Another big tip, I hse Google street view a lot. You can see where the signs are, telling you which entrance to use. Helps you also figure out the easiest direction to go. Plus, you can use street view to check bridges and such

It will take you to the front door. Open google maps, drop a pin and look at the coordinates. On the garmin, go under where to and hit coordinates. Copy them over. It’ll take you exactly to that spot. Also, the garmin will allow you to route shape. You can make it go down any road you want.
@charlesd96524 жыл бұрын
When you find the entrance on google maps. Place a marker on it and get the latitude/longitude. In new location on the rand mcnally click on lat/long and put in the coordinates. It will route you straight to that location.

Hahaha! It's not the 80's anymore, classic! I agree, navigating in this day and age needs a multi platform approach. Use all of the available tools. The atlas is great to get you to the general area and is also crucial in route planning for restricted roads and low clearances. GPS helps the confidence while you're moving (although it's important not to completely trust it). And Google maps is a great tool for road delays and for customer location overview. It's also a good idea, if you've never been to a location before, to contact the customer and get their directions from the interstate or highway you're coming in from.

If you zoom in on google and find the truck entrance if press and hold your finger google will pin that area or entrance and sometimes give a better address. Another thing I notice is with the Garmin if you set your weight to 79,0000 lbs it will stop trying to send you way out. I use them all I also use copilot truck I bought it years ago when they had the one time app fee of $150, really helps me to trip plan.

I was in the Oilfields for 30 years, they didn't have any GPS then, in my later years it was just coming out but they don't recognize dirt roads. That's the biggest part of my trip, time wise, so they aren't much help. In 2013 and 2014 I went over the road, mainly to get out of the Northern Rocky Mountains and see what the rest of the west looks like, I was running the western 11 state's. I used my phone on VZ Navigator in the RV mode. I only had 2 or 3 times that it didn't take me right to the front door, then I would call the office of where I was delivering and they had a bad address on the shipment paperwork. My phone doesn't know what a dirt road is either. Living in Wyoming there's a lot of dirt roads, so I still use a paper map quite a bit.

Your right, the Overdryve 8 mount does suck. The suction cup for mine slowly cracked in half. Bought a Maxx Mount at the Petro in Joplin, to replace it. No complaints it's doing pretty good so far. My bad, well it's not broken. I quit in April, still got the damn truck though. I liked being on paper. Owner operator, not so much. You seem to be doing fine. I'm just going to resort to watching drivers on KZbin. I'm not even going to bother anymore.

GPS is good you still need to look at your truckers atlas and refer to your companies rolladex at the terminal and you can call the customer once you do complete the delivery or pickup right down the directions and put in a trapper keeper note book for future reference and when you return to the garage or terminal make about 100 copies on the machine in the office and and start a map folder for the other drivers if they ever get this stop do it for all stops the other drivers should be doing the same when I drove this is what we did it made it easy and stress free for all our drivers

Excellent review. I agree pretty much 100%. I used both for a year, then sold my Rand McNally. Just couldn’t trust it like you said. My summary after using both is the Garmin knows where it is and can get you lost, the Rand McNally gets lost. lol

I had the overdrive 8 and had the same EXACT issues every day.. It would think I’m on the road next to the highway or freeze up while I’m in the middle of Chicago. I ended up buying the Garmin Dezl and it works miles better than the rand. The only thing I do different is I will get the GPS coordinates for the drive way of the spot I’m going to off of google maps and pop that in the the gps. Like you said they both has their issues, its the driver of the rig to decide what works best for them

I have the Rand McNally Tablet TND80. I like the user interface and since I'm used to it, I find it pretty easy to enter addresses, etc. I also like that if you're looking for the next rest area along your route, it will pull them up and tell you whether it's northbound/southbound or eastbound/westbound. Garmin will list both, but doesn't tell you which is the one on your side of the freeway. RMcNally will also let you look for the next truck stop by brand, such as finding the next Petro, Flying J, etc.. Garmin will not filter them by brand that I know of. BUT,, the biggest complaint is that the Rand McNally is constantly loosing my location. It will think I'm 140 ft off the freeway, and then will try to reroute me constantly, while I'm actually on the freeway. I've had several and they all do the same thing. Called customer service and they say it's the truck's environment that's causing the problem and won't help. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to track where I'm at?

I always dropped a pin on google maps when the rand McNally wouldn’t let me spell out an address and plug it into the coordinates and it’ll get you exactly where you need to go. When I’m following a permit for oversize this helps me drop multiple coordinates so it doesn’t veer me off route. Same thing when I need to get on an exact street to enter a shipper or receiver.
@dougbsr8794 жыл бұрын
Regarding the RAND MCNALLY..... When you can't type the street name in,USE THE ZIP CODE BUTTON IN THE UPPER RIGHT SIDE FOR YOUR DESTINATION,I always Google the company name to verify the correct address and zip code. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU on the Rand,its junk mounting system sucks,the gps always goes out. If you connect power to both the magnetic mount AND the IPAD you get a wee bit better performance out of it. Another thing u can do is, once you at your destination,hit the sprocket SYMBOL in the lower left corner and press SAVE,this puts it in your address book EXACTLY WHERE U ARE AND THE EXACT ROUTE THERE WITHOUT CONFUSION.

Thought about getting something better but honestly the one i have really never have me any problems. Probably because i go over my route. Once in a great while the Garmin will guide me to a place i shouldn't be BUT i use common sense. Lol. I like the Garmin. Oh the mount works good. The only problem is the mount to the window.
