Highgate & The Northern Heights!
David joins a Hidden London Tour of Highgate's abandoned high-level station, a reminder of how many tube lines came to be and of an ambitious plan from the 1930s - the Northern Heights - which was never completed.

Thank you so much for sharing. I visited Highgate one summer during the early 90's. I walked along the railway walk from Crouch End and managed to squeeze through the then chain-link fence into the left-hand tunnel. I was on my own, and as I emerged from the other end of the tunnel, I found myself in a completely overgrown patch of ground surrounded by trees and bushes, and concealing a weird station platform which looked quite old. There were no tracks. I wandered about for a bit, cursed myself for not bringing a camera and eventually climbed up on the platform and explored the structure. I believe this was before any renovation began. It was a very eerie experience as there wasn't much sound from the busy main road just a stone's throw away. It's a pity I didn't think of exploring the tunnels to the north west! I would love to have seen the station in the 50's-60's when it operated, or even in victorian times. Of course, now the tunnels have been blocked with much more substantial gates and are now a bat sanctuary!

Sounds like a sick experience. I spent countless hours in the station during my teen years in the mid to late 2010s and u could easily slip through where people had cut the metal bars and access the left tunnel. There was never any bats in there only what I can describe as dual bulletin board sort of objects running down the middle seperated by a few feet. The large door to enter the tunnel has since been solidly closed and even if you get past the bars you can no longer enter the tunnel. But I wonder when it stopped being a sanctuary as it definetly wasnt post 2014/15 the first time I went.

Good video, I remember learning about the northern heights in Jay Foreman's video. Cool that you went up the secret escalator.

(05:10, 07:10) shd you wish to place it in the video. A bit of a shame that you were new to the game and momentarily forgot about the only important thing ~ the view from the camera. Instead of the bloody ads on the wall, would rather have been presented with footage of the quite long and as stated very rarely used escalator.

I would have loved to see the 59 stock at Muswell Hill. I used to run the disused lines, wonderful!

When I was a kid used to walk that line......and get chased off. When I was a teenager (line closed by now) revisited and cut the cables off for bit of cash. You could walk through the tunnels at both ends in those days.

If you go to the booking hall at East Finchley and look at the window there’s an LT roundel and a sort of eye shaped piece of glass which would originally have been the blue LNER logo, but is now just plain clear glass.

0:19 your map is wrong Very wrong. The path between Cranley Gardens and Muswell Hill Station is wrong. The path which you have shown to from [the incorrect] Muswell Hill Station to Alexandra palace is wrong - the start and route is wrong, and the terminus of Alexandra Palace was at the palace itself - not the modern day station by the same name, which is further East.

Yeah, not sure what went wrong there. There's a better version elsewhere in the video. I actually cycled that line just last month.
