I think a once-around orbit to see the lay of the land, then a static shot from behind the customer's boat with both boats in view would be good. It was neat to see an aerial shot of the sandbar and other underwater features, and seeing the position of the boat on the sandbar. I imagine this could help you figure out the best direction to approach a boat and pull it free if they are far from deeper water.

Loved the drone footage. I just recently learned put the drone in sports mode when landing it in your hand…grab it carefully with a couple fingers and drone shuts off on its own. I used to flip it until I learned this better and safer way. Had to practice…but much better now.. POI is good in the boat being rescued
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
I'll have to try that. Another viewer suggested sport mode for catching to disable the sensors, but didn't say anything about not having to flip it
@nestatuffgong3 ай бұрын
Yeah in sports mode, no flip required, make sure drone sees your hand reaching up …you may have to press down on your controller a bit, grab it… shuts off every time. At least DJI 4 pro does…should be the same for other DJI’s

Thanks! I'll give it a shot later today 👍

As a DJI drone owner, I thank you for using yours in this video. You need to learn more about the advanced features of the drone, but also how to tell your drone to follow the location of its remote so it can land where YOU ARE during low battery situations, unattended. Yes, you can also have it track you while filming, or the subject boat but unattended landing using your remote as its landing location will save you from having an accidental water landing or loss of your drone. The other feature you will enjoy learning is the automated flight path. You can program the drone to fly a preset path. Using this feature, the drone can fly around both boats, unattended. You can also set up way points and tell the drone when to move from one position to another while keeping both boats in the frame. You can also have it fly, while following you or while tracking the clients' boat. All you will have to remember is that the drone will only be able to stay up for a while before it will need to land to have you swap batteries. For long runs, you will need to have a spare battery charged and ready to be loaded.
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
It's not capable of doing some of those things. It's the mini 3 pro, so it can track a single object laterally or orbit it, but no waypoints. Also, I can update the Home point to the controller but that's done manually

I was listening to this gentleman as he asked about how often you performed this "Service" & in the back of my mind I felt like it;s the natural thinking about the CO$Ts involved ? No telling what he was thinking but I was thinking about it & I'd have been working the math out in my own mind as to the value. Running my costs & such, if I were him. Good job & the drone did give an adequate picture of the trouble he was in. They'd have cooked out there before the tide came back in enough to leave. That made the service well worth it, in my humble non boat owning opinion. As usual, nice job. peace

Excellent drone angle!! The orbiting is good, but I think positioning it so both boats are in the frame would be good and it looks like the static position behind the boat was a good view. The height was excellent because you could clearly see the sea floor nad the angle you needed to travel to get him unstuck. Is the orbiting causing the batteries to drain faster?
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
Thanks Patrick! The general consensus seems to be orbit is cool if both boats can stay in frame, otherwise static POV. Also, yes. Orbiting seems to be draining the batteries a bit faster

The orbiting drone shot was good, maybe can it orbit a little slower. Or what if it, can it do a race track orbit where it centers on tow boat then on towed boat. Having it orbit gives some perspective on the location.

What's your views on the stealth propellers on the drone
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
I had the master airscrew stealth on my old mavic pro, and boy did that make a difference compared to the OEM props, so I figured i'd give them a shot on my mini 3 pro. I can't say I noticed too much difference in the sound profile, and I wasn't paying attention to flight times either...but they look cool anyways, so for $14, why not go with them?

I’m curious why you (or at least your TB location) doesn’t require the occupants of tows to don pfd while under tow. I thought it was policy everywhere and one of the first rules of towing.
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
Because once you require something, if something goes wrong, you can be held liable. Our contract with towboat us corporate used to require all of the tow captains to wear a life jacket, until a location had an accident where the captain died because he was wearing one. I don't know the full story, but from what I heard...it was an enclosed cabin, boat capsized, captain was unable to get out of his lifejacket and was therefore unable to escape from the cabin and drowned.

@Jim-sh1zs3 ай бұрын
Are you aware of the dynamic tow rope used in off road recovery. See Matt’s Off-road Recovery and you will see how this rope stretches and then recovers to its intended length. Many times that little bit of extra pull the rope affords is enough to break a a stuck vehicle out of mud or sand. There no jerk like there would be doing the same thing with a static rope. Might be a new useful tool. Keep stirring those shift levers ha ha.
@RHaarFl3 ай бұрын
Ever heard of snap back? There is a reason not to use elastic tow lines, except for the stretcher when using a dynema main line You want a breaking tow line to drop into the water and not snap into the boats or worse the crew, cutting some one into two
@Animalwon3 ай бұрын
@@RHaarFl Those ropes he is referring are rated in the thousands of pounds. They dont break unless you far exceed this "weight" rating. They were originally used in the Marine industry. This SNAP BACK is mitigated by putting a weight in the middle of the rope so when it snaps back, it is being forced by gravity to hit the ground and never reach back to either tow vehicle. The weight is usually nothing heavier than the weight of a large towel, which is what most use.
@RHaarFl3 ай бұрын
@@Animalwon what about the attaching points on the towed boat… 🤭
@CaptNickRivelli3 ай бұрын
The main problem with these ropes is that they’re nylon and they sink. Makes it really easy to get them tangled in your props when you’re getting in position to pull. Polypropylene, polyolefin, or dyneema are what most towboats use because they float.
@CaptKenO3 ай бұрын
Yes. I am aware of them. They won't work for use because they sink, so all that kinetic energy is wasted pulling it back up through the water.
