Rough Summary: 1. Study first thing in the morning to avoid psychological crap. 2. Wake up early to do that. Mammals are genetically active during sunrise and sunset. 3. Re-frame your thoughts. You are what you spend your time thinking about and tell yourself. 4. Structure your environment and choose people you spend your time with wisely. 5. First 20% of your engagement yield 80% of behavior. 6. Self-control is not a good idea. Reduce the need of self-control. 7. Spend time with nature for confidence.

Not to discredit the power of thoughts but there was (and actually still is) an opportunity to settle yourself into meditation. So instead of giving attention to something that is always changing, something that comes and goes, give it to that which is always there, the unchanging. Summary: The process of learning comes from allowing conscious thoughts to cross the barrier into the unconscious. By generating conscious thoughts into the subconscious, they become conditioned to resurface into the conscious thought more readily (thinking about recall). The marquee way to allow thoughts to seep into the subconscious is by absorbing them at a time when the mind is most readily available to do so, periods where brain activity is in a relaxed state (He doesn't mention this law but this is known as the Yerkes-Dodson Law). In general, the human senses are evolutionarily primed to respond best at dawn and dusk. This evolutionary trait, coupled with the lack of expended processing chemicals (factors that play into this include the chemically refreshing nature of sleep and the clean-slate nature of the start of the day because of a lack of stressors and brainpower usage), make dawn specifically the most adept time for subconscious processing. As thoughts enter your subconscious mind, resurface to the conscious mind, and are sent again to the subconscious, you've practically built a factory that produces a reinforcement of learned material. This, unfortunately, can also be applied to negative perceptions of the self that extend to the subconscious and are reinforced by behavior. This is adjusted by changing frame of thought. This is where intrinsically motivated achievers differ from others. Their subconscious is already primed to move toward action, whereas the alternative has to expend energy just to get motivated to do the action and STILL have yet to perform the action. There's a process toward moving toward an intrinsically motivated person that does not need to expend chemical willpower. Actions like mediation, change in emotional and physical environments that reinforce optimal learning and thought framework.

Kevin Corrigan I cant speak for OP, but I can share a few things that people have done in order to overcome deficiencies in their resume. Generally, the more time passes from when the graduate, the less the GPA matters as long as you use that time productively by working, doing research, volunteering. You can also do a post baccalaureate or masters program to demonstrate that you’ve improved as a student, though you really need to make a statement by getting near-perfect grades if you go that route. And even then some schools won’t even look at your application, so it still ends up being a numbers game of applying broadly. Your state school is the one most likely to cut you a break. Finally, you can do really well on the MCAT, which is the route I took to overcome a low-ish GPA, albeit not a 2.8

Key takeaways: *Design a system so you expend minimum willpower to do the things that build you up.* - Have a tranquil state of mind that's conducive to learning (transferring information from conscious to subconscious). This can be done by studying/working first thing in the morning, before we have experiences that cloud our mind. Good sleep, good presence (nature, friends) can reset bad thoughts. - Repetition and attention are ways you can increase the chances of information sinking into your subconscious (learning is like rolling a dice).

It’s funny. I spent 13 years of my life in school and hated every second of it. Dreaded school so I never listened in class which eventually put me in the lowest level classes besides the Special Ed classes. This of course only made me hate school even more which caused me to perform even worse and the spiral continued. I stayed in these classes until my senior of high school where personal responsibility finally kicked in and I decided to put in the work to move into the regular classes for my grade. My friends and I all counted down the last month of high school as they all hated school just as much as I did. Only 1 out of the 6 of us had plans to continue their education and move onto college. I graduated 2 years ago and now I wish I was still in school. A couple of friends I play video games with all agree and we occasionally look back when we were all in English together and how much we hated our teacher and how much our teacher hated us. We all wish we were still in school. It’s crazy how school was the thing I hated the most in life and now that I don’t have it, I want it back. I never thought I could graduate from college but maybe I can. Hell, I’m sitting here watching a lecture on how to study in my free time. I think it’s worth a shot...

Bruh, NF wasn't talking about rapping against legends, he was talking about these underground non-talented rappers who are talentless. U think NF is that retarted to try and beat legends?!?! HELL NO!! Even If you go back and listen to songs like 100, Real, and Grindin', u hear him talking about how those rappers be chillin' with women instead of focusing on there careers and how while NF be selling Merch in front of they houses, they can't come back with attacks against him because he's WAAAAAAY better than them. U think legends have time to put women over their careers or do u think legends are just gonna sit back and let dissers get the last say?! HELL NO!!! Pay attention to the lyrics. Even in Statement, NF talked about how he grew up listening to Eminem and how today's music is garbage. Even in a tweet, NF said how he can't respect people who think less of Eminem. NF ISN'T RETARTED. And how can u not like Real and Intro??!! Bruh u straight sleepin'! "WAKE UP"! And Drake ain't worth sh*t compared to NF!! NF is more real with his music and although I haven't listened to all of Drake's music, I do know that he ain't really no different than these mumble rappers now-a-days. The only thing I can say is unique about Drake is the way he raps.......THAT'S IT!! NF is a better lyricist than him.....PERIOD. REALISM ALWAYS BEAT MUMBLE imo. The only thing I can agree on is his Moments album. The first time I heard it I thought it was garbage. The beats was already poorly produced, but when he had that auto tune on top of it as well, I almost didn't want to even listen to it no more. But it eventually grew on me. The only songs I REALLY like is Circles, Reality, Until I Die, and With Me. But :D no offense but...........U sound more like a hater who's mind is to small to be able to comprehend NF's lyrics. Quick guide on how to reset your circadian rhythm: 1. Fast for a couple days. That means two days, though it should be better if you can do three or more days. Don't eat more than 5~10% of your daily calorie intake (ideally eat 0 calories), keep yourself hydrated (drink isotonic breverages with no sugar if possibel, if not, drink water with a pinch of salt at least once a day, or when you feel the symptoms of hangover) and do your life normally. [The feeling of hunger is psychological, after some days fasting you will notice that you are not hungry anymore] 2. Take a walk early in the morning for at least 10 minuts. This works even during cloudy days, but then double the time you spend outside. Early means during the first hour after the sunrise, but just exposing yourself to the sunlight is enough to inform your body that those hours are day. 3. One hour before sunset, lower the brightness of every device you're using to it's minimum, and try to lower the brightness of lights in your house, or at least use them the least possibel. Obviously, go to bed as late as an hour after it gets dark. 4. On the third day, when you finally get to eat, try and choose the least refined foods, try to get mostly natural foods and things that are not too heavy for your body to process, such as soup. Soup is only for this day, the following days you should be able to eat normally, although you should really be careful with what you eat. 5. Done. Fast at least twice a month. Fast agane when you have to travel to another timezone, when jet lag affects the most. Sources: It was revealed to me in dreams

00:00 📚 Reading a textbook doesn't guarantee learning; outcomes vary. 02:33 🎲 Understanding study is not a linear process; focus on factors impacting comprehension. 04:06 🌅 Start studying early in the morning for a calmer mind, better ATP levels, and alignment with circadian rhythms. 09:31 🦉 Consider individual circadian rhythms when choosing optimal study times; teenagers might function better later in the morning. 16:12 💭 Psychological stress impacts learning; study early to avoid accumulating stress and distractions throughout the day. 22:09 🧠 Studying involves implanting conscious thoughts into the unconscious mind for effective learning. 23:31 🤔 Negative thoughts about oneself often reside in the subconscious, impacting perceptions and actions in life. 26:30 💭 Learning is the process of transitioning conscious thoughts into the unconscious mind, enabling automatic recall. 34:18 💡 Automatic thoughts stem from the unconscious mind, influenced by the thoughts we consciously focus on throughout the day. 42:55 🔄 Therapy and environmental changes can influence subconscious thoughts, altering perceptions and behaviors. 48:28 🧠 Studying in the morning is ideal as the mind is clearer and calmer, making it easier to focus. 50:26 📚 The earlier you study, the better; accumulating daily experiences disturbs mental tranquility, hindering focus. 51:38 🧘♂ Avoid mentally stimulating activities like social media before studying; maintain a calm and focused mindset for effective learning. 53:31 💻 Designate specific environments for work and leisure to control thoughts and improve concentration while studying. 56:10 💡 Focus on developing a positive thought environment to reduce the need for excessive self-control during studying.

Words cannot describe how grateful I am to be in this community for as long as I have. This analogy of the conscious and unconscious mind goes way further than just studying. It's about how you spend your time. If you can change your thoughts, you can change your actions. It will take a while, but it compounds on itself. If you want to change, you truly can. Keep going, you got this!

03:55 the more active your mind is the harder to information get in 04:09 first thing to learn the more calm and tranquil your mind is the more receptive it is 05:56 #1 Study first thing in morning 07:21 as you go through the day your mind become more active, that is why we need sleep, when you wake up there is a lot ATP and energy in mind and less adenosine but through out the day our adenosine rise and ATP decrease So basically sleep turn adenosine to ATP and clear Your mind from adenosine. Reason for Study in Morning: ATP vs Adenosine 08:08 Circadian Rythm 08:40most mammals tend to be most active at dawn and dusk and it's kind of interesting because like part of the reason that sunset and sunrise are so beautiful is because our eyes are actually evolved to have the highest degree of visual acuity during sunrise and sunset that's why color seems so vivid it's not like colors are magically more vivid during that time of the day it's because our organs of perception are designed for maximum acuity in our maximum receptivity of the environment during those times and that's not that's not just with our visual system our bodies are designed to be active or our minds are most designed to be active during like dawn and dusk

Everything he says here is so true. I've been watching these videos, both the long form interviews and the topic-specific ones like this one, for about a month and I can say that these Healthy Gamer vids really work. I'm not actually a gamer but I find myself struggling with the exact same things so it worked out anyways. I went from spending entire days from sunup to sundown trying to force myself to be productive and hitting a wall, trying to break through by sheer brute force. A part of me knew I wasn't lazy because a lazy person wouldn't be spending that much energy and trying so hard, but subconsciously I still believed it. I had to figure out where that belief/identity came from and why I was treating it as fact. The more videos I saw, the more people I found myself relating to and I started using the advice he gave to change the way I was thinking. I really did stop thinking about being productive and focused more on 'how do I work' and 'what happened to get me to that point'. It took focusing on self-work and unravelling negative ideas to start believing in my abilities to do the work. I also had to learn to sit in my discomfort and stop running away to fun activities to procrastinate but also to sit in my success and stop moving the goal before I was ready. It also helped to see different ways to approach work and different ways to think of the journey more than the destination. Meditation has done so much for helping me fall asleep at night and stay asleep, reduce my anxiety during the day, keep my mind calm during breaks between study sessions, and teach myself to focus better instead of having my mind wander during meditations. I think the latter has been the most helpful in me being able to keep my thoughts on one action rather than having it flit over to a new idea and I go off and do that other thing instead and procrastinate. My mind used to be like the dog from the movie 'Up'. Vata af. Juggling tasks on rotation was a game changer too. TL;DR It definitely isn't a Dr K's cult thing and it's not about his charisma (although that does help a lot...the name Dr Chad Thundercock lives in my head rent free along with the phrase "Get wrecked shitties"...which I unironically started saying before tackling chores or work). Gamer culture truly is hilarious and fun and a lot of you guys are really so lovely, supportive and kind.

Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 Understanding how the mind works is crucial for effective studying. 01:51 Reading material doesn't guarantee understanding; outcomes vary. 05:45 Study first thing in the morning for a calm mind, high ATP, and better circadian rhythm alignment. 11:06 Recognize individual variations; some teenagers may have different natural study times. 16:12 Avoid emotional experiences, conflicts, and distractions before studying for a more tranquil mind. 20:09 Understand that thoughts often come from the unconscious mind, and it's a challenge to control them. 22:09 Learning involves bringing thoughts from the unconscious mind to the conscious mind; aim to make productive thoughts your default. 22:36 Learning involves planting thoughts from the conscious mind into the unconscious mind. 24:11 Perceptions about oneself often reside in the subconscious and can affect behavior and self-esteem. 27:02 Unconscious thoughts originate from the conscious mind and are planted through repetition and reinforcement. 29:57 Controlling what goes into your unconscious involves consciously choosing and repeating specific thoughts. 33:48 Thoughts in the unconscious mind shape motivation and behavior, and changing them can be challenging. 36:28 It's often more difficult for someone with negative thoughts in their unconscious to perform certain tasks compared to someone with positive thoughts. 42:26 Therapy and consciously reframing thoughts can help change what's in the unconscious. 46:55 Studying involves spending conscious time with specific thoughts, leading to learning and knowledge acquisition. 48:09 Being in an environment or community that encourages positive thoughts and discussions can influence your thought patterns and behavior. 48:55 Studying helps when it makes you think differently and improves how you function as a human being. It's about changing your thought patterns. 50:15 Study first thing in the morning or when your mind is calm, avoiding mentally stimulating activities like social media before studying. 52:05 Studying is influenced by your emotions and environment, so control your surroundings and thoughts to improve focus and concentration. 56:28 Spending time in nature can help build self-confidence by reducing the negative thoughts generated in social situations. 58:45 Structure your environment to promote positive thoughts and avoid distractions for effective studying. I am a college graduate. The key differences that I made during my studies is that no matter what the subject is, I tried to understand the topic and what is being said in given text and why it's being said. Instead of plain, reading and trying to memorize, which is something I did in elementary and high school because that's what everyone else did. If I couldn't understand or I couldn't see why it's being said, I would stop there and solve that first and then move to next thing because for me understanding equals knowledge. That way, I stopped the ridiculous "8 hrs study with me marathons". I haven't done any research of how to study better, it just that's what I thought it was wrong. Oh and yeah, beside studies, I was playing World of WarCraft.

Finding this video after a long time of procastrination I am grateful to have seen this. Even though it is time I could have spent on studying, this video is insightful on the structural processes of studying but also how I will reflect on my life. It was a really interesting hour and I want to thank you for that. I have made a small summary for anyone else out there to give a sneak peek of the lessons here but I would recommend watching it in whole! Studying is the process of moving information from your conscious thoughts to your unconsciousness. This works best when your mind is in a calm state, therefore, it is recommended to study early in the day as sleep restarts your brain to a calm state and replenishes your energy levels. However, there is an interesting feedback loop going on between your conscious and unconsciousness: if you think about X a lot, e.g. negative emotions for not studying, your unconscience will keep feeding you these thoughts back. If you suffer from this you will have to spend a lot of mana/willpower to convert these thoughts back to more positive to start studying and by then not have the energy anymore to study. You can get 'stuck' in this phase if you do not actively reflect on what goes into your conscience. To study more you need to save your mana and you do that by training your unconscience to feed you more productive thoughts: reflection and reframing of negative thoughts into positive ones - look at situations from a different angle, change your environment to surround yourself with positivity, and set up different environments for play and work so your brain can actively change conscious thoughts without them crossing over.

Notes : • you understand things quicker when mind is in calm state (in morning) • thoughts originate in your conscious mind and then goes to unconscious • this thought which is In unconscious mind sometimes bubbles up back to you when your conscious, for eg : "I'm lazy" ○ easier to implant thoughts in unconscious mind when you are paying attention(mind is calm ) , or try a lot of times(repetition) ○ what bubbles up from your unconscious mind to conscious mind is what you spent thinking about , If you think about game that's what will come to your mind if you think study then thats what will ○ instead of your trying to force yourself to have certain thoughts and having self control , Set yourself up in a way where those thoughts come automatically by doing the things mentioned here (try to implant those thoughts in a calm mind , and in a environment where you don't get thoughts that are opposite to what you want )

Something I didn’t see him mention (haven’t finished the video yet and can’t atm) is 2 things. One and the more important of the two is that bursts of studying, similar to what he did every morning is vastly superior to cramming as an exclusive form of studying and you should start studying in bursts as soon as you start learning the subject. (Even studying only 20 minutes a day per day is extremely helpful for retention). The second thing is that cramming for an exam DOES work pretty well but really only the morning or day of the exam. Now I learned this from an intro psych course so take what I say as you will but the information is from a reputable study. Hope this helps someone

I like planning to prime oneself to act to reduce or use practically 0 willpower when it comes time to act. I like the idea of linking willpower with ‘mana’, as that would be an interesting video game if one could prep to reduce the costs of certain acts in a video game ahead of time. I also like having 2 levels of scheduling. One is macro, the other is micro. For the macro/big-picture, I use a Calender, where things are scheduled anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 or more hours, like time-blocking. I like the idea of having time boxes for stuff while not necessarily knowing exactly what I’m going to do then. Time boxes in general always seem to be theme-based, such as productivity or chores or research or fun. This reminds me of appointments, where one doesn’t necessarily know exactly what one is going to talk about, but one has some sense or purpose for the meeting. If I fail here or miss a time box, I can still be happy as long as I am aware that the problem happened, I take some time to reflect on what happened, why that happened, and I ask what could be changed for next time. For micro scheduling, I set a timer to help me know when I should take a break or if something is taking longer than expected. The idea is to be able to have the best of both worlds of being (1) laser focused yet (2) able to take a step back when I get stuck. Getting stuck feels like I’m pushing against a wall, when I should be searching the wall for a path through or around it.

this video couldn't have popped up on my feed at a more perfect time since I start my second semester of college in 2 days. I struggled so much during my first semester due to not only not never having learned how to study but also a bunch of life and relationship shit happening all at the worst times and my brain basically shut off academically for weeks on end and I can't remember anything I was supposed to learn in the last 4 months, yet I was still nonchalantly playing valorant and other video games and spending time w my friends. I thought it was simply because I hated school since I never enjoyed being in a classroom "learning" random bullshit all my life, but I still do really enjoy learning and I could never figure out how I could cruise through my early years of school but whenever I put in any effort into studying it didn't work. I was incredibly close to failing and being put on academic probation and looking back, I can say with certainty part of the reason was that I don't know how to retain information or how to properly learn. everything you said in this video completely changed my perspective on how my mind works in regards to academics and I am most certainly going to apply this and other knowledge I've learned from you from other videos and let you know how things changed from my first semester. thank you for all this invaluable information you put out for free for others who struggle mentally just like me, I hope you continue having positive impacts on many lives.

Summary tips for studying: 1. Study first thing in the morning. It is when your mind at the most calm and full of ATP rather than later in the day, when your brain full of adenosine due to mental exhausted from other activities (full of adenosine = out of mana) 2. Circarhythms- study first thing in the morning because human mind is engineered to be excited at sunrise and sunset. This way when you go to class you can review the material too. Optimal time for adults is 5am and teens around 8:30 to 9am. 3. Get into the right environment, meditate, avoid emotional spikes to calm your mind. How to plan the thoughts for studying: 1. We usually go through life with thoughts that we dont know where it came from. It comes from the unconscious mind. Learning is the process putting the things in conscious to the unconscious mind. 2. Once the thoughts in your unconscious mind it will bubble up and steer you in the right direction 3. So how you can control what goes to your unconscious mind? Repetition and reinforcement is the normal answer BUT 4. Its actually what you think most about throughout the day. These thoughts will steer you to that direction. What you thoughts become who you are! 5. Negative thoughts will cost you more energy (mana) to do productive tasks => having positive thoughts is a superpower. It will give you more mana to do everything easier. => Control what types of thoughts you spend your time with and your life will take care of the direction its heading. => what you planted in the unconscious mind will reduce or increase the expenditure of your self-control. How to generate the right kind of thoughts: 1. Spend time with positive people/ people who have what you want 2. If you can find them physically, online mentors like this channel helps too. Personal recommendation: atomic habits by James Clear will be a game changer to change your habits and thoughts by engineering your environment

Yep, my Physician father had me up at 4 am in hs and I dropped down to 12 in my class of 426. I got into engineering programs this way, but I’m not an engineer. So Nature kicking nurture’s ass. But yep this is all true. I can say that nope teenagers need more sleep but in the afternoon makes more sense. Kind of fascinating. So, I went to Montessori as a child until 8 and I learned how to learn… That was the point of my early training and with no tests. No tests except for the silly standardized weird things. I transferred to public schools and got straight A’s and an anxiety issue. I’ve always been able to study and I love going in to teachers who are not able to teach what’s inside of them and I’ll interview them for a while to understand how they ticked so that I could take their tests, but I would tune them out when they told us how to study for their exams. It never worked since they didn’t understand how they understood the materials themselves. I would study in groups and lecture it back to me and them and ask questions and learn it. I’ve helped a LOT of friends to learn how to study and learn. I’m not the smartest. My father is incredibly intelligent… med school intelligent, Ivy League med school intelligent… thanks Dad that shadow isn’t hard to follow in at all😂. But, I learn more, I’m better at learning because when you are only sort of super smart you learn to hustle it. I can teach all of the geniuses how to study, but they won’t understand why we are doing it. That can’t be taught. 😂😊😮

Thank you so much Dr. K tried out this method/timeline of studying and I definitely noticed a big improvement in my focus which is honestly so hard for me, my mind tends to run a mile a minute and switches around faster than I can process but this advice helped so much and my only regret is that I didn’t find this advice sooner! Thank you again so much, keep up the amazing work!

The FeelsBadMan thinking is so relatable holy shit lol I've been trying to try my hand at MedSchool but my GPA and extracurriculars are absolute shit that I'm losing motivation to even try at all lol and those subconscious thoughts are probably from childhood trauma. How you raise your kids is really important that has massive implications really far down the line

I really wished I had resources like Dr. K back when I was in university. Severe depression, undiagnosed physical illnesses, a demanding job, no guidance on anything, no father. I somehow managed to fix myself halfway through my degree, and did very well in my advanced bio classes, but at that point, the damage was done, and I graduated with a 2.7 GPA. It weighs on me like an albatross, and really makes it difficult for me to even consider going to grad school, if I can even get into a program in the first place. :C

Just want to say that I see you, I've been there. Do you have more support now? I'd say take the risk and apply, but not before making sure you have more support this time.

got y'all, i'll copy and paste the summary: Summary: The process of learning comes from allowing conscious thoughts to cross the barrier into the unconscious.
