Day 4 - The second day of our first off-trail section, we hiked from a 10,200 ft lake in the Ansel Adams wilderness, traversed the North Fork of the San Joaquin River Canyon, ascended over rugged North Glacier Pass, and finally descended to Thousand Island Lake to camp.
-----------------------------------------
This was our second attempt at hiking the JMT from Yosemite Valley to Mt Whitney. After last year's attempt in the 2023 record snow year, for this year, we decided to string together a 17-day route that was mostly on the John Muir Trail, but with some alternate routes and several sections of off-trail hiking.
We made it 11 of our 17 days but then unfortunately had to get off trail due to injury.
Despite all that, it was an amazing experience. This was the first time I've done this level of off-trail hiking, and although it pushed us to our limits, the off-trail hiking turned out to be the highlight of the trip.
We do intend to come back at some point in the future to finish.
