This is all true, I’m 29 and had terrible habits in my teens and early 20s. Fast food and videogames pretty much every day. Sometimes I’d look in the mirror and see what felt like my early 40s self looking back at me and it made me depressed and insecure, and I spent time around people and made decisions that reflected and reinforced that. Made some changes to my lifestyle a few years back, started lifting, eating healthy (classic homemade food, nothing crazy), sleeping better, doing basic skincare (sunscreen, moisturizer 2x a day, wash my face before bed), and I look younger than I did at 22 now. I have more energy to pursue my personal goals which helps with my stress management and mental health probably more than the habits themselves. People will see my driver’s license from a couple years ago and laugh at the night and day difference. Take care of your body and it’ll take care of you. It seems the younger you are, the quicker you can bounce back from years of bad decisions, but I think it’s always possible. If I could add one thing to your video, I’d say having a passion and following it seems to keep you younger than almost anything. This is why a lot of musicians and artists seem young even in old age imo, and most older people with “young energy” I meet are creative or otherwise dedicated to some sort of craft that keeps their mind and imagination active.

I hear you. It does seem very unfair that ACEs, adverse childhood events (that we couldn’t control) have such a strong impact on our brains and health. But I do believe there are ways to get through it. We just have to work harder than other people. Fish oil is pretty important for brain health, if you can tolerate it perhaps give it another go. Although I did hear what you said that you gave it up. But the military has a protocol for traumatic brain injury as well as PTSD, which is 3 g of fish oil three times a day until symptoms are resolved. I’ve been taking fish oil my whole life but I recently got up to six a day and wow, the difference is huge. I feel like I can think really well and this feeling of “everything is going to be OK” comes over me.

Okay, I agree that it's important to think of how your habits effect your long term health, of course. But if you only live for a future version of yourself, you're gonna miss out on your whole life. Sometimes it's okay to go out with your friends and drink or eat some ice cream with your kids. Life is about balance. Yes, you should make healthy habits but having some fun once in a while is the stuff you're gonna remember when you're old. You don't want to get old and realized you sacrificed all the most precious experiences you could have had in your youth just to live a few extra years in your 90's.

I also agree! Worrying about all these “bio markers” and thinking you’re going to beat the reality of being human can cause a person to be obsessed. “OMG I had an ice scream cone…I’m biologically aging!!!” Or “I ate some non-Organic! The horror!” This obsession with all these studies and “bio markers” is the other extreme to those who live unhealthy- smoke, drink, overweight etc. Nothing seems to be good enough…if you’re already fasting, it’s not the most effective way or if you have normal bio markers you have to have exceptional bio markers. If you exercise it’s not good enough. When does it end? What about the anxiety and fear all of this creates? I’m not saying people shouldn’t try to be healthier but I believe there is a mental condition when people become obsessed with it.

Hi Mike, from my experience, the most important relationship is - with yourself. No amount of socializing will ever fill the void. As Sartre put it "If you are lonely when you are alone, you are in bad company". Within this perspective, if someone feels lonely, "socializing" might be just as bad as an addiction - just using other people to numb down dissatisfaction with oneself.

I have ehlers-danlos syndrome too. Needed my first surgeries related to it at 25yrs old. Things puttered along okay until I got to about 33-35yrs old as well...then I worsened with my EDS and needed more surgery and I also developed POTS, MCAS, and interstitial cystitis. I think those of us that are hypermobile have some aspects of aging accelerated due to our abnormal collagen genetically, and I think other aspects are slowed down conversely. Regardless I hear you it has been an uphill battle for me too, and most people don't understand my disorder or what I am going through. Needless to say, genetics contribute a LOT to our outcomes in life. So does dumb luck...like not getting in a bad car accident or having a bad injury when young etc. We can control a lot, but a lot of it comes down to things beyond anyone's control. Like a person for example with a stroke or Parkinson's would love to exercise often, but their body doesn't cooperate, or at minimum you cannot exercise the same way as before and over the years it adds up to more complications.

It really bugs me when folks in their 20s&30s say they feel old, or say they're old. more like you're physically and mentally tired/weak. They're just physically degrading, often times by choice...

Yes. I agree. Unfortunately, unless you’re looking for it, the education isn’t readily available to show people WHY they are feeling that way. The food industry definitely doesn’t want good information to be released and encouraged in the mainstream.

75 and told I look late 50s. Had my 3 year check up tests with my cardiologist recently. He told me I'm in great shape. I feel better than I did in my 40s, because I'm also mentally well which I wasn't for the first 50 years. I eat healthy, moderate exercising regularly (including weights), keep negative people at arms length, and feel gratitude every day. I still enjoy a glass of Red, or vodka and tonic a couple times a week. My only vice. 😊

Tuning in from Canada. I am 44, but people give me 30 when meeting me for the first time. I have been physically active most of my life, never smoked, never took any drugs, and ate healthy since age 22. I have no disease and take no prescription meds. Low carb and fasting improves my: - SLeep cycle - VO2 max more than 200% - Muscular endurance - Belly fat - Overall agility FOr me it's clear that modifying the diet is more effective than trying to improve each parameter on its own. Being on a high carb diet I need to work on these aspects specifically, but on low carb they improve automaticaly

I’m turning 44 in a couple months and according to my garmin watch, I’m 35 in fitness. I’m in the top 10% of my peers as far as VO2 max goes. I used to race XC mountain biking in my teens into my early 20’s. I then partied for a decade, drank, boozed up….you have a choice guys. I got back into fitness by my mid 30’s again. I’m almost ready to start racing again. Still need to lose a couple pounds, but I feel great. My balance is super good. I can sit cross legged indian style and go to standing without using my hands. 2-3 times a week cardio, 4-5 days a week resistance/weights. Fasting and a healthy diet. The choice is yours

I definitely agree these things can certainly improve your aging but I think some of it just comes down to genetics/luck. For example, my grandma lived to be 104 and she hated fruits and vegetables (ate nothing but coca-colas cheese, cookies, and ham) didn’t do any intentional exercise, drank like a fish but had no health problems or cognitive decline. One of my co-workers on the other hand, was a health nut. Did absolutely everything right exercised everyday, ate insanely healthy etc died suddenly at 56.
@rmcq1999 Жыл бұрын
Did everything absolutely right according to whom? Many of these cases that I hear involved following strict plant based diets. "They ate vegan for decades and then all of a sudden they were full of cancer".

Watching from Nova Scotia Canada. Enjoy your video content. It would be good if you talked about certain blood markers on kidney function that can give false positives. For instance, blood creatinine and EGFR. They are just converted equations with each other and can sometimes give people who have a lot of lean body mass, who eat a lot of protein, and who work out intensely, an “abnormally” high creatinine level. Maybe talk about the value of getting a Cystatin C test done to show true kidney function.

How does your child know they love fish sticks if you’ve never given her fish sticks to learn about them? The number of foods my 4 year old doesn’t know she would love can, literally, fill a grocery store. If they don’t get started, you don’t have to deal with how to stop.

But that only works for the youngest years. After they're in school and socializing in your absence, the junk flows freely. 😢
@sarahrosen4985 Жыл бұрын
@@TerriblePerfection oh, I know, I know! It's an uphill battle the whole way. The whole way. And not just with food. But I have learned that having a hard line at home goes a long way. Will they cheat on you outside? Yes but they will retain that kernel of 'right' and, hopefully, eat more food under your roof than Out There. Do you follow Really Very Crunchy? There's a mom with the food thing locked down!😂 She's my North star. Even if it is only in their 20s, your children will start to really put the pieces together of how they feel when they eat certain foods and what to stay away from if they want to function. It's also easier to go back to eating *more* vegetables rather than trying to learn what vegetables are at 25. I had no such education growing up on pop-tarts, Lucky Charms and Swiss Miss but by high-school intuitively figured out that fasting in the morning and only eating plain tuna before a final exam was the only way to keep my brain clear and my energy high. My little one gets her 10:00 'breakfast' and 14:00 lunch at daycare. Not up to my standards but leagues above the standard US food. When they have a birthday party, the breakfast is box cereal with soy milk (there is a milk allergy in the daycare) instead of tuna or hummous sandwiches + tomato, cucumber and red pepper salad. That is how my little one learned about breakfast cereal. When we see it in the shop, she can identify ones she has eaten in daycare (always the sugar ones) but she has never asked me to buy cereal or said that she particularly likes it. She also learned about sugar-drink 'juice' boxes when we were out with her best friend and her family. She found the concept of inserting the straw interesting but doesn't ask for them. She takes water as the given thing you drink all day. Good luck and be strong! We need it!

@@sarahrosen4985 Mine are 24 and 26 now! 😂 I was a pretty good mom but I made a lot of food mistakes in my ignorance (e.g., farmed salmon!). Our daughter went through a vegan stage but thank goodness she ended that. Our son intuitively gravitates to meat. Both enjoy cooking real food from scratch at least. It's hard to watch my husband eat sugary yogurt and piles of rice, but we can only control our own diet, and that can be challenging enough. Cheers!

@@TerriblePerfection oh, Luann, my daughters are 26, 28 and 30. They should all get together. 😄 Hey, farmed salmon was about the top of the line back then and, remember, we didn't have internet, Google and Amazon. You did great! I'm raising my 4 yr old granddaughter on my own now. That's my current experience with 'try to teach them correctly'. I've had her since she was 6 months old. What a great Do Over it is! The best part is my daughters seeing how endlessly patient I am (now - shhhhh) and project it back on their childhood and think I was always so wonderful (again - shhhhh!). My daughters grew up on a Best of Times Worst of Times diet. Lots of fresh local veggies and homemade soup but I did teach them joys of eating marshmallow fluff and Betty Crocker frosting with a spoon straight from the jar. And chocolate chip cookie dough. And sooooo much Ben & Jerry's. Important life skills! A typical dinner would be homemade chicken vegetable soup and dessert. As adults they eat LOTS of vegetables, really healthy and unprocessed and are all well inside the normal weight range. Only time will tell how I do with this next generation. Enjoy your kids. Cheers!

I totally agree with this study however it’s often hard to detect age these days with so much ‘Botox’, fillers and procedures being used. This study highlights inside out aging effects based on lifestyle but society seems to prefer the quick fix of outside/in vanity. I think many of these procedures actually have -ve effects on mitochondrial function regardless how young someone looks.

I am from Pacific Palisades, California... I ate a lot of greens, took vitamins and no gray hair until age 60+, have some near my temples but that's it at 65. Most people think I am in my forties. Took pycnogenol, vit C, Quercitin daily 20+ years...made a difference. Had COVID and it did increase my grey hair. Now on NMN, transresveratol, CaAKGabd Urolithin A. Took Spermidine , Fisetin but it just didn't do much for me...not sure will continue these . NMN is a game changer....saved me from long COVID. Need to exercise, my downfall. Use a power plate and feel much better using it . Use red led light...game changer. Also use red led on my elder cat...she does better with arthritis pain.

I am nearing 60 and retired last year. I hated exercise growing up but I forced myself to challenge it since 39, running road races and lots of trail running, hiking, and mountaineering. I got really into yoga and Pilates for 3 years before Covid. I self learned to swim since last year. It is now my fave exercise, an hour pool time 5/6 times a week. I just got back to swing dancing and doing animal movements (GMB on youtube). For decades I rarely eat out, cook 2 meals a day (16/8 fasting daily) from scratch. Rarely drink alcohol. No smoking. No SO no kids. Only responsibility is taking care of elderly mother who lives with me. I try to minimize stress. I typically sleep 8 hours a day. I just want to be healthy, mobile, and mentally sound until death. I have no one to care for me in my old age therefore it’s my motivation to keep moving.

I wonder how voice predicts aging too. I have noticed that some people sound elderly in their 50s yet others still sound youthful in their 70s, 80s. an example is Tony Blackburn who has been a radio broadcaster since the early 1960s and still presents Sounds of the Sixties now aged 80. I just found very often on different pages who discuss how old we look, people post their pictures saying "everyone tells me I look 30 and I'm 45"...and those people usually look exactly their age 😅We are just a bit delusional about ourselves, and people compliment each other to make us feel good (because when they do that we like them more, it is a studied fact).
