Another vote for the strength and flexibility videos. I learned the hard way how different it is throwing kicks against resistance trying some the tricking style kicks on a heavy bag. I've been trying to get my lead hook kick up to par with my rear leg hook kick. Also working on developing the fluidity and whipping/snappiness you've covered in recent videos. Keep up the great work!

Another big bang of informations..thank you for this treasure of knowledge grant .. Definitely would love to see the strength and flexibility vids too. ..personally one issue that i can't avoid regularly for some reason is that even when i deliver a side oundhouse kick nice and good The "rechambe" never happens correctly...my leg just drives my whole body toward the kicking direction and i end up needing to do a 360 twist with my whole body to be back at my starting point...
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
I suspect this because your center of gravity isn't right over your standing leg, hence the lack of control. You want to get it so you can still assert force forwards, but in a manner where it doesn't take you off balance after you've done that

On the topic of flexibility, static flexibility for kicking is incredibly overrated and I am glad you are pointing this out, i was able to do the splits no problem in my younger years but as I got older my static flexibility declined but i was still very capable of performing my high kicks with power and precision, which caused me to draw the conclusion that yes you need flexibility, but more dynamic flexibility then anything, mixed with technique, alignment, and posture, I have known so many people who are insanely flexible but have very weak kicking abilities, no snap, no speed or power, they are like spaghetti noodles flinging around all floppy
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more with the spaghetti noodle kicks lmao! I mention something about this in my new video actually. And YES! Dynamic flexibility is far more important, mixed with those other things. It's quite rare to find someone with that level of understanding actually. Kudos for that!

Thank You Grant. It's always a good day for me when You upload a new video. If I may ask, I would like to ask You three things. Do You follow a special routine for your abs? I imagine that for a striker is really important to have that area strong. Another question I have is, I do shadowboxing with some frecuency but I ended up getting horrible headaches. Is that normal? And lastly, what do You think about isometrics to develop strenght? Thank You very much. Love your videos!
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
I don't do anything for abs other than striking (which uses the whole core), and aside to that I just do those types of exercises I demonstrated in the stamina video I recently uploaded, they are full body exercises but utilise a lot of core in order to hold the body in an integral position for the movements, so you could say it's incidental training. If I were to do some, I would do gymnastic hollow body training. I'm not sure about the headaches man, are you ensuring you're hydrated and breathing properly? Remain relaxed always! It depends, what type of strength you're wishing to develop in that. For things like grip strength, then yes. But, if it's punching power specifically, it may do but there are better methods in my opinion.

I really enjoyed watching this video mate. I do have a question. Not trained properly in 5/6 years since eldest daughter has been born. What would you say is the safest way to re-introduce dynamic flexibility, tension hold kicks, speed/power for us elder gens. Also what frequency per week is best to train initially to see improvements
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
Hey Richard, it's been time! I think it would be to begin training in a really relaxed manner. All you really need is dynamic flexibility and general mobility. Just ensure before training the techniques you've done quite a bit of dynamic stretching (leg swings) and are relatively at your full range motion. Because you have prior experience then that muscle memory will still exist. If you want to see progression fast, I would suggest just doing a little each day and not pushing too hard. Don't view it as a workout, but skill acquisition. Consistency will take you way further than big heavy sessions every now and then. Also can you do a video on pressure on the knee when kicking .. it might be pivot related. But i think maybe flexibility and torque on the knee . But i feel that even in some stretches. Also i can chamber my knee waist level but still have a low kick!! Thanks. I know there is a lot here
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
I haven't experienced what you're talking about regarding the knee, but I suspect it's because there's too much resistance/friction between your pivoting foot and the floor which is causing pressure on the knee. Work on that hop pivot I talk about in here so there's no resistance. In terms of the chamber/kicking height. If you wait too long in the chamber before getting the kick done, it doesn't make a difference because the energy has been lost. You need to create a stable structure in your body for the energy to flow into, but it also has to happen in time as well, or it will not work - Practice and be persistent! 💪

You have any thoughts on other roundhouse techniques like muay thai, or hapkido? I always thought the taekwondo roundhouse was the best because of it's speed and more linear appearance from head on, making it less telegraphed, but the more baseball bat muay thai style of kicking seem to be heavily favoured in MMA.
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
Yeah man! I have thought about this a lot. I don't see my kicking style as strictly TKD, I see it as a blend of TKD and MT. It's a little different. I believe it's favoured in MMA, mainly because it's an easier entry point for people to learn. It's less technical and therefore more immediately applicable for beginners. This is especially the case as in MMA there are so many disciplines to learn and so time allocation is also a factor. I think MT probably gives more bang for buck initially as there's less development time needed.

@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 11 ай бұрын
I never actually did cheat 9 in a really turned over position, because it can knock off the alignment of the spin. If you watch most people really good at cheat 9, they tend to have their hips at about a 45 degree angle in between classic crescent kicking position, and fully turned over.

No high kicks...liver kick or heart piercing kick or knee groin .. jump up on a tree ,grab that bark,holding ..squeezing,very effective.
