Here in Norway they have a similar product called a fjellduk (mountain cover) by a company called Jerven(wolverine) which has been used by hunters and the Norwegian services for +-30 years....amazing piece of kit, versatile and very hard wearing with a 10 yr guarantee 😳. Love the channel keep up the good work 😎

I use a very similar method to your secret Velcro one. If ever I hit my thumb with a rock inserting pegs I invariably end up squealing like a pig, causing the surrounding wild life to think "Phew, it's just a pig putting up a tarp" Cheers Nick.

I use an Army surplus blanket as a capote wrap as in the N American style so it acts as a coat Add a poncho to that and you are waterproof, either as a poncho, wrap, or tarp For $40... And it works very well
@Revup13 жыл бұрын
It would be interesting to compare this to a jerven, they are both in the same price bracket (depending on which Jerven version) and I suspect the Jerven is a more adaptable concept (removable liner etc). I toyed with the idea of a Jerven, but thought I wouldn't get the use for the price, so I bought a swagman roll and poncho instead....brilliant bit of kit. I've used the swagman as a lightweight sleeping bag, a sleeping bag inner, a blanket, as a bivi liner, as a poncho liner (thought its a bit too warm it in UK). Now that I've got the swagman I really don't see the need for these more expensive concepts.
@Revup13 жыл бұрын
@@hiddenvalleybushcraft5683 In the stuff sack it packs down to same size as the jungle sleeping bag (smaller than the lightweight) but with a little extra effort it packs into its own pocket even smaller. Weighs 745g. It is water resistent but won't stand up to a downpour, so you need to pack a poncho too. As a sleeping bag I've found it about as warm as the lightweight bag on its own, if a little more 'snug', which I quite like!

Very nice piece of kit! It seems to be inspired by the Jerven Fjellduken, which is incredibly useful in the colder months. I really like the dual sides of your tarp. As always, a good honest review of equipment..
@poncso112 жыл бұрын
As several other comments already suggest, this product is very similar to the norwegian Jervenduk. What is interesting about this, is that members of the norwegian military use this piece of equipment to make a shelter that we like to call a cocoon. To do this you just suspend the two corners to two trees or a ridgeline so that its barely above the ground or slightly touching. When you lay a sleeping pad inside and lay down in it its essentially a suspended tube ( still on the ground), but because of the zippers you can protect yourself from all sides, its waterproof and insolated and becomes a shelter and sleeping system in one, and takes little time to put up. «top tip» if you suspend it with the zippers up its easier to climb in but during heavy rain its recommended to have the zipper facing down and crawl in from the sides. I bet you could put this model up in a similar matter. I dont know if this model you have is as warm as the jervenduk but we rangers in the norwegian army can sleep in cocoons during the winter without sleeping bags. Would love to see you test out that model in this fashion. Love the channel and keep up the good work.

@@robertsadler9079 yes as a sleeping bag it is quite tight at the shoulders but I only ever use it in the summer and having the top quarter unzipped but held in place by an elastic toggle that is there can help overcome this. I've noticed they've gone up in price recently, I don't think I'd have paid the asking price now. They do a cheaper swagman "basic" the difference I think is only the outer fabric material is different and pockets are missing. I love my swagman but it is a bit of a jack of all trades master of none, very versatile but sometimes a bag is better, I can recommend the snugpak jungle bag for a lightweight summer bag they do a jungle blanket too.

This seems to be potentially the soldier new recce blanket? Do you remember the old US Army poncho liner British soldier used to crow about, the quilted blanket in the old US woodland camo pattern that rolled up small but gave you a good insulation even when wet/damp? This reminds me of that but with the little extras like zipping yourself into it, arm holes etc. Maybe the white/camo would not be best suited to temperate ops, perhaps camo/khaki? If I was wet, cold and potentially sitting in the back of a troop carrying vehicle (TCV) for a while this would be an absolute dream.

I severed in Recon/LRS in the Army and grew up hunting. Being able to sit static for long periods of time we’re not easy in the winter for us. Because of weight, we were forced to just wrap up in our poncho liners that were designed and rated for tropical or hot weather zones. About 15 years ago I received the Felljegen camo hid system. Which is similar to this. Although, it uses a reflective inside that really keeps you warm. And it comes with sleeves to help keep your lower arms warm and camo on the outside of the system. The camo is also much better. This really seems like a swagman roll from Helicon system. It’s not bad. But sadly over priced. I’m sure the Mountain warfare people behind this could have come up with something just as good for cheaper. My Kifaru poncho liner is cheaper and can do the same???

Anything that breaks the rule of cam regarding shape needs addressing, but being a prototype I guess that is well in hand. Nice idea, maybe adding loose sleeves and a hood/mantle (similar to those worn by monks or people in mediaeval times) would enhance it. My Jerven bag in conjunction with ponchos and snow poncho worked well, both very lightweight. Jerven is heavier though. Jerven means Wolverine, an animal supreme in any weather.

Interesting special forces skirt or kilt we wear pants hunting in the States. As a shelter with both ends open it wouldn’t be that warm. Warmer and not carrying a second bag . Have fun and stay safe.

the US army originally trialed this concept back in the 1980s, think it was even on limited issue for awhile but was to expensive and dropped. The Germans and Austrians played with the idea of sleeping bags with arms or arm holes that could be worn (no tarp feature thou) and walked about in. To me this looks like a stripped down, lightweight Jerven bag .... i have a primaloft king size jerven (silly expensive) it could and has be used as a 2-3 season sleeping bag but for winter i tend to use it as a double size bivi bag, (its not perfect, as it has mild condensation issues, think it is more suited to snowy conditions rather than the wet uk) ... i would recommend testing this out before you plan to use it, you might be able to get away with a jungle bag or softie suit inside it even in a UK winter)

In mild conditions I would rather use a separate tarp or a poncho in addition to a poncho liner that doubles up as sleeping bag just like a HeliconTex swagman pro does. When you set up camp you’re losing your insulation unless you’re carrying an additional sleeping bag around. In that case you still have your insulation only in form of your sleeping bag. I simply doubt that this insulated tarp provides enough insulation against windchills. But that’s only what I’d do and I’m not a soldier in arctic conditions.

So interesting moving between communitys... Its a bit funny to se things that are a couple of years old (materials and sutch) in the thrue hike/ultralight community are "new" to the "tactical community". As a ultralight hiker and a active serving Marine its so interesting how far behind the tactical/milirairy community are... We need to get that base weight down in the militairy! That material are still quite heavy to me, but its a step in the right direction. (700g are heavy in the ultralightcommunity, but its right on par for a synthetic product and that design benefis from being synthetic so good choice. I prefer synthetic even if its a bit heavyer as an insulation) According to physiotherapists research thats bean done in the swedish militairy and confirmed by civilian studys you should not carry more then 15% of your body weight... For me thats about 15kg... If I put on my kit and backpack at work at the marines its about 42kg total... There's the answer to a lot of the injuries service staff gets...

Velcro, especially long sections, I would have thought would be non-tactical for the original intended users, maybe for civilian versions, but I do not personally like Velcro, even using the tactical technique shown on this channel, too noisy, I like to be quiet in the woods or field, like to be stealthy, avoiding scaring the wildlife, or alerting people who might try to do harm. Hard to trust people these days, better to be super careful. Better to be like the animals of the forest. Quiet snaps, I have seen these when joining a poncho liner to a poncho in many configurations, possibly bungee cord and loops or toggles, bungee cord would aid suspension too and take the wind shock when used as a shelter, lace-up using ball bungee or toggle bungee in short sections might work, but long cord lace-up would again be non tactical and slow when needing to bug out or in an emergency. I am a fan of bungee cord as it has multi uses and takes the wind shock strain out of fabrics under tension. Just mho, I am no expert but I have made a lot of my own gear and we learn by mistakes. I made many. Stay safe everyone

Is that a 60mm ocular lens on the rifle?

That's pretty cool. It's inspired me to want to do a similar, static test with a half segment of my Hungarian laavu 👍😁

Is this made from that new material call "ultra" UHMWPE? If it is, It's pretty tough like kevlar and it really new technology. It is as light as DCF but much stronger/abrasion resistant. Still it's noisy lol.

The way you were sitting showed a whole heap of the white reversible side in your sniper hide! A nice bulls-eye, or should I say "balls-eye" for an enemy to aim at. Ouch! :-)
