Dude it is 1000x safer than when my pops used to do it remember him telling me what it was yeah you had a harness but the harness wasnt shiiiit lol they didnt have all the hooks for safety etc when it was time to move and time for you to get up someone would pull you up literally they had to make sure of course you were tied off they harness my dad wore only went around both thighs and crochal regions and around your lower back you'd step and swing now its safer than heck yeah dont get me wrong shit is crazy it was more like rappeling before my dad had used to clean the riverside casino and the others in Laughlin Nevada in a bucket seat and the standing rig the old school rigs were not safe had no extra safety it was you either do it and get it done without fear or you most likely gone fall just like roofing I've done some crazy ass shit being held upside down while placing in a i beam that weigh about 75lbs with a impact drill and a hand crank i had to unhook my harness because I was the smaller guy and i could barely fit in the whole an we were atleast 10 stories high with nothing to break my fall if i slipped they even played a joke on me letting me fall a little bit i laughed my ass off idk why but i guess between the adrenaline knowing the only thing going to stop you is Concrete 10 stories down or the fact that welp it's my time might as well laugh

My dad used to tell me the stories of then vs nowadays the bucket seat was a totally like a bucket it was like a plastic small seat only certain sized guys were made for them tbh my dad being only 5'6" 5'7" between 135-145lbs at the time was perfect for it looked like a white child swing that they tied off to a hoop ring so you could go side to side and also repel down if you dont know what a hoop ring was for the old rigs let's say those cheap key chains are hoop rings but they were made from steel and alot stronger the harness was a thigh sitting harness you could literally sit in the bucket if the bucket fell you'd be sitting in that same position as long as you didnt move much until either the worker that helped you back up either made it so you could repel down or pulled you up they were extremely unsafe due to them being mainly plastic or fiberglass with a light metal bracket under the seat that you'd literally tie the rope into a U and it was literally a child's swing without the bar then they added the bar with chain lock to the seat with a X harness not much better than the thigh harness but more comfortable the harness we use now is crazy will this was like 10 or 13 years ago when I used it idk if it has changed it look as if it did but your legs would go into each up to the inside of your thigh and crochal area wrapped around your stomach over your shoulders the hooked into the belt which is the harness I still own

Great video! Im doing high rise over in Montana and this helps a lot. The job im on this week has been more difficult than others because we are covering 3 panes wide with each drop and its quite a stretch for me to reach the far side of the panes to the left and right of me. I realized today i should probably try using a suction cup to more easily hold myself stable because the small slippery frames arent helping much. Wanted to ask you why you stick the suction cup to the window before you wet it, then reattach the suction cup after? What does that do exactly? We dont have the same suction cups as the one used in the video so maybe its different

Everyone will develop a system that works for them. Goal is to do everything the same at each floor for efficiency and decreasing each windows time. Suction cups work wet or dry. I first set cup dry as cup is available in hand before sleeve is and to get full pressure while reaching. Then cups gets removed or slid to wet under it and finally removed with last stroke of squeegee motion to close out. It takes time to develop. Thanks for your advice! Other than some rough weather my time on the ropes went a lot smoother today. I was using one of the completely silicone 4inch 4 finger suction cups and it helped immensely, I did pop of the window a few times unexpectedly and was wondering if the 2 cup you're using in your video holds better? The one I was using did not like having water on it and popped off most times I tried. I may have just been pulling to hard on one side of the suction cup because I I've noticed it I don't pull straight on them they tend to come off. Any advice is appreciated!

I'm currently deciding between a IWCA high-rise window washing safety course and a SPRAT course. Do you think most companies in toronto would hire someone with IWCA high-rise training?

I'm in the US so not sure but believe Canada has better , more strict views towards safety. Believ4 IRATA is their choice but miving In to SPRAT . I personally stray away from the IWCA as their view changes based on the money they can benefit from. Their board is made up from companies who don't primarily service windows or highrise but they make the choices for those who do.

We do not require a level 3 on sites and SPRAT doesn't require us for logging our hours to level up. Starting the SPRAT training is above and beyond what OSHA requires so we are good.

Rescue plan had nothing to do with a level 3 onsite. Our safety manager, me, develops and reviews self and assisted rescue quarterly after each employee completes initial certification. We also have as part of our Work at Heights Safety Plan have a R400 device whetr all employees, inside and outside crews are experienced in using for assisted rescue without being in a fall hazard zone. Requirements for level 3 is to "work under their supervision". Since OSHA supercedes SPRAT the level 3 "supervision" isn't required.

@@windowwarriorsforum9112 Got it. Not taking a shot at you I just find it interesting. It's such a grey area in my opinion. I'm IRATA 3 and Australian (living in the US now). I just find it really intriguing. Every job I've ever been on has required L3's to be in vicinity and for a 1 to be working with a 2. That being said, you're not getting a job on ropes in Australia without being IRATA certified. The US is just a different beast and I wonder if it'll ever raise it's standards/requirements or continue to dilute them.

Good discussion and shows how the US severely lacks in safety. Most rope access window cleaners don't even use certified anchors. Really bad here with compliance and even understanding compliance.

The pay is a few dollars per pane but the volume is greatly increased. For example, a 10 story building 2 windows wide is 20 windows that can be cleaned in 10 minutes. Figure, 3-4 drops per hour is about 60-80 wi dows per hour. Adds up , can't be cleaning 60-80 residential windows per hour. Make sense?

No license but safety standards do state employees must be trained by a qualified person for the work they perform and equipment being used. Most companies don't understand what the term qualified means. This training usually isn't provided by a person technically capable and not documented. We get guys certified for RDS and or SPRAT.

Can these chemicals for cleaning windows damage rope,if it gets wet from them all the time ?

Ropes do have a life and are required to be inspected and logs maintained. Standard soap and water won't have much effect on ropes but should be based on rope type and amount of contact. Our ropes are replaced every 2 years. We document initial service date and remove after 2 years. Exceptions are a fall, abrasions or contact with harsh chemicals, anything that will weaken the rope. A log of each rope shows the inspection date and length in service. There are ways to clean ropes also, refer to the manufacturer recommendations.

Dude you’re awesome but I noticed two things. 1. That’s a Petzl RIG not an ID as it doesn’t have the panic button and it doesn’t have auto lockout if you pull the handle too far on the RIG down you go 👌🏼2. You should always have a stopper knot on the end of your rope to prevent it abseiling out of your device during the drop. Cheers for the tips! I need to use my suction cup more often lol I use grip strength for most jobs.

I appreciate your comments. This is a 2019 Petzl ID. Does have the lockout when handle is pulled too far and has a grab inside which locks the rope if rope is entered backwards. Rig doesn't have the grab inside. Button was also eliminated on the 2019 upgrade. Employees will earn $20-$30 per hour on average locally. Many do get bonuses paid too. Customers typically are cleaned 2 times per year here.

You have to be careful using that metal edge protector when your ropes are approaching at an overhead angle like that, they could easily slide off it if you swing too far to the sides.

I think of it as my side of glass has the better job. My jobsite always changes, every day is washing windows but each job has unique challenges and I can work indoors or out. As far as the pay, I make a really good income. Even being an employee you should be paid well.
