Is it possible to go out with you sometime. I have some free diving experience from spearfishing in the Caribbean, want to get in on it out here on the coast, but looking for a buddy. I was having a hard time to see where it is legal to spearfish, but regardless views and marine life look incredible.

Try leaving something sizable at the bottom. I know guys that would leave a bait bag on a line. I even know of guys leaving their guns on floatlines. Go around and collect some urchin or scallops just to come back to their gun with a territorial ling laying right next to it. That can be a tall order in 60ft of water though.

Nice video and some nice fish on that stringer! Looking forward to a video review on the Banks Board. I am 62 years old and used to work with Jay Riffe when he worked out of his garage in Laguna. I have been making custom guns since 1985. One thing I'll say: your brain is the best safety. I do not put them on any of my guns.
@HideshiIzu
@HideshiIzu 2 жыл бұрын
I think a safety is great as an extra measure of caution but I agree, the best safety practice is to make sure that you are using the gun in a safe manner.
@Twebartist
@Twebartist Жыл бұрын
I agree with rolanwheeler: I discourage using safeties on spearguns. They can spook fish when you line up to take the shot having forgotten it was on, and if you see a fish from the surface that you have to immediately dive on and shoot, it’s another thing to slow you down and cause you to miss your opportunity. But most important, they are a safety concern because they can cause the following to happen. I was diving one day with the only gun I own that has a safety, and I pulled the trigger while the safety was on, having forgotten to turn it off. As you know, the gun did not fire. However, when I turned the safety off right afterwards, the gun fired. I don’t mean I turned the safety off, pulled the trigger, and it fired. I mean the moment I turned the safety off it fired. Without me touching the trigger. This is super dangerous because when you’re turning the safety off, you’re not paying attention to what the gun is pointed at, and if it’s pointed at your buddy, game over. Plus a ton of other potential hazards like ricochet, firing out of the water, firing delayed until a while later, etc. Just not worth it.

really nice place to spearfish. i just used a pole spear 2 days ago around there. those rockfish are not as smart as calico & sand bass i'm use to in so-cal. got a kelp rockfish & a pile perch in a little 20 min dive. up close a pole spear would seem sufficient for those type of fish. though i also use the same pole spear for white sea bass when one happens to swim by

In the beginning of the dive, spear a small perch or blue and hook it to your gun. If you can keep it alive, that would be ideal. Then place your gun on a fishy bottom. If there are lings in the area, they will show up within minutes. Once you see one, dive down for your gun. Those lings will not swim away. Try it next time and see if it work for you. Happy hunting.

@@HideshiIzuMonterey usually doesn’t have a lot of sharks because it’s not warm enough for them. And the sharks that do live here aren’t dangerous like leopard sharks or seven gill sharks. There was shark attack at lovers point this year but that barely ever happens. Your more likely to attract a seal or sea lion than a shark.

You're diving into a place so poorly visible ,that diving into a plate of lentil soup might be more fun🙉 , as for the way you shoot underwater, shoot for hunting, and the sizes of fish you catch. It says that you are still at the beginning, in addition to that you ignore your safety by diving among the many intertwined underwater plants that may hide inside it any type of giant moray eel or coral octopus, both of which may grab any of your limbs and remain clinging to the rock in which they dwell even if For few minutes , it's very dangerous to you in a free diving without air tanks, (it's a very high risk of your life for a fish; no matter how big it could be !!!). But I wish you more beautiful posts and safe adventures soon. My best wishes

Visibility in this video was 15-20 ft, it was pretty great. We don't have moray eels here. Spearfishing with tanks is not real spearfishing hahaha
