There's literally dozens of rewrites and AUs across the internet that actually improve the narrative and world building of shows that have suffered from subpar/mediocre (if not worst) writing e.g: RWBY. And like you said those folks take their personal time to do these improved stories for free (sometimes just for fun too).

Budget is a HUGE deflection. If ONE can get his webcomics off the ground with simplistic drawings and get an offer for a reboot manga, anime adaptation based off said reboot manga, and video games based off his works, then clearly he's doing things right. Same goes for franchises like Crayon Shin-Chan. Two years was more than enough time to make something interesting. 730 days (731 if leap year occurred (I've forgotten if a leap year was involved for the most part). 24 hours a day. You had all that time...

There's the first season of Kemono Friends too. It was HEAVILY criticized for its lackluster animation, the VAs were all newbies (or so I've heard, that's how the budget stayed so low), but the heart and soul poured into that first season resonated with viewers. It then became a fan favorite a few episodes in, until the studio went with a s2, but that's a different story. Restrictions can breed creativity. Look at the OG Final Fantasy theme or the limitations set by Bethesda to Mick Gordon on DOOM 2016. The strict time limits and strict music specifications gave way to some amazing things. And while I can't think of any show beside Kemono Friends that had a small budget that became a beloved show, I'm sure there's plenty of other examples if we look hard enough.

Your comment reminded me of Sunstone. It started as a bunch of random drawings Stephan Sejic made, while he had writers block. Then he grew a liking to the characters and fledged out a story about them. People liked it so much, he started to look and later found a publisher for a hardcover book version and the start of a complete series. I highly doubt it will ever get a TV series thanks to its mature content, but it is an exzellent example of how doing an Author Tract story right.

What did Raye think was going to happen? That people would go and say "oh you poor thing. We're sorry, your show was very good"? Did he want pity? What's worse than making a bad show? Making a bad show and being unable to take any criticism of any sort. Man, this guy's acting really childish over the backlash. It's fine to be upset over your creation being dogged on. Who wouldn't feel that way? But flat out gunning down any and all criticism even if it's the helpful kind is just childish. High Guardian Spice is a failure of a show, and it'll take the finger of God to give it a second season.

Unfortunately it is because many of the people that are in the animation and comic industry are childish adults (meaning adults who are still emotionally children)and have no real life experiences or lived such sheltered lives they can not cope with the real world. Look at JMS and Babylon 5 where that show was always on the verge of cancellation but there was a line given to the Minbari that summed up the his belief in the show "Faith Manages." Raye on the other hand naively believed from the get go that his show was going to be an instant and beloved hit by the masses regardless of quality. But now he has to live with the fact that HGS will go down as a cautionary tale of what not to do in an animated production.
@Avarn388
@Avarn388 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pegas105 it also helped that JMS had contingency plans like no tomorrow for B5 and had a lot of careful planning. I have very little sympathy for Raye because he clearly wants to blame someone other than himself. If your animation budget was so low, prioritize certain elements. Action scenes too hard? Cut them for characterization, dialogue and world building. Writing will always be timeless and it is the thing people will cling to the most. Why was it that Arcane was so well-received? Animation aside(it took them six years to develop, most of the time was for the tech I believe), its writing was really sharp and clear cut. High Guardian Spice could have been like that. But overall, it was a half-baked project, made by a company who clearly wanted their own "anime" and was constantly advertised as this stunning and brave thing when in truth it looked uninspired and very generic/ one note. If I want a magical school series, I'll just watch Little Witch Academia.

First rule of responding to criticism: saying anything more than “we’ll take this under consideration for the future” is too much. Instead of going on a rant about people who didn’t like your show or why their complaints are “invalid because of budget” (which is bullshit looking at writing), take what’s been said and see how you can apply that. If it’s not applicable at all, or useless, just ignore it. (Applying this to shows, and to an extent games) It’s that simple, bros.

What Raye also failed to take account. The shows on CN nowadays are 11 minutes. But they still are budgeted the same as 13 episode season shows. You get 26 episode seasons. Which are really 13. He had 12 episodes. One less than usual. Second, anime lots of times gets worse budgets for their shows. Unless you're Studio Dean doing Seven Deadly Sins. The majority are fine animation wise. Just limited.

_(TL;DR at the bottom)_ All those tweets tell me is that Raye isn't going to learn from this experience because they aren't mature enough to properly identify the problems. That's one of the biggest red flags for NOT putting someone in a position of power; they won't know how to pivot the team before they crash and burn. HGS's failure is the result of a lack of planning, experience, flexibility, and possibly time management, and an *severe* excess of ego (considering they still don't understand why the first trailer was a bad trailer). More money and a union isn't going to fix those problems. It's also a (faulty) explanation, *but not an excuse.* _It's also not the customers' problem._ And I say that as someone working in customer service for most of their life. The problems we have in the store, unless directly caused by a customer, are NOT their problem. Flipping out like a child is never okay, but if the roles were reversed (crew was the customer and vice versa), each would still be just as angry/frustrated at whatever the situation was. Y'know, unless you have a situation like this where the manager, so to speak, doesn't even know what the problem _is._ It just makes you wonder who the hell put them in charge and WHY. It's also especially not the customers' fault that you aren't in a union. That just tells them that you lack integrity; that you have to be coerced into doing your job, or else you're just going to sit there and collect a check. If you aren't going to work properly without a union, *leave and go somewhere where there is one.* Flip it around: Why the hell would you keep, let alone PAY, an employee that refuses to do their job properly for whatever reason? All of that, plus Raye mouthing off on social media and proving without a doubt that they had no idea WTF they were doing would convince me to never, EVER, put them in charge of anything. That's if I would even hire them in the first place, considering they're damaging the brand by saying that the show isn't anime...on a network where the majority of customers are chiefly concerned with their money going to Japanese (I think?) studios that produce ANIME. You're already getting backlash from being an American studio. This is just making it worse; *SHUT UP.* *TL;DR:* "Anything you try and don't succeed at, if you learn from it, it's not a failure." Raye's tweets have shown that they have learned nothing. And thus, High Guardian Spice is an absolute failure. Way to go, Raye!

Did read it all, a great comment. To stretch out the analogy a tiny bit more... You especially would fire and never hire somebody again if they didn't do their job or did their job badly and their reason for it was "well, YOU didn't give me enough to work with!". ... Because I don't think that's something Raye quite thought about when he made those posts. Bosses and managers do sometimes look at social media, and anyone who does can see that he threw the company and those he worked with under the bus when the project and its reception didn't turn out the way he wanted, taking zero responsibility.

" they're damaging the brand by saying that the show isn't anime...on a network where the majority of customers are chiefly concerned with their money going to Japanese (I think?) studios that produce ANIME. You're already getting backlash from being an American studio." This is literally the reason why the show was pushed back so much. There was so much backlash when Crunchyroll first teased the show that they literally put it on the backburner and hoped people would forget about it. I forget exactly what happened around this time, but I'm pretty sure CRoll had just raised their subscription fees or something and their excuse for doing so was that they wanted to actually pay the Japanese studios for broadcasting their stuff, and then they start teasing "Crunchyroll original anime" right after. And literally no one was happy because Crunchyroll had literally lied about what those fees were being used for.

Thats like being an animal activist and shooting a fox that took your flower to gift his mate cause now that one part of your garden is ruined. Budget has nothing to do with bad writing, having no idea what you are doing is what creates writing bad. 5:38 I legit had to take a 2 minute pause just to sit and process what I was seeing. Nothing, absolutely nothing Zio said was in any way negative to HGS and they even complemented the show. That was the definition of "most charitable interpretation". I get that Raye must be going through a lot right now considering something he worked hard on is getting lambasted from every corner, but just blocking out anyone who says something that isn't obnoxiously positive about your show not only is a bad look for you but also blocks you from learning anything for the future and doing better for later works.

Rayes tweet actually made me unfollow him. I’m so tired of when a show is bad people blame production, but if it’s good then them working with a bad budget gets praise? All works should have a budget, but a budget isn’t an excuse to be bad! Raye mentioning the Cartoon Network thing really rubbed me the wrong way as well. If CN can get through this in a way as you described then take notes from them? Simplify the designs! Maybe use a smaller time format! I just hate the excuses used! AND acting like everyone on earth is an anti SJW and that’s why people hate it is absurd. Steven Universe and RWBY both have casts of mostly women and even tho both have flaws each still has a genuine fan base and doesn’t need to rely on cheap excuses to reason why people would t like them. RWBY isn't really a good example, because their creators have also done these things, AND they bake their real feeling towards their critics into the show (Watts, season 8, for example). I find it funny how, for all this harassment Raye keeps citing from people who seemingly didn’t care for his show, there’s a lot of videos and critiques that try to rewrite the series and make it better. Maybe because, on a subconscious level, people might’ve seen the potential in HGS and wanted it to be somewhat decent? I mean, sure, some toxic vids dismissed it as trash and moved on, but a large majority of essays focus on that angle. People really liked Axe girl and Snapdragon; make a series featuring them and listen to the feedback and you’re golden. But, sadly that’s not how these people see it.

Haven't made any videos on the matter myself, but that's kind of how I see this show. Quite a bit of potential for an interesting world and story, wasted. The most frustrating parts of the show to me were fascinating ideas or moments that weren't as explored or well-defined as they could have been, or bits that could have worked better with just some slight writing tweaks. People like me criticize the show or rewrite bits because we want to see it be good. If we want something to be bad, or simply don't care for it to improve, we either ignore it or just sit and laugh at it.

It says something with Literature Devil was able to rewrite HGS in such a way that made the series halfway decent. I really can't stand the whole deflecting criticism by blaming budget. Some of the best pieces of media had to deal with budget/ constraints. For example, the movie Jaws the mechanical shark kept breaking down so Spielberg came up with the Shark cam to compensate and only showed the shark at the ending. The result gave us a better movie, making more in line with Dracula. The same can be said about South park and the Simpsons who also had low budgets but their writing is still sharp. A lack of resources suck. Especially if you are on a very strict time table. But it is up to the creatives to work within their constraints. Can't afford much animation, trim down the fight sequences. Focus on characterization and plot. Good writing is timeless. Just look at old works, like Twelve Angry Men, Tom and Jerry/ Looney Tunes?

On top on that Ben 10 Reboot is a cartoon targeted at cartoon fans. HGS is a cartoon targeted at anime fans. No wonder it doesn't work. Raye blocking Kamen is slightly funny to me, since he was actually nicer to the show than a lot of other people were. Not as nice as Zio was there, but still. As for the tweets themselves... MangaKamen brought this up, but I'll ramble on it too since the tweets do mention it. "Also maybe in another timeline HGS wouldn't have been roped into the culture wars from its first trailer and marked as BAD years before it came out." As MangaKamen pointed out, some of that hate was due to them making a Western-style animated show as an original piece for a Japanese anime streaming service. Doing this with Crunchyroll was already a step off a cliff. But beyond that, the "trailer" was more of a showcase of Elation Studios and bragging about how "diverse" and "inclusive" the staff are than actually being about the show, and even much of the show talk was more them hyping it up as this revolutionary piece. Whether the "trailer" was an active decision on their part or a corporate mandate, that gave most people who saw it ample reason to think the show would be bad. We didn't just hate on it for no reason. ... Also people compare this show to anime because, again, it's on a platform with lots of other anime. Also a lot of its world and story ideas, and even character design cues, were taken from anime. ALSO, as awful as it is, many anime have had even smaller budgets than this probably did (I say probably because there's no official statements on this show's budget) and even worse working conditions for its staff, but they still turned out better in just about every way. ... And to parrot the point most people make in response to this, writing ain't a budget matter. Time constraints can... kind of affect writing quality, but some of this show's writing problems are things that should have been sorted before even beginning production. Anyway, I hope MangaKamen recovers smoothly, and I hope you all have a good week and remember to examine your fandom.

To be fair towards the creator, I can understand being upset that a show they obviously cared about was getting a lot of hate and vitriol. And I also understand that it came at the worst possible time since everyone hated crunchy roll, and the show became the face of why everyone hated them. But holy crap, that was not the way to take criticism. Ignore it if you can, and maybe give explanations as to why it didn't turn out well, but don't shut them down and block them. As hard as it is, take the loss, learn what you can from it, and move on. Also, I get that hiring writers is part of the budget issue, but I have seen plenty of good writing done for free, or in other low budget pieces of media. In some cases, they get better budgets because people like the writing so much. I don't think hiring better writers would have been expensive, they just hired the wrong ones. I also find it funny that Raye as the show runner was not complaining about been paid less than other show runners due to the budget, or that they had to pay people less than union rates for their work because of the budget, or they had to hire the worst voice acting because of the budget, Raye doesn't understand that the public does know what a show runner's role is in any production due to people like Noel Stevenson and Kevin Smith. I understand Raye is a simp for unions (the twitter thread has made that clear) and this twitter thread sounds like they are admitting to under paying people because they weren't union. I would say that the trans character would have some potential to be interesting if they would put them in a dilemma about it. He needs the potion to keep it up right? so what would happen if you put him in a position that he can't get to it or potentially losing it forever? Or maybe potentially loosing it's effectiveness after taking it over a long time? However given the creator's attitude, even thinking about the allegory about those possibilities would put him in an existential crisis.

Also, the fact that the trans potion only lasts a month means that there are zero stakes for Snapdragon to experiment with gender. If the spell was permanent, then Snapdragon would have to actually do some serious soul-searching and character development and it would give them high stakes if they make the wrong choice and transition without first making 110% sure they identify as a woman. Yeah, Twitter isn't exactly the best place to toss out explanations, but the problem we face here is that (much like most other people who have what we could call an insecure problem), if you are blocking people who actually express actual issues, it can come off as you being tone deaf. It isn't like everyone who got blocked was doing it as an attack (as what was pointed out). There were plenty of issues, but I keep reflecting on the idea of how "a low budget means less time to write." And that's... kind of a slap in the face of anyone who has tried to write a script; let alone a story. Even if your back is to the wall, if you got your passion project green lit and you find yourself making it become a reality, you probably would be giving yourself as many sleepless nights working on that script. It's unfortunate the end result was what it was, but overall, the bigger glaring issue still presists. And if he does decide to continue with High Guardian or scrap it, the bigger issue now is the giant Red X hovering above his head that many will not hesitate to point to if people want a "first opinion." I've seen plenty of content creators on KZbin actually go out of their way to not only point out the numerous flaws, but to more specifically... correct them. It isn't to say a... How did they put it in their 2018 trailer? *pulls up "Coming 2019" trailer* "A writing room with 100% female," wouldn't have caught on to the problems. But it does feel like somewhere along the way, no one took the time to read through the script of the episodes and really reflect on what was going to be happening on screen or question how they were really going to hook viewers into watching the show (much less have the world building figured out since it does feel like things are hysterically off balanced and how it seems like any male that would identify as straight would either come off as a complete and total ass, or so completely meh to the world, we call him Slime Boy). As someone who wants get into creative writing (and also random writing articles for the lovely world of Video Games), I have grown a weird fascination into watching reviews for this series since it has been telling me what I need to do if I really want to take fiction writing seriously. It wouldn't be perfect, but I know that there are a lot of things that need to be taken into account before I would even consider trying to pass something off as a first draft. ... Apologies for the rant in the comment section. I doubt many would care to read these when they pop up and probably might come off as being too preachy or nagging... Hell knows the written word doesn't help to not make most people look at in a negative light nowadays... Still, I feel it is very much important to lay out thoughts for the hell of it. Complaining can be fun sometimes, but it isn't like I'm going to go out of my way to hate on something (at least not intentionally... My mind does like to wander while writing, thus these essays suddenly appear by the time I wake up from blacking out at the keyboard), but it does give me the idea that maybe if I do apply myself to something, maybe I could do something that I could call my own. Probably wouldn't amount up to much, but I can still try regardless. ... Not sure how I'll end this, so I'll just hit the sub and stop lurking. Thank you MangaKamen.

I feel sorry for the guy with all the hard work he has put into it, seeing your creation ripped apart like it has been. That said I feel that it is becoming a problem that creators do this kinda stuff when they get any type of critique good or bad put to them. Hearing what others have to say and taking that info to better your work is something that everyone should do. Given that the people giving you that input is often fans or people wanting to watch the show get better stabbing back and blocking them is pretty much is turning your back on the people that are making your work potentially popular and is well really alienizing to them. I hope that he does at least take what people say to heart if he is going to make any more work.

I didn't really go into this on other videos I've watched, but... 2:08 - *Writing?? budget* - Combined with what writers they could afford, I take it as one of two things: 1. His ideas weren't fleshed out very well, and he solely relied on the writers to fill out the rest for him. 2. His ideas were actually fleshed out somewhat, but he gave the writers way too much freedom to change things. If it's 1, it goes to show how little Raye planned out in advance. If Raye had the lore more carefully built, the show would have came out a lot smoother story-wise. With proper lore planning and direction, any writer can still do a decent/good job. If it's 2, this means that Raye was way too lax. Don't get me wrong, writers making suggestions on what they think could be better isn't a bad thing, a different eye can sometimes help. But at the end of day, it's still your show, you make the final calls. Mind you, I'm not excusing any of Raye's deflections. Given how Raye has taken this, it's obvious that he won't be learning from this anytime soon. 0:14 - 0:32 - It's funny. Most of the critical reviews I've seen put little to no focus on the staff(And when it does happens, it's usually Kate Leth). Hell, the most brutal review I saw(A multi-parter at that) is from a KZbinr who is LGBTQ+ themselves.

I feel some what bad for the creator, and I think this is why some are defending the show on Twitter. It can't be easy to have a passion project being bashed world wide But at the same time, is important to always have in mind that, art isn't perfect, and we will make mistakes on it. When people criticize your work, being a tv show, a comic, or even a fanfic, they are also expressing themselves. Their feeling on your work is valid as well, the work isn't just yours anymore. How they see it, feel about it or interpret, need to be respected. And is important to also keep in mind, that their feelings don't define your worth. Your work, your experience, bad criticism don't define them as a lost cause. You are not a loser for doing a bad piece of midia. There are of course, cases and cases. There are creators that don't try and want confetti for their work, and is hard to know who is actually trying and who isn't. But I feel that Raye Rodrigues missed the mark on Twitter. Blaming everything on budget don't fly. And it was better if he tried to be opened for the conversation I haven't seen a single person criticizing the show for being LGBTQ, or for the style. People actually have good criticism about the show and I think Raye should have being open to it Is similar to how I sometimes feel with fanfic writers. Not all of them, but some what to have the same respect that full published book writers, and screen writers have, but don't want the criticism. That is not hownit works. If fanfic is just for fun, cool, no criticism is necessary to be tolerated. But if you want to be a professional, you need to deal with the criticism, constructive or not. You are not a victim for having receive criticism on your work. Is part of the job

Judging by how the first trailer was made, they thought they could deliberately bait people hating on it because of the "diversity" and "first all female writing crew". So that it could get pity points and springboard from there. What they didn't expect was that the overwhelming incentive from all sides of the aisle pointed out that they clearly *weren't* anywhere near diverse, and they *weren't* the "first" of anything. Plenty of creators had women in their team, which was arguably more diverse by not caring about gender. They didn't brag about it. Never did, because they allowed their work to speak for itself. It didn't help that Raye hired Kate Leth, who shamelessly expressed misandrist views until she had to delete most of her social media posts to escape criticism. Go look up what happened to a show called "Gen: Zed" and see why it was dead on arrival. Wasn't even allowed to air, because the _creator was caught actively provoking people on 4chan, taking selective screenshots of their responses, and claiming that she was being harassed._

> I haven't seen a single person criticizing the show for being LGBTQ, or for the style I will say this, and say that it _is_ happening and I have seen people who are. I've noticed a few people even in this comment section (a small minority of course but a non-zero number no less) being blatantly transphobic and misgendering the creator, and in other video comment sections I've seen people say it's "SJW" not because it comes off as preachy but bring up the LGBT characters like the teacher as reasoning for why. *However,* and this is a big however, Raye may be right that SOME of the criticism is that, but acting like ALL of the criticism is that is not cool either. He's grouping the bad bunch with people like Kamen who are just giving genuine criticism and generalizing everyone as the "bad group,," even when it comes to people who were more nice and understanding like that one twitter person featured in the video. And of course, plenty of LGBT people don't like the show either. I am one and know plenty, and all of them say they take issue with the show from a writing standpoint and not the diveristy aspect. And we take issue with one of the writers not owning up to their sexist past too.

HGS is, even by Raye´s own admision, basically going to a Wendy´s for a burger and they give you a salad instead, but not even a good salad, just a bowl of lettuce with maybe a couple slices of tomato. Not only it´s not what you paid for, it´s not worth that price even if you did order a salad.

I had to unfollow the creator because of how they started locking comments and blocking anyone who provided valid critique. It’s one thing taking the critique personally but it’s another to just not take any whatsoever. Raye only responds to people who give them fully positive feedback and at that point you need just living in an echo chamber. Not healthy.

Im amazed at the stickiness this series is trying to be cus it will not settle on "maybe we were a bad show and need to just quietly own it and maybe give it a better go next time?" but nope. the workers while also throwing their employers under a bus (not really a crunchy roll fan in the slightest but whatever) get to pin the blame on everything but themselves for how received hgs was. To quote a "wonderful" lady. "gotta blame somebody otherwise its my fault."

If the show is on a budget they should have been able to either delay it or improve it. I get it animation is hard and I don’t know the all the behind the scenes drama of the source. That being said the product is there and as such should be critiqued like any work especially when it comes from a big studio like chrunchyroll who also produced mutiple original series.

I don't think Zio was rude. I think Raye needs to thicken that skin a little more, or, at least, be open to suggestions. How would Raye expect producing something amazing if they would rather be surrounded by 'yes men' and ignore valid, respectful criticism? Also, when Raye tried to explain that the bad writing was because of the budget...it feels like they're saying they hired cheap writers. Are they sure they want to die on that hill? 😬

I mentioned them on Hero_Hei's video on this, and I'll mention them here. The original G.I.Joe, Transformers, and TMNT cartoons, Lego Ninjago, Hot Wheels: World Race, Hot Wheels: Acceleracers. Not only did these shows (probably) have the same budget limits that HGS had, but they also had an even bigger issue holding them back. The issue that these shows were made not to tell a story, but to sell products. However, even with that being a big factor those behind making these shows buckled-down and did their best to produce shows that had at least decent stories that were fun, interesting, and even compelling. These shows are remembered for a reason, and it's not just rose-tinted nostalgia. Sure it's there, but it's not the main reason. It's because effort, care, and competence was put into these shows. They're not flawless, (nothing is), but the work put into them is present and accountable.

I said this on another video, I will say it here: Don't say your show has the budget of a Cartoon Network series if your quality cannot match Cartoon Network. Man of Action would wipe the floor with these people. HGS is also objectively worse than either early Gumball or Swat Kats, and has storyline consistency worse than _Top Cat._ As for pitching, it kinda is how that works? To my understanding, high-risk works often have to have most of the pre production and a chunk of viable product done before a company will even think about funding it. They really think I could go to WB with an elevator pitch and a dozen pages worth of sketches, and actually expect them to give me money? But no, CR didn't see this as high-risk, they green lit it because of identity politics and virtue signaling. Cradle to grave, this show was a soap box.

Being able to tell the difference between criticism and bias is also important. If most of the male cast characters are either jerks or unimportant. That's an audience lost. Not saying guys can't like shows with a mostly girl cast (I do low-key fuck with Sailor Moon). So having every cis hetero male as either a jerk, an ass, pompous, or unimportant. You're clearly sending a message there. That's criticism. There are like no guy characters, why are all the important roles for girls and everyone who isn't a guy. This is a bias.
@Tendo641

i don't think it's a coincidence either, one of the writers apparently has a history of being a "all cis men bad including men who try to be feminists bc if you don't have personal experience with being a woman you must hate women and are entirely unsympathetic to their plights" type and took pride in it when people criticized her for it. the thing that gets to me though is the fact the creator of the show is (to my knowledge) a trans guy. as another trans guy, i just don't understand why some other transmen feel the need to support blatant misandry in order to be one of the "good men" (because i guess you must hate yourself to not be a misogynist and also can't be cis), it's frustrating. you can be against misogyny and misandry at the same time. you can uplift. respect, and give positive representation to women without throwing your gender under the bus.

"The average budget of cartoon network that usually net 11 minutes per episode" Then how can you make a studio if you only has minimal budget? And you know what's funny? White cat legend, a donghua with half the duration of HGS become one of the best donghua in 2020 and i'm pretty sure it has less budget than HGS, but it still has beautiful animation anyway and when the final episode get delayed for week, the last episode got significant animation quality jump to compensate the delay, where HGS get delayed for 2 years and we get png bread. Is telling when a slice of life donghua about a cat man being a judge is seen as one of the best donghua of it's year. Hgs on the other hand? Is just a massive train wreck.
