I have so much fun shooting this video and was a little shocked how good the new mode 2 is in High Res.

I have the S1r, I've been using it in Patagonia for the last 7 months. Obviously I can only shoot in HR mode when there's no wind and that's a challenge. Having said that, when it's still the results are really amazing. I use the Sigma 85mm ART DG-DN on the S1r as it's a super sharp lens. Sometimes I've done HR pano's. One thing though, from your testing how long would you say the S1r is taking to process the images. For me I find if I take a HR shot at 30th/second the camera takes about 20 seconds to process the image. Needless to say this is a bit too long to do panoramas because the light often changes between shots.

I would love to have a screen that can folds like that in portrait mode! I do not want a "fully" articulated selfie screen ... but like this one.

Thanks for sharing! One question: Are you able to comment on sharpness of the 24-105 across the zoom range towards the long end? Looked great wider in the video :) I shoot landscape and seem to use the 85mm focal length quite a bit. Would like to confirm sharpness before putting in an order for the S1R kit.

Thank you for the video and files! The video does not do the photo details justice. The tif files do look impressive. Could you try and take a studio portrait with it? Btw I saw some youtube video with a guy testing CAF for video and it actually looked pretty smooth and good (not noticing the distracting focus pulsing), as seen on my big UHD.Perhaps you can delve in the HLG modes more?

Thank you Darryl for testing this with a preproduction version. I was wondering how this compares to the Lumix G9? Would you say the HiRes algorithms have improved? I love my G9 and I am thinking about the S1 maybe the S1R. There is no doubt that the S1(R) will be better, the question is how much ...
@DarrylCarey5 жыл бұрын
My G9 is very good in High Res mode, but the S1 and S1R are on a different level, much sharper and more detail. Plus the Mode 2 in High Res is very handy when you have moving objects in the video.
@thephotochroma5 жыл бұрын
@@DarrylCarey Sounds very promising. Can't wait to get my hands on the S1(R). Will also be interesting to see if some of the features and maybe the updated menu system will come with a firmware update for the G9. Would be a nice surprise.
@baihu4u5 жыл бұрын
@@thephotochroma I agree. 1 more firmware upgrade on the G9 would be awesome. To have at least Hi Rez mode 2 added would be superb and still not threaten the S1s at all however I doubt that we'll see any extra icing on our G9 cake at this point. It's all about the S1, going forward I think. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

I’m curious if you got any wind of a desktop app that could build the 187MP shots. With xqd, the s1r could just write out the 8 shifted shots (327MB) and allow me to shoot more. As a landscape photographer, sunsets and sunrises fade fast and I want to maximize my shooting. I also shoot gigapixel photos with a pixplorer. Typical end result photo stitches are built with 100+ images. That’s 17 minutes of standing around in the field -per scene-- that could be done later while I get a cup of coffee back home. Right?

Hi Darryl, Really appreciate the video & a chance to take a look at the new mirrorless camera options that are now emerging in the market place. As principally a landscape photographer I would greatly appreciate an in depth review of the Focus Bracketing drive mode on the S1R. It looks very similar to the Nikon Z7 "Focus Shift" mode.
@BobAndersson5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! But I'm left wondering if f/8 is wide enough for high-res mode on the S1R. If the sensor had a native 187 MP resolution the pixel pitch would be about 2.15μm which would indicate shooting at f/5.6 or even f/4. The shots certainly show improved resolution at f/8 but might it get even better at f/4?
@DarrylCarey5 жыл бұрын
Not sure, as the sensor is native 47mp, and I know the sensors moves while taking the photos in HR mode. Maybe that could be another video - Getting the sharpest image in HR mode :)
@BobAndersson5 жыл бұрын
Experiment trumps theory every time. ;) But if getting more resolution from an optical system was just a matter of taking multiple images with sub-pixel offsets then the astro community would’ve been doing it for years rather than building bigger telescopes. If you have the time it would be an interesting experiment, one that unfortunately I can’t do here because I don’t yet own a camera with HR capability. But thanks again for those Dropbox samples. With all the beta firmware caveats in mind they were impressive and I’m warming to the camera despite all the buttons. :)

@Globetrotter-15 жыл бұрын
I must say that I was quite disappointed after downloading the files and viewing the images at 100%. Each one looked quite soft. The heavily underexposed 07 shot looked nice once I'd corrected exposure, but even addition of sharpening tool didn't help much. Obviously there are some leaves moving due to wind in the upper section, but the protected lower section of rock face does have sharper leaves. So I concentrated on the rocks themselves, and although the 07 image looks the sharpest of your selection, I wasn't overly impressed. The 01 image is only 133MB, so I think that is a straight shot and not a stacked image? Even that photo was very soft, so I imagine that in all the tripod landscape images, wind caused micro-shake throughout the shots. Did you use a self-timer, delayed shutter or remote to fire the camera? The 011 image I found even worse, and the amount of motion "blur" was quite bad throughout the image, with un-sharp buildings and lights, plus a soft affect to all the boats (yes I understand this was the handheld one). I actually work mainly in Tiff, and shoot Tiff 8-bit files in-camera with my Nikon bodies or convert raw files to 16--bit Tiff. Nikon 36 MP files as a 105MB in-camera shot Tiff, or 250MB converted Raw Tiff looks incredible, with bitingly sharp detail... so I was hoping to see even better images from the S1R. I think that subject movement and tripod-camera micro-shake in the landscapes is probably the main reason for the softness and not the S1R or lens.

Why the files on dropbox are 47 and 11mp? Aren't they supposed to be 47 and 187mp?
@DarrylCarey5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simeon, after uploaded the images I found out my dropbox would not take all the files in full size as the 187mp images are over 1GB when converted, so I added them as 50% Tiff files.
@simeonkolev12315 жыл бұрын
@@DarrylCarey cool but now nobody can tell is there any difference in the detail. If they were 47mp TIFF files and one was as it is and one high rez down sampled to 47mp - it was going to be easy to spot the difference. How to compare 47mp to 11mp?
@ricardoduarte65895 жыл бұрын
I praise your intent to show to prospective buyers of the newest Panasonic mirrorless camera the actual performance of the S1R High Res mode with, unfortunately, a rather confusing dual side-by-side presentation altogether. You don't specify whether the 180mp frame is the left or right frame which leads one to guess. Guessing, again, is hard since (except for the last dual slide of a tower) both frames are not zoomed at the same apparent ratio: the left frame is Always shown blown up higher than the right one. The vídeo presentation, again, shows no clear diferences between the High Res mode and the standard one. Well, well, so much time and work spent for nihil results. You, Mr. Carey, looks like na absolute honest, well intended person as well as clearly an experienced photographer, thus making me feel so sorry for this floppy attempt. I will be most grateful if you could be kind enough to give it another try since your charisma is overhelming and I really enjoyed wathing your presenation.

Darryl Carey The two photos appeared to be at two different magnifications when you were showing them side by side. I’m not sure why that high resolution mode would magnify the image. At 100%, I would expect them to be the same size. Is there some explanation?
@PhotoVideoTechOz5 жыл бұрын
@@guyyowell8547 100% means showing you each pixel for a value on the display, so if the image is 4x the pixels then you get additional magnification when viewed at 100%. It doesn't change your angle of view though.
