Blame Pete and no one else. He lied forever, made excuses and blamed the commissioner and the investigator and the media for something that he did to himself. If it was a couple bets, no big deal, but this guy did this for years and thought there was no way they could do anything to him. What else do you expect the league to do at that point? The Hall of Fame is not controlled by Manfred and Selig. A permanent ban is, well, permanent.

It's funny that everyone defends this decision in this game, but no one ever brings up Rose crying about Garber pitching like it's the World Series in the game that ended his hitting streak.
@jotolo1840Ай бұрын
@@roland7584 The Braves were leading the Reds 16-4 so the normal MLB pro thing would be for Garber to throw strikes to get the game over, especially since Rose's historic hit streak was on the line. Instead, Garber wouldn't throw strikes and forced Rose to chase bad pitches.
@roland7584Ай бұрын
@@jotolo1840 First pitch was a strike and Pete tried to bunt it towards third. 2nd and 3rd pitches were typical Garber movement pitches inside with the 2nd one close to the plate for a ball and the 3rd one was way inside. Pitch 4 was a strike and pitch 5 was right on the outside corner of the plate as a typical pitch in that situation. Pete had his chances in that at bat and wasn't chasing anything.

Let me say this about Pete Rose. He should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame…NOW. Did he gamble on baseball, yes! Did he lie about it for 14 years, yes! Let’s put this into context for one minute. I’m not condoning when Pete did. Gambling, like alcoholism and drug addiction is a disease. It’s defined as the following. Gambling disorder is a chronic mental health condition that can affect many aspects of your life. It's a behavioral addiction that happens when you lose control over your gambling behaviors. Again, Pete made a major error in judgement and behavior when he gambled on baseball games that he was a part of as a manager. There are many baseball players in the Hall of Fame who were either alcoholics or drug addicts or PED users. Should we remove Mickey Mantle for being an alcoholic? Should we remove performance-enhancing drugs and other drug using baseball players like Tim Raines, Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez? The point is we all make mistakes and to deny these players contributions to the game is sad. They released John Hinckley Jr.. Geez, he shot Regan, wounded 3 others and they fully released him in 2021. All you writers and hierarchy running baseball aren't saints and i'm sure a lot of you have some skeletons in your closet. Get off your high moral horse. To error is human. To forgive is DeVine. Pete Rose was given a lifetime ban. He fulfilled that ban as he passed away today. His life is over now and he is gone. Let Charlie Hustle in. He paid for 35 years for his crimes and it’s time to let him rest in Baseball Heaven in peace. R.I.P. Peter Edward Rose. No one ever or will ever play the game like you did.

MLB decided it would sacrifice Pete to send a message to it's players and coaches. Anyone with a stat sheet could make the same determinations as Pete, about starting pitching and whether or not to bet on the Reds that day.
@roland7584Ай бұрын
They didn't sacrifice Pete. They tried to make a deal with him before they even started the investigation. They were even going to work with the government so they'd reduce the penalty for tax evasion. Pete played hard ball and lost, and then kept playing through the extra innings with his lies for years, and blaming it on everyone else but himself.
@SleazyDonnyАй бұрын
He bet on games involving his own team as a player and a coach. He crossed the line. He then lied about it for years, never took responsibility, and overall behaved in a scummy manner. His on-field record is superb, but the Hall of Fame was well within its right to exclude him from the Hall, notwithstanding any hypocrisy.

I'd start with looking at the Babe's partying life and looking for possible interactions he had with females under age 16. Just a hunch. On a team Rose helped assembled, coached and mentored. Sometimes it takes "one more season" for a team to come together and win a championship. You know, like the Big Red Machine taking a several years to get over the hump. In Petes first 4 seasons as a mgr, the Reds finished 2nd each year. Today that would be 4 straight playoff appearances. The 5th and final, not so good, and everybody knew what was coming. As for Sweet Lou, we all know he was a great mgr, much better than Pete, hell, much better than 95% of all mgrs who ever managed. So that is not as big a knock against Pete as you may think.
@bnegs521Ай бұрын
@jamie49868 it is a big knock when Rose misused the bullpen on games he bet on and Rose was often distracted due to his gambling addiction and the domestic and other problems he had a result of his gambling addiction. Rose was not the GM and did not assemble the team. In fact many in the organization felt Rose was in fact holding the team back and the reason why they were finishing 2nd and not 1st. And you know what? They were proven to be CORRECT! The Reds were WORLD CHAMPS as soon as Rose was relieved of his duties.
