I have allowed a player to do this, but I have ruled that once the Similacrum is no longer within the limit of the spell, it is now free to live its own life, and is an NPC. It may be similar to the original copy, but I had an extended discussion with a character, he thought his freed Similacrum would happily and willingly sacrifice itself for the parties interests. I told him why would his copy do a sacrifice like that when you clearly would not? That forced him to think for a while and evaluate the risks of freeing rough copies of himself that he does not have direct control over.

The recent Wizard subclass video has opened my eyes to how cool the Enchantment school is. Now I want to play an Enchanter that protects his tower with several layers of security, but as a last resort, Glyph of Warding (spell glyph) set with Dominate Person level 6, the trespasser takes a ten minute walk to another Glyph of Warding (spell glyph) set with Modify Memory level 6. Viola! The trespasser has no memory of where the entrance to the tower was... or the entire previous week... Now I'm going to come up with the most convoluted, chain reaction, Rube Goldberg Machine Contingency spell I can.

@@jeffersonrose9888 but I’m saying because you can only actually affect 10 minutes they would still remember the rest of the week. You could have them remember the entrance being somewhere else but that would have been in the last ten minutes so there would be no reason to upcast

In regards to Monty's concern about the balancing of combat encounters and the social dynamics therein, I think my preferred use of the *Simulacrum* spell would be to have it stay behind in the wizard's study, researching spells, creating scrolls or magic items, doing chores, keeping your home base in good shape for when you return. If anything goes down that shouldn't, like an intruder in the base or an attack on the town, then *Sending* could be a way for your simulacrum to let you know right away. Rubies don't exactly grow on trees, so I'd be hesitant to take my simulacrum anywhere dangerous when it can be so much more useful doing downtime activites for the party.

One thing to note about the clone, is that you can decide the age of the clone. So a wizards that is too old to adventure can make a new younger version of themselves and destroy their enemies with a suicide run. Then just wake up and go dance on the ashes of their enemies :)

@@recursiveslacker7730 Maybe.. Up to you really, when your running the game. The way I see it, a lich is harder to kill permanently, because the clone needs a third of a year to grow. Homunculus seems more useful as a creature you'd leave behind in your tower while you're out adventuring. If you have some project that doesn't need your spellcasting that is time consuming, leave it there to do it. Leave it there to guard your tower and immediately warn you if anything's gone wrong. Leave it with important NPCs to assist or watch over them. You basically have unlimited Sending to it, and since it can magically convey everything it senses, the wizard could read books through the Homunculus from super far away. This would allow a wizard on an adventure to do research through the Homunculus while out adventuring.

I actually had this idea for a genie warlock. Basically he starts as a tomb raider type character, finds a tome (pact of the tome) that contains the wish spell and a genie appears and says "damn, that was supposed to be protected, wanna help me protect it in exchange for power?" And he said hell yes. Story happens, he becomes a lot less selfish and decides to actually protect the tome...then he gets wish...a few years later, mighty fortress surrounded by plant growth and awakenned trees, hidden underground maze full of elementals, undead and constructs, guards and wards everywhere, glyphs full of all kinds of fire storms, feebleminds, prismatic walls, reverse gravities and after all of that and a whole lot more there is a sealed sarcophagus with a clone in it. Once the warlock dies, he will awaken within it, summon his tome and wish for an eternal sleep from the genie that granted him the power to become a good person.

You guys should definitely give Tiny Servant a look as another contender with familiar. For the campaign I'm in, we've had a little lantern TS basically serve as recurring character that does really crazy shit. My favorite moment with it will probably always be when a Sea Dragon was attacking a village fishing fleet. The dragon had gotten away from us and was head running full speed towards the helpless fishing vessels. In a last desperate attempt to stop the creature, my wizard ordered his Familiar to pick up the Tint Servant and fly after the Sea Dragon. When they finally reached the creature, the familiar dropped the Tiny Servant SAS style onto the Sea Dragon and began pummeling the crap out of it. With the familiar zapping it with a Dragon's Breath spell and the lantern round-house-kicking it, bought us time to catch up and save the day!!

Awesome video guys! I really hope when you get on to the Chronurgist in your next subclass video you cover the synergy of some of these spells, especally with the level 14 Convergent Futures feature: Just a few off the top of my head: Create Homunculus - Have your Homunculus cast and concentrate on a spell for you using Arcane Abeyance. Simulacrum - Both you and your simulacrum can cause an opponent to auto fail a saving throw with Convergent Futures. That means that by the time your second turn comes around, even creatures with legendary resistance are going to automatically fail their save against your big spell. Speaking of... Planar binding - Convergent Futures means you can cause the target to automatically fail its save. Using this with Wish and the tactic above means you can bind say Orcus to obey you and use his summoning powers to create a limitless army of undead including liches that obey you by proxy. Your move necromancers.

It gets especially interesting when your wizard manages to get access to these spells earlier in the game via a scroll. It's a really great, non-game-breaking way to give that player a chance to feel powerful by "bypassing" a tough challenge with a one-time use item (no material components either)

Time for simulacrum madness. As a level 17 wizard, spend the money to make a simulacrum of yourself. Now command copy 1 to cast wish, using it to cast simulacrum without the costly component to make copy 2. Copy 2 casts wish to make copy 3. Copy 3 casts wish to make copy 4. Copy 4 casts wish... 10 minutes after you finished the first copy, you have an army of 100 wizards with level 7 or lower spell slots. They go off to fight the armies of undead while you and the last copy continue making another 100 copies to help the first ones. 8 hours later, you've created 4,200 copies of yourself. That's a lot of fireball.

The other thing about the clone spell is not only can it be a backup life, but also the bit about being able to come back as a younger version of yourself. Imagine a BBEG who appears to society to be a wealthy philanthropic altruist who is the founder and main patron of an orphanage following a war, but truly in secret he is using it to select and train an army that has no loyalties or ties to anybody but himself. When the party finally find him out and confront him (leading to his death) and free the orphans not yet brainwashed - later he comes back as a poor child (still retaining his full knowledge and power) to engineer his revenge while hiding in plain sight - the party would have no reason to think this child is the same person that they had slain (as he would look considerably different). Similarly as a player, you could reasonably escape your bad reputation that follows you around for something you did (or did not do but were accused of) by having a younger clone. Then nobody would have reason to suspect that the youth they pass in the streets is the same person who was hung from the gallows last week. You essentially could create a new identity for yourself - revealing who you truly are only to your most trusted allies.

Campaign idea: you play as a party's worth of Clones after a failed excursion against the BBEG, but the Clone spell was weakened or otherwise defective so you start at lower levels, and the Wizard who cast it was otherwise incapacitated by the BBEG and did not rejoin the Clone-revived party (or is also highly nerfed). That effectively puts you into a "second playthrough" story of a campaign against a BBEG as heroes needing to not just forge a path ahead, but to do it where they'd done it once before and the BBEG is prepared and out for them (and possibly to rescue the lost Wizard and regain their lost powers and swag).

@Archimonde259 3 жыл бұрын
@@asherandai1000 The point of Meteor Swarm is that it doesn't take 1 minute to deal its damage. The two should not be compared. A more direct comparison could be something like Crown of Stars, which has comparable damage per bonus action to Illusory Dragon, with a lower level spell slot, without concentration, on a roll to hit instead of a saving throw. But then of course Illusory Dragon does a 60 foot cone AoE and has a fear effect stapled onto it while Crown of Stars hits a single target per turn
@asherandai1000
@asherandai1000 3 жыл бұрын
@@Archimonde259 Crown of Stars damage doesn't compare either. Even assuming a single target, Crown of stars average damage is only 182 assuming every single attack hits. At that level a high armour class is likely, I usually use 22 as a base for high CR single target encounters, as it could be higher or lower I think this is fair but feel free to use a different base. Assuming a maxed stat bonus gives +11 to hit, making for a 50% miss rate. That further reduces Crown of Stars damage to 91 over 7 turns. Illusory Dragon over 7 turns averages at 171.5 damage. Assuming every single save is successful reduces that to 85.75 damage. This is the "worst" case scenario for Illusory Dragon and it is almost equal, worst case scenario for CoS is 0 damage. It also doesn't factor in the 3 extra turns of damage, the AoE effect, or the other benefits it provides such as fear, providing a distraction target, or the fact you can remain hidden while ID attacks. I like CoS, but you can't honestly think it compares in any way. CoS loses out big in every respect except duration. I used Meteor Swarm because it's often seen by most as the pinnacle of spell damage, even though it actually isn't very good.

Fun idea: Cast *Simulacrum* with *Wish* for free, each simulacrum also casts *Simulacrum* with *Wish,* repeat until you have a small town's population of high level wizards to do your bidding. Have the last simulacrum created cast *Clone* on you with *Wish* just for good measure (unless you have a druid or cleric to cast *Regenerate* or have a *Ring of Regeneration*). That way, not only do you have a quick and cheap replica of Aeor, but you can have hundreds, if not thousands of identical spellcasters to protect your clone. At this point, liches are just liches because they're uncreative.

11:30 Regarding "Create Homunculus vs. Find Familiar", although it's true it can't be cast as a Ritual (therefore, consuming a 6th level spell slot to recast it, if the homunculus dies) it doesn't take more time than casting Find Familiar: "The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes LONGER to cast than normal." (PHB 201, Rituals). So Find Familiar takes 70 min (as a ritual) vs. Create Homunculus = 60 min.

You know, I feel like it would've been nice to have Demiplane be one of those spells that you can make permanent if you cast it in the same place for 1 year. Players could use it as the entrance to an admittedly small, yet really cool secret base that could be kept secure through a host of other spells, while I could also see high-level wizard NPCs setting up a whole bunch of interconnected demiplanes to create a massive dungeon complex a la Critical Role's Happy Fun Ball of Tricks. Idk, maybe that'd be too powerful even for an 8th level spell, but at the same time, several adventures use much larger demiplanes as settings for their stories, so it'd be nice to have a way to set something like that up using an existing spell that players could potentially pick up.

Planar Binding Attitudes Planar Binding says, "A bound creature must follow your instructions to the best of its ability. The creature obeys the letter of your instructions, but IF THE CREAURE IS HOSTILE TO YOU, it strives to twist your words to achieve its own objectives." But, it also says, "If the creature was summoned or created by another spell, that spell's duration is extended to match the duration of this spell." (emphasis mine) Summon Fey, Summon Elemental, and Summon Fiend all say, "The creature is an ally to you and your companions." Given the way "hostile" and "ally" are used in D&D 5e rules, I think any Fey, elemental, or Fiend you summon and bind will be an ally for duration, never hostile, obeying commands in the spirit they're given and generally acting in the best interests of the summoner and their companions.

Giving your homunculus hit points reduces your maximum hitpoints. Necromancers are immune to having their max HP reduced. So a necromancer can give their homunculus half their hit points with no downsides. They could also serve as a sentry/security cam at your base, OR my favorite, they could maintain your library. You need to do research while you're out in the field? Awesome, you are psychically linked to a creature with hands and eyes in your library. Just drop every copper you have on world lore books.

Cast spells of protection and wards against scrying and teleportation on everywhere but a single foot of that demiplane. Only you know where that single foot is, so anyone but you would have an INCREDIBLY hard time infiltrating your pocket dimension. Your clones are now safe and you are effectively immortal, everything else in your realspace wizard tower and any contingencies and so on are just cherries on top.
