then my friend bought it!

I called Rough county today asking about having to trim the upper part of the mount plate next to the radiator. They told me that it’s not a fit for the 6.7 diesel. I did read that some guys have to trim a 1/4 inch off the top. I really want this set up but want to make sure it will work.

I mounted this on my 22 6.7. I did have to trim 1/2” or so, but it wasn’t bad.

@@7n4163 not really. I have a pic of the winch fully mounted with the bumper still off and a pic of the plate mounted from underneath, but no picture of the actually plate after it was cut.

This may be a dumb question, but if the winch was mounted upside down, doesn’t that mean in and out will be reversed? Is it as simple as spoiling the rope the opposite direction?

I think it doesn't matter. It would just mean that the line would either lay on the top of the spool, or the bottom.

@@JeffStokerya, you’re right. That’s why I prefaced it with dumb question. 😂 I like to over complicate things in my head! One more question. In the instructions, cutting a bumper bracket was one of them “to allow room for wires”. I have the entire set up mocked up on jack stands, watched tons of videos and gone over how I’m going to do the install in my head a bunch and I can’t figure out what would need to be cut. None of the wires appear to be in the way.

@@phillipblock5244 Hey you know what? I was trying to wrap my head around the same issue and bought a new angle grinder and everything. Come to find out that on my bumper, that same bracket was not there and I didn't need to cut anything!

I’ve wanting to install the hidden winch myself on my 2017 6.7 Turbo Diesel and have been doing a lot of research and reading through many forums but haven’t seen anyone talk about a 17-19 and still wondering why no one has addressed the hidden winch on a 2017 to 2019. The demand is there.

I have 19 platinum and want to do the same...i don't see why it wouldn't work..headlights and such are a little different but i think that underneath the facia..everything should be the same from 2017-2023...right??

the 17-19 have the transmission cooler in he way, the 20-22 have been relocated.

@@carlosandrade7439 can you buy a relocation kit to move the transmission cooler where the 2020-2022 have them? I wanna buy the rough country winch kit. Been doing research and heard you can trim the edges on the winch mount to make it fit in? My truck is currently in the shop. I’ll keep you guys updated to see how we make it work out. God bless

I wonder if the diesels are different, I am trying to install this on my 21 F250 tremor 6.7 diesel, i can't get the plate to mount up without the rear radiator getting in the way, it looks like it sits below your radiator just fine. mine has two radiators and the plate wants to sit exactly were the rear one sits, does the 7.3 only have one radiator?

I just posted a 'short' on my channel showing the mounting plate a little better. I only have one radiator that I can see. There is an oil or transmission cooler radiator but it is mounted up a foot or so higher and not in the way at all.

@@JeffStoker thanks man, you just verified what I thought, the diesels have what appears to be a different setup. I have two radiators,the rear is the main radiator, the forward one is the accesories radiator not sure, but they definitely appear to be lower that the gas engines as I cannot get the winch plate mount bolts into the bolt holes into the frame holes when I try and mount it up as an assembly of the winch plate and the winch plate mounts to the frame, it hits the rear radiator.

Is your truck gas or diesel? RC says this won’t work on a diesel…which makes nonsense at all

It works on diesels, you’ll just have to trim a little bit of the plate the winch mounts to.

never use a open hook on a winch cable. use D-rings. and the factory hooks are junk to start with.

That was the part I dreaded the most. Bought a new grinder and everything. Then after I took the bumper off, this bumper did not have that part in the way. I didn't even need the grinder!

I found that I could download and Print them from their site and could actually see the images on my home printed version. Just a tip if you haven't started yet.

winches are not made to be quiet.

Definitely louder than the Stock Warn winch in my F350 Tremor.

trash the factory wires . cheep chinese. buy welding cable and heater hose to protect the welding cable. mount the control but up high. as to be safe you should open the hood anyhow. use better metal trailer socket/plug. far longer wire ( like 20 feet long) so you can stand out of the way. i do not believe in the wireless remote control as any and all electronics must accept interference. FCC law. but have a wire rope shop install a proper and safe loop on the end of your wire rope. buy ONLY rated D -rings and components. have more than you think you need. have two extra lengths of cable a good 25 ft and 50 ft.
