I also have Harbor Freight’s wool blanket. I learned the importance of the wool blanket spending a couple of winter months in the South Korean mountains near the DMZ. An “old timer” (he was 22) explained the importance of keeping a wool blanket with you all the time.

It is understandable that you would choose a FERRO rod to take with you but we hunter safety instructors teach new huntsman to take three ways to start a fire. We also give them the receipt for a fire engine, which burns for an 45 minutes at 8,000 feet. This is so they can make their own and stay alive. We show them to take a ferrotec rod, wind proof matches, and a butane lighter. We also give them the recipe for converting a regular”strike anywhere match” into a waterproof match.

I have similar items to yours . An Ontario RAT3 knife , a USGI canteen with lid and stove , an Estwing hatchet , an Exotac ferrorod , and two Indian made knockoffs of the Italian military wool blanket . I own much more gear of course . The Estwing is lighter than your Council axe , the difference in weight is made up by my inclusion of a Sierra saw . I sometimes wear a blanket match coat style , using a laundry bag pin as a brooch clasp . If you and I had to go with each others gear I don't think we would have much problem adjusting . Thanks for the video , friend .

Great list Dave. I agree with you.... Nathan sells some great ferro rods. I have tried some much more expencive ferro rods that don't perform as well. 4 directions bushcraft sells a great ferro rod aswell. Man I wish we had harbor freight in Canada. We would pay $80 for that blanket here. I would like to pick up 2 more blankets but can't get them at a reasonable price here. Great video Love that axe.

#1. Mora Companion, carbon steel. I like thin blades of about 4" length, and I even like how the cheap sheath clips to my pocket. #2. Jute twine... I dislike paracord, and bank line is great for trot lines but for an all around camping cordage, I prefer jute twine. It is strong, frizzes up to make great tinder, and it decomposes and can be left guilt-free. 3. Ferro rod, 'nuff said. 4. 40oz Kleen Kanteen with GSI cup. 5. Polish surplus 100% wool blanket that I sewed in half to make a sleep sack.

Your ferrorod is pretty large, but pretty worn out in the middle too - if you go on this way it will break long before time. Look up Mors Kochanski (R.I.P.) from Karamat Wilderness Ways, he showed how to throw sparks from the very end. I looked up Nathan4071's prices - 20US$ for a 6"x0,5" sounds fair, but still is 8-10 BIC-lighters. Your "wool blanket" is a moving blanket and not recommended for use as a bedding. A lot of customers complain about "a gasoline-type bad smell and sheds like crazy" - didn't you have any issues with that?

Not to be pedantic but it is a ferro rod like ferris as in iron but short for ferrocium which is the same thing that lighter flints are made from.
@susanp.collins78349 ай бұрын
No, it is not ferrocium - it is ferroCERium. One of the important elements is Cerium..

They have those canteen cup lids on Amazon.
@HighCarbonSteelLove6 жыл бұрын
Can you provide the link? When me and other people search amazon, all we found was GI "type" lids and the Rothco lids that do not fit the USGI canteen cup without modification. This one was designed to fit the USGI cup perfectly. -Dave
Unfortunately, without modification, this lid does not work well with the USGI Canteen Cup. -Dave

Not the SAME lid. I had the Knife maker ( Mr Fergeson) make some more. Available in limited quantity on eBay. Brandywinemab is the seller. Item # 323954925941
