That strategy is called "Spearing the Sparrow", a typical attacking strategy against Yagura. If you simply allow your opponent to make that attack, you'll definitely lose the game. So, when your opponent is going for 'spearing the sparrow', you must try to make a counter attack on your opponent's offense, or attack on his King faster than him.

Yeah, that's called "spearing the sparrow", one of good attack strategies in Yagura. But it tends to end up being a straight and simple attack, which allows your opponent to carefully deal with it and counterattack. So you should learn some other attacking strategies as well.

@Conelead You shouldn't assume that S-4b means he's playing static rook. He might be making such a move to make you think he's playing static rook - so if you play G-7h, then he'll suddenly play S-4c and then R-4b, and now your gold on 7h is a bad shape. Keep making moves that would be good against ranging rook until he decides to stick with static rook, then you can go back to transitioning into Yagura.

Great video, I hope one day you will have the time to make more videos on the yagura opening :)

I was wondering about a transposition into Yagura I have encountered a few times already. P7f P3d P2f P4d P5f S4b White looks like he is going to play 4th file rook but then plays S4b instead of R4b. Usually from here I transpose into Yagura with a different move order, but I was wondering what other options are from this position. My instincts tell me that there should be something else effective I can do from this position, both as white and as black. Thank you.

White can do that. But since he has made additional move of P-8e, his attack will be one move slower than the example I showed you in the video.

What happens if after White go P-7d Black and White play in this way, S-5g, G-5b, S-7g, S-3c, S-6h from the right, B-3a, S-6g, P-4d and finally B-7i, I know that now is White's turn instead of Black's turn, I know that I made a Silver Yagura and have to attack with the gold and I know that the Pawn still in 3g square, but while I make this silver yagura what White can do? The P-3g move is necessary in this case or I can move another piece in Black's turn?

Hello, I hope you still check for comments. I am just learning Shogi. Based on my studies so far, I have decided to use Static Rook and Yagura as Black. I was very happy to find this video. I have a question. from the position @ 6:40, if White plays P-8e (forcing S-7g from Black) can White still play the Yagura Central Rook, or it not as effective with the pawn on 8e?

I'll make S*8g Variation in Side Pawn Picker, but recently I don't have much time to spend on making videos.

What happen if White moves, such for example, 9th file Pawn, then Lance and finally Rook to 9b as well. Then there's a pawn, a lance, a rook and a bishop at 3a attacking the pawn at 9g, which will only have Knight, Lance and King (which can be easily checked) now to defend. That is, after Black King moved into 8h castle and the Black Bishop is at 6h already. Because that's how last time my Yagura got broken and I lost the game because of it.

When black does rapid castling at one point in the video, you showed how white could do a rapid attack in response, and you stated that that didn't look good for black. Why doesn't that rapid attack work if black does normal castling? (ps -- I don't know much about shogi at all... I've just watched a lot of your videos. That's about it!)

It’s Japanese for tower, keep, or castle. Yaguras are defensive opening strategies where you surround the king with pieces to defend him from eventual attacks and dropped enemy pieces.
