Spending the Day Bushcrafting with the Condor Bushlore Knife. Today in the forest, we are spending the day bushcrafting with the Condor Bushlore Knife. This is a revisit after owning this knife for over a year now. We do some batoning, carving, feather sticking and show the strenth of the spine, making shavings and using a ferro rod. Check out the best place to buy this knife below:

1075 is a soft steel and is prone to edge rolling but I have grown to love it. Because of the softness, the blade is very tough and does not chip easily. It is also very easy to hone and sharpen. Most of the time all you need is a ceramic rod and a strop. the ceramic rod is to hone the blade edge and the stop will make it razor sharp. The good thing about this steel is that it takes stropping very well and you can get the edge to be one of the sharpest edge possible.

Dave, you must have one of the first batches of the second gen, they are the best of the bushlores out there. The heat treating is really good. They had stitching on the belt loop instead of a rivet. The spine wasn't sharpened.i added a convex secondary bevel and it hasn't chipped or rolled on me yet. Try it, it definitely works. We got the best version of the bushlore made, so consider yourself lucky!

Love this knife for general camping, and bushcraft - it batons really well. Had mine for a couple of years and no complaints. It was inexpensive, and the leather sheath is top quality. It's cheap enough that if something happened or I lost it, then it wouldn't be the end of the world. A little linseed oil goes a long way to keeping the wood handle in good shape. Easy knife to sharpen in the field as required. Condor make a great product at a reasonable price. Got mine from Baryonyx knives. Great video review.

He died last year, he was even more amazing than I realized. I learned some things about him after he died I didn’t know, he had some power friends, was one of the first solders to meet up with the Russians, liberated concentration camps, his unit was very famous. He never fired his gun, yet took over 100 German solders prisoner by himself, they wanted to surrender, he was never more terrified in his life he said. He had some crazy war stories that I tell to my boys.

i received my bushlore yesterday . i could feel all the hardware and spine edge, as they were all a bit above the handle surfaces.it came sharp enough to do great curly feathers out of the box .i then hit it with the strop for that little extra sharpness before i went out .so i went out and did some more feather sticking and some notches. came home last night and still cut through thin advertising paper. i guess they still have a hit and miss with the handle area finishing .later all .

Say Heah Dave. I have a Kephart Style Knife. Mine is the Blind Horse Bushcrafter. But I had the handle flattened because I don't like broomstick handles. I like flatter handles because if round had good control, Hockey Sticks would be round. Oh, and I had it polished. Man, It came out looking like a high end Kephart. It's in the O1, The first sheath was way too big since I got a flatter handle, But they replaced it for a square bottom sheath that fit's beautifully. I have a dangler also . So yeah it's one of my Fav's. My Lil Tank Bush Craft Knife, I mean it's a tough one. No worries batoning it and yet it's a pretty good Carver. I like teaming it with my 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk and my Wooden Handle Fiskar Folding Saw. I usually take my Victorinox Rangergrip 78 as a back-up for a complete Afternoon Delight Trio. But sometimes I add my Becker BK-4 with this set incase I have to clear my way to my spot. and ofcorce if I want to baton bigger pieces if wood, But yeah, My vintage B H Bushcrafter is a Fav. It reminded me right away of your Condor Bushlore, I'm also enjoying a Alec Bradley White Gold watching and kibitzing with the boy's watching the video's.,,.

i like 1075 on larger blades myself...i have built many knives using that steel and have never had a problem. i own a condor hudson bay and it sparks well enough with a piece of obsidian or chert as does my condor golok. but you are correct David in saying that it does not throw sparks quite as well as 1095...but much has to do with how the steel has been tempered after the initial quenching...the longer the temper, the softer the steel becomes...even 1095 will not throw sparks off the spine on a blade that has been differentially hardened, whereby making the edge harder for better edge retention, but making the rest of the blade more ductile for strength...atb...woods

Appears to be a great knife. Maybe you set yourself up for disappointment that isn't really there when you start looking at other knives. This would be easy to do since there are a million other bushcraft knives out there vying for our attention. A lot of really good ones, too. But how many knives do you need? A couple, three, maybe four? To do different things. I've got a few. Looking to add one. Could be this Condor.

Wonderful demo of the Bushlore. I have had mine for about the same time. The grind was off when I got it, more on one side then the other, not bad but I fixed that. It now has a razor sharp edge. It is fairly easy to get and edge on it so I would imagine the RC is probably about 55-56. I kind of wonder how much there heat treat varies batch to batch. Overall you can not beat the knife in this price range, and like you I think, there sheaths are a work of old school quality.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, Dan! Great to hear that fixed up the grind & edge with no problem! I also wonder how the heat treat varies from batch to batch and knife to knife. For example, I love my Woodlaw but it doesn't seem to have the same, good heat treat as my Bushlore and Kephart knives. A lot of people don't love the sheaths as much as I do. I, like you, think they are outstanding and we are lucky to get such nice, well made leather sheaths with our Condors. If you watch any of my videos this condor Bushlore is my primary knife I use. I have had this knife for a little more than 2 years and when I first got it I had to put it on a stone to get it hair popin sharp and first thing I noticed is the edge rolled on it, after hitting the stone with it again I gave it just a light touch of a convex edge with a mouse pad and 800 grit sand paper and then stropped it and it has never been on a stone since then, I strop it after every use and it is still hair popin sharp, I did restitch the belt loop once too when the stitches came out but in almost 3 years of hard use I can say it has been an amazing knife and sheath for the money and would not have any trouble recommending it. My only advise to someone buying this knife would be to use a leather strop to maintain the edge instead of stone after every use. I will say that since my wife gifted me with a new mora classic #2 for Christmas the condor has not been getting as much use lol. Great video!!

Mine came with a nice saber grind and all it usually takes is a good stropping, as well. I will throw it on some diamond stones sometimes, due to the fact that this knife loses it edge quicker than 1095 and/or 01 tool steel. Awesome gift from you wife! The Mora Classic No 2! Blackbird SK-5 which is a 5" blade Flat Grind in the CM 154, and one of my Fav's my Blind Horse Bushcrafter which I had the handle thinned down (flattened)and polished, It looks like a High End Kephart with a Scandi Grind in O1 My other Fav. is the continuos Trailing Tip like on my Skookum Bush Tool, Those two are prolly my Fav's, Thanx, Dave.

Had one of these for a couple of years now. Great sheath, but the finishing on the knife is a little rough. But who doesn't like fixing up their knives a bit? I'm always a little surprised how well it performs for such an inexpensive knife.

I would have kept the original grey coating. Not to be a hater, the fake patina looks like a piece of defective metal. I am surprised how new the handle looks. Mine darkened very soon after touching it. One thing that we do share is....Loving the Condor product and the Bushlore itself.

Nice video, Dave. I've always liked the look and feel of the Bushlore, but have not quite convinced myself of buying one yet. I'm often torn between this or the Kephart style, I actually like the Bushlore design but wondering if I wouldn't prefer just a slightly longer blade for the kind of stuff I would do with it. I guess at the end of the day they are both great blades for the price point.

+Smell N Roses Thank you, Rashid! Nice to hear from you, my friend! To be honest, I think the Condor Kephart is the superior knife. I did a 2-part mini series on it a couple of months back. Condor has great designers and they are beautiful knives with excellent sheaths. My Kephart just carves better (much more precise), holds an edge a bit better and can do all of the same tasks. I also like how the Kephart feels in the hand a more than the Bushlore. Not bad knives for 1075 carbon steel. Now we're just talking here but I really prefer a scandi grind with 1095 high carbon steel, kind of like a Mora ;) -Dave

HighCarbonSteel Love Yes I do recall your comparison videos showing the two knives side by side basically. When I consider buying a knife, your channel is always one of the first places I check for reviews and suggestions. I purchased my Mora on your advice and I agree its a great little carver and personally I think its safe to say that, considering its extremely low price, you can't buy a better bushcraft knife for the money. I'm sure it's just me and my lack of experience but to be honest I don't get too excited about the scandi grind though. I really like my Mora (Companion HD) but I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would. For small task I find myself just going for my EDC folder, which has more a flat grind on it. But again I am in no way qualified to talk about knives and which grind is best. I'll leave that for experts like you, my friend! Thanks for bringing us these high quality videos, I always learn something from watching your channel.

I own a few Condor Tool and Knife products. A small hatchet and the Primitive Bush Tool. I have been eying the Kephart for a while and your video made me even more curious. While as SHOT Show they let me open a package with the Kephart and fell in love with it. I'll be stealing your idea and blue the steel when I pick one up in the next month or two. I appreciate you doing reviews on the "working man" priced tools. I own the gamut from $10 Mora knives to let's just say very expensive customs. They all have their merits. Keep up the good work and thanks for the videos. The Bushlore looks like a very capable blade. You mention a love hate relationship. If you have the time, you can message me with your relationship with the knife. I'm very curious to get your 5hougjts, as you and I have very similar approaches to the outdoors and skill sets. +HighCarbonSteel Love It has been very handy. Works very well. Great little hatchet. Really nice for tight spaces where an axe or small axe is too dangerous to use and when you need a bit more meat than a knife. For example, its great for clearing branches in a cedar tree when you need to shelter in a tree for sleep or to hide while hunting. I just burrow my way in and cut just enough of the branches to give me a place to rest and then weave what I cut into the branches above to add more of a roof or weave them in front to create more cover or place them beside me for more wind protection.

Jonathan Zook That sounds, great, my friend! Excellent usage you described! My biggest problem with Condor knives has been the edge retention, however, I haven't had the same problems with Condor axes. My Condor German splitting is is excellent and the steel is perfect for an axe. For axe work, the 1045 steel isn't bad at all. Thank you for the reply, Jonathan! -Dave

Thats a good, tough question, my friend! I think it's all about personal preference. Each of them have their strong points. If money is an issue, I believe I paid a bit less for the Bushlore but outside of that, it depends on what type of knife you like. You cannot go wrong with either. While I like the slimmer profile, spear point and fine carving ability of the Kephart, I prefer the beefier handle of the bushlore. Neither has ever disappointed me with any task and for the good price of each, why not get both? Thank you for watching! -Dave

+Jeff Sherrod And a horrible, horrible ide. I've tried that, and all it does is give you a handle that is never any good for a carrying knife. Motor oil is fine for hoe handles, but that's about it. It's just an unholy mess. They make real products to use on wood that preserve it, but that don't create a mess. There's no reason to use motor oil when you can do the job right in half an hour, and for five bucks.

@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
+Achilles Daniel Adam Thank you for watching and leaving your kind words, my friend! I would think they would perform similarly, although I have never used any of the Condor Basic Bushcraft knives. Great questions! -Dave

+HighCarbonSteel Love Yes Dave I have a Mora Bushcraft black and I am waiting for the new Mora Garberg to be released soon. I hope it will be an excellent knife even if it is in stainless. But as you also showed Mora 2000 is an excellent one so the new Garberg that resembles it a lot between 2000 and 510 in my opinion must be a really really good one. But I found in really good price the Condor Bushcraft 5 and I think to give it a try just to have another one around because I absolutely agree that Mora is outstanding. Does the handle of Condor needs linseed oil or something similar or their wood and finish is excellent? My only concern is its steel 1075. But I like its old school looks. To tell the truth I have seen a swedish knife called Casstrom Forest knife and is a full tang and I believe that is a very promising blade as it looks like. Another one is also TBS bushcraft. Both look solid constructions. But I believe for sure that with a Morakniv and a small axe everything is perfect. Just we can never stop to like and own new knives )

+Achilles Daniel Adam The Bushcraft Black is such an excellent knife! I love it. The 2000 is good, but I prefer Mora's 1095 steel. I think most Condor's are worth picking up. They are very affordable and attractive. They have great designers. I wouldn't be too concerned with the 1075 steel, as it's not horrible and it's easy to sharpen. Let me know how you like it when you pick it up, my friend! Nice talking with you! -Dave

I have all the knives you mentioned and this would be your best bet for a camp knife.These Condors are really nice little knifes as long as you don't mind touching them up a bit. They are inconsistent in there sharpness and are prone to ship with bent tips. I would strongly recommend forcing a patina ASAP as these knives will rust super fast. However once you put an edge on them, patina and a lanyard it's hard to keep your hands off of them. Really great looking knife that just sits great in your hand.

+Wheels gone Wild I think the best one I own out of the 3 is the Kephart. The Bushlore is decent, but the edge tends to roll more than the kephart. I am not a big fan of the Woodlaw after using it for quite some time. I just never took to that one like I wanted to. It's not a very comfortable handle that the saber grind does hold an edge well, nor does it sharpen very easily. Let me know which one you go with, my friend! -Dave

Batoning any size wood is both completely unnecessary and silly. It is both easier and far more efficient to make tinder by cutting than by batoning. You should use your knife, but you should use it for cutting, not splitting, especially when cutting works problem. But for those who baton large wood, 1075 is a better choice that 1095. 1075 is an excellent steel, and is actually a good deal tougher than 1095. It's a very widely used machete steel for this very reason, and is also used on large knives. I prefer the finish on Condor knives to any forced patina. The finish they provide protects the knife from rust. Contrary to popular opinion, forced patina does not. As for edge retention, it shouldn't be a problem with any steel. Edge retention is why God invent pocket strops and honing pocket honing steel and or honing rods.
