I feel insulted that Caraway is the one representing trans people. I’m trans myself and maybe bisexual, still feeling the waters on that one. Anyway, seeing that all he is boils down to “I’m transgender” is bad. We are not defined by a single trait, we have so much more to us. We are people who are trans. Being trans is a part of us, not who we are. Yet the show thinks that being trans is good enough and they can stop developing his character there. I think he’s the professor that we spend the most time with so it’s not an excuse to say he’s a side character so that’s why they ignored literally everything else about him. That’s my rant on their portrayal of trans.

The only relatively good thing out of this was Snapdragon and Professor man’s (forgot the name) talk...even then the gender dysphoria came out of nowhere since his struggle was built more on toxic masculinity and wanting to me “feminine”, but not necessarily “female” Then again that’s my fault for expecting them to tackle the topic of being masculine or feminine without having “Just transition” as the answer (I’m a dude and I can be quite feminine and I’m still 100% secure being a man)

Yeah I never liked how the media depicts men who like girlier interests. Like at first theyre all gay or emo and now all men with feminine interests are gay or want to transition into a woman or are non-binary in some way. Of course they need and deserve representation but they certainly get more representation than a dude who just likes to paint his nails, go shopping in the mall, style his hair with hair accessories, maybe try out “women’s” clothes... it depends. But yeah it’s not like a man in real life can’t have more “girly” interests and still identify as male (and be any sexuality, including straight). It’s like a tom boy, but like... a tom girl I guess. It’s probably due to some sexist bs where “manly secure straight men cannot like girly things”

One of my favorite comics, Hack/Slash, had the titular character, Cassie Hack, end up in a relationship with another girl. This relationship took years to build up and wasn't truly solidified until the very end of the series' initial run. Hack/Slash had a solid and logical conclusion, but was needlessly revived with a new writer, Tini Howard, who reduced Cassie to a horny lesbian who'll fuck any girl who catches her eye. It took the entirety of the initial run for Cassie to reach a point where she could actually let another person get close enough to have a genuine relationship with her. Tini Howard ignored every part of Cassie's character aside from "was in a relationship with a girl".

Like Demon Slayer was created by a woman, Inu-Yasha is made by Rumiko Takahashi, a very iconic woman who is arguably one of the most famous mangaka in the world, she did other titles such as Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2... Especially some radical feminist groups, from what I have heard, treat trans men as having to be protected since they are born female and trans women as a threat since they 'are stealing real women's identities'. I love representation done like this, and there are really good examples in video games! For example in Nier: Automata, at one point an android needs you to recover her lover's stuff I think, and you discover that that lover was another female android. In Nier: Replicant, Kainé is intersex and Emil's gay but it's never thrown in your face, more like traits you see if you listen to the dialogues and quest details. Even in MWII where Laswell mentions her wife in a small convo. It's always subtle and not made to look like "Oh they're gay and that's it!" It's a part of their characters, not them as a whole.

I feel like the traveling segment they spent so much time on in episode one could've been condensed to a montage where each traveling method only gets a couple seconds shown and that on its own would've been a huge improvement just because of how much of a waste of time it is to drag that part out. Speaking of wasted time, I hate that they spent so much time on trixies in the first episode just to never use them in the series again. Episode one is the first and last episode I remember seeing those things in. Meanwhile the frog goats get a couple brief, unimportant appearances sprinkled throughout the show, which is what I think they should've went for with the trixies. I get the feeling the issue of the plot stopping just to watch magic squirrel mating in episode one was an issue with the writing team for this episode specifically, because the fantasy animals in other episodes don't have the "stop the story flow in its tracks to focus way too much on unimportant animal thing" issue. Nothing like that happens with frog goats. The cave crabs get a short scene establishing how friendly they are, which becomes more important in retrospect since they start acting off later. The episode doesn't feed us pointless stuff about the crabs like: "this is how they make babies", " This is how they raise their young", etc.

When it comes to LGBT media, one of my favorite examples is a game called Heartbeat. About 80% of the cast are gay or bi, but they don't dwell much on it. It's treated about as casual as any other relationship. It's basically "This is my wife" "Cool." And all characters have more to them than just being gay. HGS also shows why I dislike many forms of LGBT Representation in media; they just exist and the creators believe that should be enough. Japan has tons of LGBT characters in their media, but they have more to them than just their sexuality or gender identity. And more importantly, the overall plot doesn't suffer. Street Fighter, Dragon Maid, Yuri on Ice, Zombieland Saga, Sailor Moon (reminder this was back in the 90s), Super Mario Bros./Paper Mario (referring to Birdo and Vivian), NieR & NieR: Automata, BlazBlue, Pokemon (there's a spinoff manga that has a trans character), an argument can be made for Higurashi, Senran Kagura, and Hyperdimension Neptunia.

High Guardian Spice makes me embarrassed about being a trans man. No more is needed to be said. Edit: Actually nevermind I will be going into it. That one scene where the trans masc professor (Idc enough to remember his name) basically EXPLAINS LIKE A WIKI PAGE about being trans, the in-world replacements for hormones and all that jazz feels super uncomfortable. Like, nobody would ever be that open about such things unless they are close friends of theirs and he was talking to a STUDENT about it. It felt really off, robotic, and made me uncomfortable. I never even watched the full show, but my friend showed me that scene and a few other ones, and I just felt unnerved. It just felt more like he was used as a walking sign that says "LOOK AT ME! I AM A TRANS MAN! LET ME GIVE YOU AN ENTIRE EXPLANATION OF WHAT THAT MEANS AND WHAT IT IS LIKE!" Instead of a character. If you are watching the show for the LGBTQ+, which if you actually were watching it seriously and not to rag on it you probably are, chances are you wouldn't need an explanation on what being transgender means. I also gives a bad portrayal of transgender people, making it seem like that transgendered individuals make their identities their lives (which, on the internet it might already seem that way, making the show's representation of them worse. On the internet most people do not post their entire lives. Just because someone talks about their gender identity a lot online doesn't mean that they make it their whole life. They might just be proud to finally come out or want a place ro vent because they are not accepted at home). I like the idea behind the character, but it could be executes better. I also dislike the fact that he is the only male identifying character that, as far as I know, isn't depicted as a villain. All of the cis men in the show, besides the few who act more feminine, are depicted as villains or as mean people. The women and transgendered individuals are depicted as good. It gives off the vibe that they are trying to feminize transgender men, which there are trans men who like to be more feminine in their style or presentation (and I think I heard that the professor might be like that? Idk as I said I never actually watched it. Actually, it might be the ginger kid I am thinking about.) but it has been an issue where many people try to present trans men in general as being more feminine when it isn't true. I have also heard that some radical feminist groups include trans men as a group that needs to be 'protected', but not trans women because of the fact that trans men were born female. They still treat them as women despite the fact they aren't, and disregard trans women, seeing thwm as a 'threat to real women'. Again, I only heard that, but I have heard some of the stuff going on about the creators of this show and I wouldn't be surprised if that is what is happening. From what I heard they have a whole 'hate all men' thing going on... Which makes the portrayal of the only trans man in the show being the only good male character that much more of a red flag when it comes to feminizing trans masc people. I don't really like radical feminist groups so I don't really care enough to learn about them unless it could be affecting me or if my mom is ranting about how much she hates something they did.

@@funnylittlecreature In most cases the addition of LGBT characters is fine, but sometimes LGBT characters are added where it contradicts the world building or something else. A prime example being DC adding trans amazons. The amazons would kill or abandon male children, so for them to raise boys who then identify as women, or consider all their babies to be women even if they evidently have male biology is literally just ignoring sex, in which case there'd be no reason for them to hate men so much. It completely ignores the beliefs of the amazons in order to pander to trans people. As for the meaning of the word "woke", the definitions of words change all the time, like how "gay" used to mean happy, but now refers to homosexuality. I'd consider people who simply call anything with LGBT characters in it woke to not be using the word properly.

The WEBTOON strawberry seafoam is high guardian spice done right we got similar tropes main character has pink hair and a mom that mysteriously vanished and later gets a weapon from missing mom characters best friend who has a lot of pressure put on her by parents and one of the characters is even named sage it also has some pretty good LGBTQ representation I really don’t want to spoil anything all I’m going to say is magical girl mermaids and one is a guy just please read it if you want to see something similar to high guardian spice but done right

The show suffers from cishet man bad syndrome. My go to example for this is always Snapdragon. Honestly i would’ve been fine if they had another trans character in the show if it weren’t for the fact that they essentially imply if you’re not an cartoonishly evil mustache twirling man, you’re a girl. Like its just impossible for men to be nice or emotional or have deep friendships with other men. (Also exempting trans men from this because… what, trans men are trans? it doesn’t sit right with me, it’s like they’re implying trans men aren’t actually men, they’re just trans men.)
@AlphishCreature2 жыл бұрын
Transmen are exempt from the "cis" part of "cishet man bad" syndrome, I guess? I think the problem doesn't lie in Snapdragon being trans in and of itself, but Snapdragon's arc ending up in a show where Snapdragon being trans invalidates the primary source of positive male representation. Though even if we ignore prof. Caraway there's still Parnelle (yes, he's male) and Slime Boy, so I seriously doubt all the writers went out of their way to portray all cishet man as bad. Heck, episode 5 proves Sage wrong on the "guys don't talk about feelings" front and Sage is right there; interestingly, it's the only episode from the first season half not written nor co-written by Kate Leth. With feminine guys' and transwomen's journey both having an abysmally scarce representation in animated media - "journey" meaning a character arc dedicated to gender non-conforming/transness, not just such characters existing in a show - any of "Snapdragon as a feminine guy" and "Snapdragon as a transwoman" arcs would add to the much needed representation. It's just unfortunate that this arc ended up in the mess HGS turned out to be.

HGS main problem, from what I've seen and heard, is that it really just lacks the technique of "Show don't Tell". With Arcane, thanks to both the great writing, dialogue, animation, and VA deliveries; it you can clearly see these things from visual queues, context, and body language. HGS has absolutely no restraint, or confidence in their own ability to do "Show don't Tell", so the writers just tell the audience the most obvious things, anyone with a working brain could pick up on by putting two-and-two together.

I think it is a poor way to use gender identity and themes. They could have done so much but instead, it was like this, "Hello herb and herb, I am a woman and this is my wife. Let me tell you what this means in a lengthy explanation that ends up leading nowhere and makes you question why I brought it up in the first place." like what the heck. If you aren't going to do anything with it, just subtly show that that theme is present, or show us how this has affected their lives and how someone in a similar predicament could survive in a world that seems to currently be against them. You should either use these themes to help communicate with someone who can relate or just say like oh this person is gay and then move on without any time wasted and have it be done in a place that contextually makes sense in the story. Like if a person had to work extra hard to let trans people be in office or something so it shows how much they have worked to get into that position of power. You could have the characters ask why they originally weren't in that position and they could explain the hardships they have faced in an industry that did not previously accept people in their position. I am not as educated on these types of topics, but purely from a character-building standpoint, I believe it would improve my opinions of the characters substantially.

Honestly, when I first heard the title "High Guardian Spice," I think of a clan of tiny gnome-pixie hybrids named after spices, herbs, and extracts; that help those who are bad chefs cook better or those who have no idea what to fix. Sort of like a combination of The Smurfs, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Cinnamoroll, and Sugar Bunnies.

Believe it or not, I actually watched the show hoping for a "so bad, it's good" watch. Unfortunately, I walked away disappointed. There WAS some potential there & the thoughts that kept going through my head were "this could have worked," "they should've explored that conflict more," & "they REALLY need to stop rushing through these plot points!" Do you have any idea how FRUSTRATING or even MADDENING it is to keep having those thoughts going through your head? I tried leaving constructive criticism on Crunchyroll for the creators on the off chance that they MIGHT see it. My #1 recommendation was to SLOW DOWN & give their plot points more room to BREATHE! The whole show seemed like a rush job to me & I later got confirmation on the Mother's Basement channel (in his response to one of my comments that is) that it REALLY WAS! The creators should've been allowed to work on it more too since Crunchyroll held onto this show for a LONG time before they finally released it! I'm not denying that it's bad, but I'm not angry about it. I'm just disappointed.

This show is just embarrassing. While I don’t think it’s the worst thing ever, the show is just so low quality that you question how it still came out in the state that it did after all of these years. Bland animation that’s poorly done, bad writing and unnatural dialogue, awful pacing, terrible audio mixing and weak voice performances, and it tries way too hard to have its cast come across as ‘diverse’ and pro LGBT rather than create a good show. It’s not even bad in the funny way, it’s just sad to look at. XP

Ok. I've seen this in a few vids about HGS. (Let me preface that I don't like HGS and i'm mostly playing devil's advocate) but . . . is everyone taking the "cousins" line as incest? I mean when it comes to my cousins and their spouses we just say cousins plural since they are married. If they are dating its another story, but once you married in you are a part of the family and become a "cousin". Is that not normal? No, none of my family members, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, are related in any way to their spouses.

I agree this show isn't good, but at least the creators did their own thing and created their universe, so they didn't undermine anything we loved before. Bland as that universe and the story in it may be, this is so much better than all those recent cartoons which take a piss on previously established characters and canon (like say, Thundercats roar or Netflix masters of the universe)
@lazycat8362 жыл бұрын
I think this is "anime-inspired" cartoon at most. This has nothing related to anime. It isn't made by japanese artists/studio. Assuming it is anime is like assuming Ex-Arm has good animation :v I think it's because Funimation recently bought Crunchyroll so they decided to release this like a giant middle finger to everyone before bailing out

Personally, I think a huge problem is the fact that the first episode bee lines it's way to introducing all of the central cast. I personally believe that can be a major detractor if handled poorly. For a point of comparison, One Piece slowly introduces the core Straw Hats throughout East Blue with their own respective arcs, or in the case of Nami two arcs.

The useless, silent scenes that do nothing to the plot reminds me of studio ghibli's strategy to drown the viewers into the world they created, like in spirited away where haku ask chihiro to meet him at the bridge, they don't just skip and go straight to the bridge, they decided to animate chihiro's way from the boiler room, the stairs, and finally the bridge, so that the world feels more real. and i like that types of scene, that's one of the reason i love studio ghibli movies. But the problem with HGS is that its executed *BADLY* , and the art do nothing to drown us into the story. I get it- they are trying to show all their world building and *stuff* , but there's something so different about the way ghibli executed the silent scenes and the way high guardian spice executed it that i couldn't actually pinpoint. The way they cut the line to the front to literally sit in the back of the train is just... useless. I prefer if they actually help the guy instead of just cutting the line as to show their characters and actually made them likable as the protagonists. Crunchyroll probably think that if they made them cut the lines it would make them 'relatable' to the audience, and its simply not. They choose the bad choice to show them right before they go to Lyngarth, and not showing any of their characters. There's usually two things that i watch, a show that focus on the plot and a show that focus on their character development. And HGS are both, but again- they executed it badly. Characters were flat, story were flat, EVERYTHING WERE FLAT. it felt like they didn't even bother to put their effort into their so called first animation. Characters are generic, (of course elf has to be an archer cause huh, how could they be not an archer?!) and probably i hate this show so much because i'm not into magical girl shit, but i saw magical girl animes better than this! Hell, sailor moon is even better. I couldn't believe they wasted 3 years of their time to create a low and cheap animation.

It's a nothing burger story with all but two men both of which are atypical to say the least being terrible stereotypes. One is trans and the other is more on the femme side at a minimum, if not trans himself. The story could of been decent if the writing wasn't so terrible and the animation was pretty terrible as well except for like the last 3 episodes. Let us not forget they were to lazy to draw everything on the show properly even with all the time they had to do so. Or how it came to be to begin with, all the money meant to be go to japanese studios going to this crapshoot instead. Like a 3-4/10 being generous...
