Your story is very inspiring and motivating. I am 31 years old, coming from a legal background and I have always been interested in Computers. However, my family thought it was suitable job for an Asian female so I had to lean towards a legal background. I am stuck in a job I hate and not happy. I decided that I am going to follow my true passion because 20 years the time, I don't want regrets, I want to say I tried to make it. What I liked about your video was the most, was you succeeded in your 30's and I kept having doubts because there is an impression that software developers are young male and anyone over 30 is too old. For the last 2 weeks, I have been making notes, guides, a self-taught plan, getting any useful videos that will help me in my journey. Just by doing this, I have learning as I go on. My goal is to do at least 9 months learning before applying for jobs. So first I will start of learning the basics, just some core fundamentals of CS, some data structure and algorithms (not much as people said it doesn't come into play but useful for interviews). I don't want to spend too much time on this. Once I have an understanding, I will move on to HTML, CSS and then JavaScript. Then move on to Frameworks, I am mainly looking at REACT and Node JS (Popular on job description in the UK). I think the first project I will do is build my portfolio and then making apps. I can spend months, just watching tutorial videos and in the end, they are not going to help me with my job or land a job if I can't think for myself or code. It’s going to be a hard, juggling family life, responsibility but in the end, I have faith in myself to achieve my goal. The only thing will be difficult is networking as not an outgoing person here so will look into different options for that. Anyway, I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching the rest of your videos.

So sorry for the late response. It seems like you have a solid plan set up on the path you're going to take for learning how to code. Don't let anyone stop you or discourage you from what you want to accomplish! A quote that's always stuck with me is "You know what the true definition of hell is? When you die you get to meet the person you could have been." Networking is really important and while I may seem like an outgoing individual, I'm actually very antisocial. I can tell you that after you attend your first meetup and you surround yourself with people who are where you want to be or are doing what you're trying to do, you will be very happy you did and going to your next meetup after that will be much easier. Thanks for watching and I'm glad my video helped, I wish you luck and I look forward to hearing about your progress!

I don't normally comment on videos. But the reason I am commenting and subscribing to your channel is because I'm 30 and I just started coding. I served in Iraq when I was 19 and then after the military, when i was 21, life just got really hard. Did 26 months in prison and just couldn't find my footing. Life changed for me when I was 26,the Lord saved me, and just recently I said "Devon you gotta do something." I'm studying to become a pastor but I needed a career. (I'm not one of those people who are going to live off of their congregation so I can show people the Biblical example of honest working for a living.) I decided to code because I always had an interest in computers and coding. Surprisingly I really really enjoy it. I literally can't wait to get to it everyday. I just got into a bootcamp, App Academy. I start on March 8th. So thanks! This was the encouragement that I was seeking for that this is the right route to take.

Jabril has a great channel and Andy Sterkowitz don't get me wrong. All the background information and the minimal prep / room setup just made it almost painfully uncomfortably real. There were no shortcuts in the story no reveals of clickbait hidden free passes like you knew a guy etc or really lucky breaks. That's very true at my first job most of the devs were in their early and mid 30s at my new job I'm one of the younger engineers and I'm 35, we have plenty of developers in their 40s and 50s.

I'm 57 and I'm a manual test analyst, so I've spent my time test front end website and backend systems, like API and databases, but the one thing I haven't tackle is automation testing, so I've taken up learning coding, I'm not saying it easy, but committing some time and it starting to make sense. Good to hear that you made it as a developer.

Great story man. Real glad you found a job after self-learning Programming. I took the traditional route, self-learned python for a few months then went to university for computer science. If I wasn't single and if university in my place costs like the US, I might've took the same route as you and just do full self-taught. I'm lucky though that university is affordable where I'm from so it made sense to go that route.

That is super inspirational man!! There's lots of people in a similar boat, when you've had a habit of low paying jobs(and that's what you feel your worth is), Not to mention programming is just straight up hard! It becomes difficult to change course. The saying "The chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too strong to be broken" comes to mind.

You're very welcome and thank you for watching. Quick story that may help you: On Friday I was being helped by a senior developer at work with a problem I was working on. I was stuck and felt a lot of imposter syndrome. After he helped me with my problem, I opened up and told him that I was struggling and felt that after 4 years I should know what I'm doing. This gentleman has a computer science degree and has been working as a developer for over 15 years. He proceeded to tell me about how much he struggled at his first job out of college and how it's completely normal for me to feel this way. He also told me that there were many things that he learned about programming at his first job that he wasn't taught in college AND he continues to learn new things regularly. Finally he explain to me that much of this is muscle memory and repetition and with enough time and practice things will make sense, no matter how difficult they may seem. I'm sharing this because this isn't the first time I've heard this, hell I often say this to many new developers and people who are interested in learning to code. Sometimes you need to hear things from people who have gone through what you're going through in order to related to them and feel encouraged to continue at moments that you feel like you're not good enough. Hope this helps you out and remember with enough time and dedication you can accomplish ANYTHING you put your mind to!

I dropped out of college as a Computer Science major to be a self taught Android Developer. I would do poorly on the exams, and programming was very foreign to me. I was SO CONFUSED. When i took a few courses on udemy, i found out the stuff i wasnt understanding in college was because of the way it was presented to me. I have now learned so much and can safely say I'm intermediate and about to start applying to companies. I'm currently 24. Trust the process

@@abi_hajdari Hey dude, its funny you comment right now because I struggled a lot to stay self motivated this year and i am just now getting back into things and getting serious with my code. I'm in the midst of publishing an app in the Playstore. I'm going to be honest with you, I wasted a ton of time and its been incredibly hard to stay motivated. So I havent applied to any companies yet, but I'm starting to make baby steps forward again. My brother is taking a web development bootcamp and he told me few people already got job offers already. The jobs are there man, we just cant give up. I'm in SoCal if you were wondering.
