This video even though you posted it two years ago is right on time considering I can’t use my big 7’ umbrella fully raised up above the model because of low ceilings. This gave me some workarounds to consider now! I appreciate this!! I think MagMod makes an adapter that can hold two AD200s in a Bowens mount and that could save some space too now that I think about it.

Like others, I love Gavin's videos and explanations. Here is a very practical question that no one cares to answer. All the light setup I have seen so far has really good space, I really want to know the low ceiling - not a 10 ft low ceiling, for me and many others, the low ceiling I guess would be like 7ft ceilings (like my fully finished basement that previous owners built). Can AdoramaTV or Gavin create another video that specifically targets a 7ft ceiling and how to get awesome professional looking family portraits?
@EdwardKilner3 жыл бұрын
I did like all the photos, but the last group with the strip box were dramatic and I found them appealing. In thinking about this, it may be that I have a preference for single and dual sriplight setups. I am going to have to be more conscious of this in the future. Quite a lovely model as well.

Great video. I thought when you were setting up the reflector in the ceiling that you were going to clamp a light to a ceiling joist and shoot through a scrim, which also would have worked, as the ceiling tiles seemed to be missing above the reflector.

I like to use a Profoto shallow umbrella with a diffuser. That way I get the flash inside the umbrella and it reduces the height of the modifier to only about one foot. In other words you get the flash almost all the way up to the ceiling. Do not forget to cut off the middle pole of the umbrella where it sticks out.

I would recommend the AD400pro with the H400 extension head. It is more compact and allows you to change the battery without having to reset.. I typically clamp the four hundred pro with a super clamp to My light stand. I have both the 400 pros and the 300 pros. They're both a great option.

Thanks for this video, helpful for us with low ceilings in the studio!! I hope you do another one on this topic and show how you do set ups with 2 strobes. I’m still not sure where the best place is to bounce my strobe into the ceiling as a fill light from above (and if a bare bulb or with a reflector on it is better). Hope you’ll make a video about that mixed with a key light. Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

Great Video, Love Your Work! Is that backdrop something that's available to purchase?
@andrewgreig11973 жыл бұрын
There are more lessons from this video. Sophie is an outstanding model and obviously understands how light works on her body. So she wore a grey topand not a black top. A black top would show no shadows and Sophie would be photographically shapeless. So the lesson here is that if you have no shadows you don't have shape. Even though she put on a black blazer the shadows under her bust reveal her shape. Another lesson is the way in which she posed on the floor. She extended her body across the frame and so her legs and arms looked longer. Had she pointed them at the camera she would have been "foreshortened" and out of balance. At 8:43 her pose is stunning because everything is just working. No accident "she" is working that pose. There is a way to work with black clothing and that is to make sure that there is plenty of texture so that a series of small shadows can reveal the shape.

Hey Gavin. I noticed when you placed the ad300 in the 42in octo you had the reflector still on. Wouldnt you get better coverage with the reflector off and going bare bulb? Thanks Gavin, My studio ceiling height is really 8', and I would need to replace the roof to get it any higher. So I've learned to do many similar things to achieve good shoots. You have now added a few that I didn't think about. My studio is all white, so my usual way of getting light from directly above is to point a soft box almost straight up from a low stand and bounce the light off the ceiling. That's one you didn't show.

There's also the tried and true bouncing off the ceiling. If the ceiling is low, make the ceiling your soft box. Can control the light spread if you want by changing the distance between the light and the ceiling. Or by using a snoot or barn doors.
