Yay! Part 1! Here comes the question lol!...why did you take the coating off the knife?
@HighCarbonSteelLove8 жыл бұрын
+Louise Gardner Thank you for watching, Louise and great question! The weird black coating that comes on many of the knives from this manufacturer actually inhibits the performance, in my opinion. It is supposed to serve as a protectant for the blade from rust, however, I can do my own rust protecting without effecting performance. When the black coating is on there, the knife will not scrape a ferro rod very well for sparks and it will not strike a spark with a piece of chert or flint. Nice to hear from you, my friend! -Dave

Merry Christmas to you and yours! I do like that knife. I've been a little hesitant to pick one up. I only own one Condor blade, a Bushlore. I just can't seem to get it to hold an edge. I'm not sure if it's the 1075, or possibly a weak heat treat? I've sharpened the factory grind several times, and I also tried a pretty pronounced secondary bevel the last time. Still won't hold the edge. I'm going to re-profile it with a full convex next, and see what that does. As usual, an excellent video! Take care Sir.
@HighCarbonSteelLove8 жыл бұрын
+AllThingsBushcraft Merry Christmas to you too, my friend! You are not alone regarding your Condor not holding an edge. Its actually quite common and I sharpen my Condors often. This Kephart has not been too bad for me, however, my Bushlore and Woodlaw have a tough time holding an edge. I think it's due to the softer 1075 steel, which is my only issue with Condor knives. Whenever I use my Condor knives, I make sure I watch them like a hawk and prepare to sharpen them throughout the day. Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome comment! Let me know how the convex works for you. -Dave

I took your advice and went thru the Baryonyx knife company, thanks for that valuable advice also! Thank you again and keep up the amazing work! I just knew someone that could you use it much more than me. My sharpening system usually consists of DMT diafold diamond sharpener, a ceramic rod and a leather strop. Most of the time, I only need to 'touch up' and just used the ceramic rod and strop. This knife, being 1075 and coming with an excellent edge from Baryonyx, was very easy to touch up. I am very happy to hear that this knife has worked out well for you and I look forward to taking with you again soon! -Dave

Correction, the tip style is a spear point, not a drop point. On a drop point, the tip is about a third of the blade width down from the spine. Overall, I like the design. I came up with something similar with a drop point. Great woods knife.

My condor kephart is a good knife overall, though I find it harder to make feathersticks with this knife than others, it doesn't run very smooth on wood and i end up cutting them off! Mine didn't come with a square spine either. The sheaths from condor are awesome though!
@HighCarbonSteelLove7 жыл бұрын
Mine came with a decently squared off spine, however, I took my mill bastard file to it to make sure it was as sharp as I like it! I really love to use the spine as another tool. You are exactly right...the sheaths for Condor products are absolutely outstanding! -Dave

Great video! I love the condor sheath as well. Very high quality. I wish they did a bit better control on the blades. I had an imperfection on mine but as it was more of cosmetic blemish, I didn't mind so much. Thank you for sharing. -EDC

+EDC Adventures Thank you for the kind words, my friend! Yes, the Condor sheaths are great! The main issue I have with Condor knives is that they are only 1075, as opposed to 1095, but they really try to make up for the lower level steel and quality control issues with beautiful sheaths and knife designs. I don't mind cosmetic blemishes at all. I see knives as tools, and I use them as such. Thank you for watching! -Dave

When I got it, I was not at all pleased with the grind, but I cleaned that up and it has been great. The knife was only $80 at the time of purchase, but is $99 now. The Condor is $60. I am tempted to loan mine just for your review.
@HighCarbonSteelLove8 жыл бұрын
+Jon Cochran I am glad to hear that you are happy after cleaning it up. You are right..I can remember that knife being closer to $80 a few yrs ago, and now $100. From what I do know about the knife, I think that $100 is well worth what you get. It looks to be a great knife. While I am flattered about the loan to review, I am always apprehensive to borrow gear, especially for reviews, because I wouldn't want to hurt your baby. I believe the Condor Kephart is right around the $40 - $50 range on the Baryonyx Knife Co. website but it is far from the knife that the Trade knife is. -Dave

Say Heah, I also have a few knives too. My Kephart is my Blind Horse Bushcrafter which I had the handle flattened and lolishrd, When I flattened and lolished the handle it looked like a more expensive Kephart. A big difference than when the handle looked like a broomstick. I wear a large glove and it fit's my hand perfectly, My Bushcrafter Kephart is in O1 and a Scandi Grind and a very sharp 90° spine. But I ran into a little problem, The knife made it loose in the sgeath, So Ashlee (Battle Horse) took great care of me and I got a square bottom dangler sgeath that fits it like a glove, I did wear it as my neck carry but when I put a dangle belt attachment (Leather Frig) I love wearing it as a dangler now and it has a fire loop. I love mine and Thanx for reminding me of mine. Good job on the video.

Say Heah Dave, When I had the handle on my Blind Horse Bushcrafter Thinned down, Actually flattened and polished. It turned out looking like a beautiful Kephart, I never like the way the broomstick handles looked, But it still fits my large hand perfect. But the knife fit in the sheath loose, So I finally contacted Battle Horse and they corrected that problem even with a nicer Square Bottom Sheath, But then the old sheath fit my Rodent 5 perfect. I could really understand why Horace Kephart liked that style of knife, I actually have 4 knives with some sort of Kephart style of spear point knives, My Blind Horse Bushcrafter, my O. K. C. Blackbird SK-5, my Modified Battle Horse Attitude and a German I Army Issue (I think East German Army Issie) Anyhow a good design that has a pretty strong tip. That's important to me for a strong survival bush craft knife and yet to be able to work wood especially making a fire board or drilling into wood with that kind of tip. Yeah, I especially enjoy my B H Bushcrafter when I use it in one of my Fav. Trio's. Yeah I wish I could be a photographer, The Blind Horse Bushcrafter with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and the Bacho Laplander makes a very handsome Trio as well as a very competent set of cutting tools. Yeah one of my Fav's. Job well done Dave, Keep up the good work.

What is the height of the blade?
@HighCarbonSteelLove6 жыл бұрын
Right in the middle, from the bottom of the blade to top of the spine is just short of an inch. About 15/16. Thank you for taking the time to watch and ask your awesome question, Vlad! -Dave

The Condor and Bark River versions were the smaller size of two sizes i believe (B.R does a cutdown mini kephart too) though someone was saying the museum original Kephart's kephart is point heavy due to a lifetime of sharpening.

By the way, I do like Condors 420HC Stainless. I have the Wilderness Tool which looks like a small hatchet with a larger hatchet on one side and a smaller one on the other side and a arch that is semi sharp chisel grind well sort of a chisel and the side of the handle is sharp and used as a knife, it's curved so it slices well there is also a sharpened hook on the tool. Digging for roots for cordage or digging a kitty hole or just digging a area for the camp fire is done easily with this tool. I also love using this tool to set up champ, sgekters, bed, erc. It's a pound in weiggt but very well balanced so it doesn't feel heavy at all a real necessary wilderness tool. Once we settle down in camp I love wearing it as a do all chores knife. It slices, dices and chops really well.
