I do like that bridge.....it looks to have some real age about it. I visited Gilfach with my pa and a friend several years ago now. My old man loved it, the red kites, small pearl bordered fritillaries, etc. So much so, he went back for another look a few years later. We had had a long drive down to Blorenge from Lancashire, looking for a very rare warbler and called in on the way back. All good memories. Good to hear up the upland restoration work too....we have the same going on in my local Pennines. ATB Mark, Chris

Hey there Chris, yeah it's 14th C although the original wooden structure was 13th. Interesting to hear of your trip to Gilfach with your dad. I know why he loved it. The Blorenge? Interesting choice! Did you find the Warbler? As for the restoration yeah it's good but what a job up your end to. Thanks Chris. All the best up there. Mark

Hi Mark. A bit late but all the very best for 2023. That was a cracker, you wouldn`t be out of place on Tv narrating wildlife programs pal. There is a little Pub in the center of York that is right down on The River bank and inside they have all these photo`s taken over the years when The River has flooded, they even have a depth gauge on the wall and to see what the River has done over the years is incredible. I think I told you that my Dad was a Merchant seamen during The War. He said you have to witness the power of Water to fully appreciate it, it can be frightening, you have to respect it. Hope all is good with you mate. Water is a bit of a sore point with me at the min, all the pipes froze during the cold spell a few weeks ago and they burst when they thawed, nightmare but all sorted now. Take care mate, looking forward to the next one 😊

Getting on and trying to overcome my injury and get back out - getting there. Sorry to hear of the pipe. That's a bugger - gotta put lagging on them. I will take care - you to. Mark

Fascinating video, and a quite the little masterpiece. I did a trip up and down the Severn this week to photograph the flooding, Bewdley, Stourport and down to Worcester, I shared some of the same thoughts as you, knowing where it comes from. Thanks for sharing the knowledge and was interesting to hear the ideas for future management. I wonder what it was like before humans got involved at all. I often think this when looking at those treeless Welsh hills and mountains. Unsure if it’s felling or the rocky ground or something else, the high winds. Fascinating to think about. And I wish outdoors YT in general had more of this type of video. Thanks

Very nice Mark! The power of water is incredible! I was trained to operate 13 hydroelectric dams when the regular operator went on vacation or was sick, it was a wonderful experience. It see the breakup in spring with huge ice chunks coming into the intake racks and upending, the sound and smells of that earthy water is still with me. Our watershed starts southwest of Lake Superior and flows into Lake Michigan. When operating the Ford Dam I could see Henry Ford and Thomas Edison walking around the generators talking about the industrial revolution, these guys changed the world. Sadly our answer to pollution is dilution and we use the water like a toilet. Japan is going to dump all the nuclear waste into the ocean this year, it is enough to make one cry! Take care, Ossie P.S. Very unseasonable weather for us, 34f and rain for 36 hours and now a cold front has moved in and they say tomorrow into Thursday 6 to 10 inches of snow, then another warm front! These are not the winter's of my childhood where it was all cold and snow.

Hi there Ossie, I agree water is one of the bosses. Your account of the dam is fascinating. What a position to hold especially when the ice flowed down and them industrialists walked about. Hi Mark, Thank you for painting a greater picture of what's really going on. I must confess, I mostly only think of a river's source, perhaps passing the only hill on its journey... But there is more than just a tint trickle that forms this body and force! I feel I've gained a better understanding of what's going on. As you say, there are plans to 'repair' the UK's moorland and peat bogs. Many more trees are needed, on an island slowly consumed by brick, tile and concrete. All the very best to you and thanks again.

Such picturesque scenery hey Mr J. Veins of the land, those rivers. It lifts me up to see those wild and wonderful mountains. Maybe one day humans will learn to look after our home??!! Interesting to hear and see where all the waters start then end up Mark , similarly I always view the places on my travels that feed down to the Eden in Carlisle which is the lowest point before running into the solway. A unique and interesting video. I’d take a guess that not many consider the sources when we watch the water. Some lovely footage too, and wonderful wide open boggy places. The Yorkshire dales is riddled with drainage channels too, so I was interested in your commentary. What a surge! Thanks Mark

Great video Mark. Trees and bog restoration will help but so will stopping building on the flood plain. Elgin in Scotland seem to have learned the hardware and although the flood plain remains built one there are no new builds and the river is managed better. They have had no severe floods since the last project was finished. Again great video showing where the water comers from.

We have built on the flood plains as well as increasing the speed of run off and restricted the area we left for the water to flow, how many times have we heard in recent years that the weather we had was a once in a 100 or 500 year event, well I suppose we better brace ourselves for the next 500 or 1000 year event. You got to love our varied weather. ATB

What a beautiful film, Mark... Getting a deeper understanding of the world around us, if only a bit more than, waver thin, is a good thing. The situation here is much the same. Many things need to be done and changed. But forces of economics, ignorance, tradition and stupidity are against a more sustainable way of dealing with our ... yeah, let's just say it: our little spaceship called earth.

@@WyeExplorer ego, masculinity, false prophets, false hopes and beliefs... odd philosophies.. ..no historical awareness. no understanding of basic ecology. I once calculated the size of the biosphere. All things living and the oceans and air, fit in a box of 800km square. If you put that box on the globe and zoom out a bit, it is frighting small. meanwhile, we try and have a respectful good time. It is kinda hard to cope with in the head sometimes though. Watching a river flow as it did and will for thousands of years helps.

Great perspective of Mid Wales. In my mind the map is made up of roads and places. Now it includes valleys and hills. I recognised the River Ithon from it description but I never new its name. I know its route as the A483. As a brummie the only tributary I could name is the Afon Elan. The Elan valley supplies a great deal of Birminghams water.

Ho Adam, Thanks - glad you found it informative. Good question. Hi Mark, Sorry to hear about the flooding risk there in Hereford. Insteresting connection between deforestation, agriculture/human development and increased flow to the Wye. The Colorado plateau and Bear River near where I live definately suffer from some similar challenges. Does the Wye have dams along it's way to the ocean?
@WyeExplorer
@WyeExplorer Жыл бұрын
Hi Amos, thanks for your concern. Yeah, the City gets flooded bad in areas. I feel sorry for the property owners. As for deforestation people are re-wilding in the uplands and elsewhere. It's a big job but it can be done. I'm sure your rivers have similar challenges - in fact I've been watching the news out of the US. Some horrendous flooding. Apart from nr source with a gaging system the Wye is free of dams or weirs along its whole length - unique in the UK. All the best over there. Mark
