The RV road trip continues and we are trying to outrun a winter storm in New Mexico. The snow makes for some very intense motorhome driving.

Thanks for watching our video. Let's take a second to fill in the blanks that you can not see in the video. We are from Alaska and have plenty of experience driving PROPERLY EQUIPPED vehicles in some of the worst winter weather you could imagine. In this case we were not in a properly equipped vehicle. In this video we were driving our 2wd 1999 32' class A motorhome with highway tires and towing a 3500# trailer. As many of you know coming to a stop facing up hill on a snow covered road with that vehicle would not work out well so we pulled off. We are now traveling in a new to us 4x4 expedition RV and snowy weather is not an issue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmWUY2WZm5iBd5Y

It's a great video the old lady has the typical she paranoia about her. Me and Chrissy survived a blizzard in Butte Montana 12 degrees below Zero in our 36 foot 2X4 with some grippers on the rear but like all Women are we headed to Walmart parking lot exactly like you did at Chrissy's demands. Chrissy says to me as it starts to get cold with the engine off that this is a good time to test that wood stove you built in here. I said yes in deed it is and she bails and goes into the store for I don't know how long. In the mean time I shoulda had made a video of me fighting the frozen pad lock on the trailer to get at the fire wood. Like all women Chrissy only comes back after I bloodied a hand and broke a finger she has a big smile a huge bag with chips and tub of cheese dip with a block of Ring Bologna and lots of soda with some other crap guys don't touch she then says to me why is it still cold in here. It was even colder yet when I rudely said you mind the friggin fire. I then brushed my teeth and went to bed without her. It was 10 minutes later when she saw all the frozen blood all over the door and some I missed on the table seat. Then as it warmed up I got my snacks in bed. She realized she shoulda helped me open the trailer because even the doors were frozen shut is how I broke my finger and ripped my hand open. Needless to say I also tore my new sweatshirt... Now days we use the RV for warm weather travels. That trip was the last in the winter. I had about a weeks firewood in the trailer and food on board but geezus shit we used up 3 days worth that trip the roads stayed closed and just how much can y'all walk around inside a friggin Walmart without going nutz or getting attentions from personnel especially when ya try to explain to security when one or the other leaves to go put a piece of wood in the little home made wood stove and all the while hoping the RV ain't on fire when ya get out to it... No more winter RVing for us... Fortunately the Walmart folks had a bigger sense of humor about than we did. We even had 2 of the managers come check out our rig. They really liked the ah snake skin pattern shower curtain I got in Calif. for 6 bucks at a yard sale I told em...

This is why you need a CB radio. The truckers are talking about what it is whether it's an accident like a spun a car or a big rig accident how long it might be closed are the police there are tow trucks there and exactly what mile marker it's at. Truck stops sell 40 channel walkie talkies for the rubber ducky antenna for $60 it would be good to get one and leave in your glove box just to pull out and listen to in such an event. or even pull it out when the weather starts to get bad and leave it up on your dash so you can hear what's going on. the other suggestion is your smartphone should have any app in it like I have what's called "My Radar" app. I watch storms come at me roll over the top me and disappear in the distance while it's happening live.

You also reminded me of my days running a snow plow on the highways in Minnesota and all the cars would line up behind me in white-out conditions and I swear I could hear them thinking, "follow the snow plow, he knows where the road is!" and I'm thinking, "Don't follow me, I can't see the road either-Crap, that sign shoudn't be there!" You have to look at things like this as an adventure..You guys are in a self contained RV and you have everything you need for awhile..I would much rather be in the middle of nowhere but close enough for phone communication then anywhere else....The key is to stock up on everything you need and top off all tanks and then head out into what ever adventure you find..:)..It all depends on how you look at it..You could either be caught up in the traffic or you can relax and enjoy the show..Stop worrying and enjoy the thrill of it all...!!..I toured out West all i could for 38 years and had the time of my life..It's not all meant to be gravy..Sometimes you have to be willing to take a chance to receive the adventure..

As a former Walmart driver w 20 years with the fleet, all these RV’ers and outside carriers would usually trash the place (pee bottles, trash bags, etc), and also make it difficult for us fleet guys to find a place to park, cause we would run later into the night and these clowns would park anyway and anywhere, even had some OTR guys park in our dock area. What a pain in the ass, glad I’m retired and don’t have to deal with it anymore.

I understand you’re scared, but it’s ok. You gotta be prepared for this if you’re traveling in an RV willingly. Weather happens, especially in winter. If you’re that scared about it, don’t travel in winter. The roads didn’t even look icy at all. But always trust your instincts. If you wanted to pull over, good. You also need to just chill out and enjoy it. It’s part of the weather. Park, have a drink, and enjoy yourselves.

Randyl J If you were in NC last week did you get to enjoy the crazy amounts of snowfall we got a week ago starting on Saturday? I live in North Carolina in Surry county in a region called the foothills. We happen to be on the eastern side of the BlueRidge and due to that we rarely get more than 5 inches and generally we get the dreaded wintery mix which can seriously be worse than a heavy snowfall. Sunday morning we woke up to over 18 inches of heavy wet snow that wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. The 20+ inches broke any previous records for the last 20-30 years. It didn’t help that the overnight temperatures were dropping down into the lower 20s and upper teens. The last couple of hours of the storm was sleet and freezing rain so everything developed a hard crust on top. Many lost electricity because of the heavy weight of snow and ice on the power lines. Schools were closed Monday through Thursday and had a 3 hour delay on Friday with the option to close because another storm was hitting us overnight into Friday and they weren’t sure if it would be more snow and ice or cold rain. Thankfully it was rain that washed away most of the snow, but it was causing flash flooding in areas. Hopefully that was the biggest snow for this winter. Last winter started in October before Halloween and didn’t end until well after Easter in April and it broke all of the records for the coldest winter temperatures. I think it would be interesting to live like you do traveling around in your home on wheels. Not something I will ever get to do with my different health issues and limitations they cause.

Well done getting to the Walmart! Not much fun driving in snow, even in a car with 4 wheel drive! I think it is better to be parked a little near civilization in bad weather! Take care xxxx

I drove a class A through a foot of snow during a blizzard with no problems whatsoever, tires didn't even spin. You should have no trouble whatsoever just don't go real fast 😀

I lived in New Mexico for years and the roads are very well maintained during snow storms. Never had trouble driving. They use lava rock mixture for the roads.

Camping in Walmart parking lot is wise. You’ve got unlimited supply as long as you have credit card.

I am also what they call "professional driver" a.k.a. TRUCK DRIVER. I have traveled is some of the craziest weather and like the PD said, if you don't feel comfortable don't drive. Most accidents are caused by BAD JUDGMENT .... As we say in the industry "Stay Safe & MAKE IT HOME 🏠!

I know. It would be no different than being snowbound in your own home. The only thing they're lacking is a small wood stove and wood chips, or some of those long burn logs that could be used to heat and cook on. They actually make the smaller wood stoves for vans and campers now, in different sizes, along with wood chips or long last burn logs, etc. You can even cook on them, as well as additional heat, in case your gas runs out.
