I don't know the cam from personal experience but in theory it is the HiRes mode and most of all number 2. I also think such a sensor with such stabilisation is quite extraordinairy so for filming but also other things it is qute a feat. In the loner run the fact that Sigma is going to join with in all likelihood excellent lens IQ and very good prce performance ratio is another plus. And for the viability Panny, Sigma and Leica seems to be a good combination. Reassuring may be?One thing: I wonder what the maximum exposure is in Hires mode. On the G9 it is a meager 1 second. Also: I would think that Panasonic should immediately implement a HiRes mode 2 in the G9 via firmware too. It just makes it so much more usable or at least easier to deal with movment.Finally I wonder if very sliht movement is filtered out in HiRes mode 2 too. Like aurora or noctilucent clouds? I bet no one knows yet.

Thati svery limiting at least for me as a landscape shooter. Wonder why my Em1.2 does not have that restriction at all. I can shoot 60s exposures (times 8 = 480 seconds). Makes it possible to smooth out any movement I want to be smoothed out like clouds or the sea...

Curious what your thoughts are on this camera 4 years later. The pros have not changed, still a great sensor and class leading EVF. Of the negatives the price is now a little above 1k, lens lineup is pretty robust, and auto focus improved by numerous firmware updates. For those of us that can’t afford the latest and greatest gear these flagship cameras of a few years ago offer great value in my opinion. Thanks for all the excellent content!!

At last someone is making a mirrorless camera where ergonomics and usability takes precedence over size. 😊 Hardly any of the other current mirrorless cameras balance well with a full sized flash and a long lens. This looks like it will, and it's the same size and weight of the Canon 5D series which many people have sworn by for years. Too bad about the lacking video auto focus tracking. I really wish it were better. I have a GH3 and I'm tired of unreliable video autofocus. I hope this camera does well, and that the next generation will have video auto focus that's be on par with Sony or Canon or at least good enough to be relied on.

Had the Canon R5 for a year. Although a great camera, HATED IT , Not sure why? Came from the Sony 7R which took great pictures but VERY SLOW!!!!. I found the Lumix S1R for 1900 NEW!!! Love the weight NOtT an issue here. With the update 1.9 Autofocus for landscape no issue. Lenses I only wanted ONE the 24 to 105 is amazing . YES the battery is a little weak but I always carry extra. THE IMAGES OUT OF CAMERA ARE PHENOMENAL> So glad I bought it. Great video. THANK YOU

The auto focus is NOT slow, in fact all modern Lumix cameras have some of the fastest single point auto focus of any camera...ever. The single point auto focus in low light is actually very impressive on the S1 and extremely accurate. When talking about continuous auto focus in photo and video...yes Lumix lags behind the competition...BUT...NOT single point AF!

I use a Mamiya RB67 for my landscape photography camera. I seriously don't understand why people complain about how heavy digital full frame DSLRs or mirrorless cameras are. I can easily hike for hours with my RB and 2 lenses and two backs
@oneeyedphotographer
@oneeyedphotographer Жыл бұрын
Perhaps sixty years ago I could have too. There was (maybe still is) that mirrorless cameras are lighter than DSLRs. And the Lumix G series and Olympus mirrorless cameras are, but that's because they have small mounts and so smaller, lighter lenses. My OM-D E-M1x is NOT a tiny camera, but its lenses make a light system, and with hand-held high resolution 50 megapixels, it's often a better choice than this. Good AF, more computational features.

i'm old and learned on thrift store fold-out kodaks. i have an MA in photo-art since then and have used many cameras. that said, i always use manual focusing for any intensely visual images. i also have adapters, so i use my Leica-R and Hasselblad and Canon lenses of all focal lengths. i'm always told that there aren't enough lenses for L-Mount but that isn't so. I got the Lumix for its in-body stabilization and color, and it is sort-of lighter than my Canon 1D mk ii. i'm 77 and the Lumix helps me carry all day. to be sure, the lenses are still heavy, but they've most always been so. the Leica-R's are less heavy than, say, for the S Pro-50mm, but the S pro is a good solution for the beginner on the Lumix, but not better than the Leica-R 50mm 1.4 in its actuality -- how it looks as a finished image. Just say'n.

I have not had problems with battery life, BUT I never intended it to be my main camera. I use mine for landscape photography when I want to use my Canon TS-E lense, and when I want th high resolution mode. Mostly, I use Olympus cameras where AF is good, but battery life is even more chronic. For me, the big drawbacks are lack of GPS and lack of bulb timer. And high res mode places serious restrictions on exposure duration. I could live with combining images on my computer, I think it would be a good trade-off to reduce delays between shots, specially if I could combine timelapse with other features.

I like the 5 by 5 quick review idea! I do love the image quality of the camera. But the cost/size/weight puts it out of my league. I will continue to "lug" around the G9 with battery grip. I've seen comparisons of images side by side as the ISO increases between the G9 and S1, and there is a difference for sure. But certainly rather have a camera I take out with me every time I leave home, than leaving the camera at home.

So far I found its better than my leica SL in every way from IQ to video and especially on low light performance . You still be able to reducing lots of weights by using M mount glass or Leica apsc L mount . Still far cheaper than the 4 years old out of date tech , bad low light Leica SL . I’m waiting for Sigma lens coming out and hopefully I can see some good one like The sigma Art lens . Thanks for the good honest review .

Surely, nobody buys ths camera to use APS-C lenses. And, whatever lenses you use, they must have a barrel big enough for the L mount, in contrast with Fujifilm's X mount.

HiRes has mode 2. From what I have seen it is better than any real MF out there if you use that. I have an Em1.2 and use its Hires A LOT. Coupled it with the Sigma f1.4 and used it for noctilucnet clouds. The output is amazing and I will compare tonight with the D800e and the 70-200 f2.8 to see how well it is. But I already know it will be at least close if not better. 56 mm f1.4 is on par with the 45 mm and 42,5 mm f1.2 lenses IQ wise but costs a fraction (430 euro vs 1200-1400). If Simga does anything similar for the L-series it will be the moment I will use this cam for landscape I think. The Em1.2 gets plenty of use for portraits, sports etc where its much lower weight and smaller size are really setting it apart. For landscape on a tripod I do not mind the weight and size of the S1R as much...

@@photorectoby You should instead talk about some of the tradeoffs that you get in the heavier S-series bodies. Like durability, better heat dissipation (enabling 4K/60), and the substantially better in-body stabilization. Even with Panasonic's new, heavier lenses, you're getting features such as zero focus-breathing, instant pull-back clutch manual focusing, dial-able focus ring sensitivity, precise zoom distance and focus readouts, etc. While to get the small size of a Sony, heat-increasing functionality, handling, and overall durability are going to suffer.

I'm sorry because I know it's a nice camera and all, but that weight and size problem is really a no go for me. I want a mirrorless, portable and light body. The idea itself of a mirrorless in a DSLR body is just ridiculous and counterproductive. Let's hope that is not the way the market will take. Please Sony, don't fall into it. Just give us a little better grip (you're already on the right way) but keep your bodies light and unobtrusive. Anyway I'm really curious to see what the Sony A7S III will be like. It could put all this fancy new mirrorless world to shame.

Well you're in luck! Most of the competition only offer smaller and lighter camera bodies. I wish they would all offer offer both compact and full sized cameras like this one, so people had a choice. @Phil Jones65 Who is "we"? I do not want these rounded plastic cameras that looks like as a preschool kids class had made them from clay. I am not "we" but me like the ergonomics of the S1. Did you ever hold them in your Hand? I have large hands and the "boxy" camera fits them perfectly. Imagine Panasonic had made a 50mm 2.8 prime without good weathersealing and a flimsy AF- motor. which of course could be produced cheaper. All will whine …what a cheap slow plastic crap…

But I do like the 47MP in this higher version. I would be primarily be using this for stills. I was looking at Canon R. Was curious to know if anyone has tried this with the adapter to use Canon EF lens. I do like the current lenses from Canon. I do know that native lenses are best but was curious. Thanks

I see 1 ...or 2 cons....The focus, which I really dont know how worse it is. I never used a Panasonic. And price. Maybe a GFX 50s Fujifilm maybe a better option, or A7R3...But anyone who has had a A7R2 and how that system locks out when writing to memory, or have experienced how glitchy it can be...I have not read any place if Sony improved those areas with the Mark3, so i would surely not even think of the Sony when Fuli, and even Canon may soon all be at or over the 45mp max and into larger resolution, and this S1R is not far off. But, for a all around performer that doesn't skip a beat whatsoever, the latest in the 5D is still tough to beat for reaction performance. So, I am hoping that level from the Canon RP system, which I have yet to try...But if I need a new lens line, I may as well just go to Fuji.

I love the menu system and feature set of my 3 Panasonic MFT cameras. This camera seems to be just as good with that. But, the focus system is just not up to the level of other cameras in a full frame body. If they ever improve that I am ready to make the jump. If they stick with the contrast detection only Panasonic is doomed at full frame.

The Sony approach is very different. It doesn't provide more pixels in an image (which you get with fractional pixel shifts) but better ones. (You don't need to do de-mosaicing.) Don't know which is the better approach. I would have guessed the fractional pixel shift is better. However, doing the processing out of camera has its benefits. If the image moves, and even landscapes tend to have at least bits that do, you can eliminate some of the blur manually by combining with the original images. So I'm told.
@keithgoreham1463
@keithgoreham1463 5 жыл бұрын
Nope. Not true. The S1 "hires" mode does both de-Bayering AND increased resolution AND stores the result in a true RAW file. There is no color mosaic-ing in the final hires image unless the camera isn't locked down during the shot. Truly, it's the best of all worlds.

It seems that Panasonic is well and truly committed to DFD. Maybe they can tweak it to get it a little faster. But they are limited by the basic algorithm. Hope they can speed it up some, because the alternative of stealing pixels to do auto-focusing just seems wrong. The question is not if they can get up to the speed of competitors but if they can get it fast enough. Enough, that is, for sports and wildlife.
