Highland Clans - Episode 6 - MacKenzie (1/3)

The Mackenzies were of Celtic stock and were not among the clans that originated from Norman ancestors. Descendants of the long defunct royal Cenél Loairn of Dál Riata, they are believed to be related to Clan Matheson and Clan Anrias. All three descend from the 12th century GillEòin of the Aird. Based initially in Kintail, the clan was recorded at Eilean Donan on Loch Duich, a stronghold with which it was for many centuries associated. For generations, the constable of Eilean Donan was traditionally Macrae of Inverinate, with the result that the Clan Macrae became known as Mackenzies shirt of mail. There were also strongholds at Kilcoy Castle and Brahan Castle and the Mackenzies of Tarbat had their seat at Castle Leod, in Strathpeffer in the 17th century.

I knew some lovely MacKenzie's in the U.S. and the husband was a Lawyer and his name still lives on in an office that another lawyer works in as they did move away several years ago. They were lovely people and his wife played the organ in a Reformed Church in my area and we were dear friends, although she was older than me, and not sure if they are alive now, but they may be? But very, respectable people.

I think the original name of MacKenzie was MacKengie. Where McKinney could come made from. When the printing machines came, there was a time time when lower case z and g resembles very much each other, and the g was changed with a z. I've understood the sound z (and thus the letter too), doesn't even occur in Scottish Gaelic. I think there are 1 or 2 other Scottich names like that, which have the -zie or -zee in the end, due to these printing errors. Maybe someone who knows the Gaelic well could tell if Kengie, or Kenjee, (or Kenyee, they said the g changed to y or j - or is it Keng-ee) mean something. Ah, I guess Menzies is another one, for example should be Mengies.

So strange.. My favorite grandma, Molly Mackenzie used to tell me the wildest stories! She once told my mother, when she gave birth to another girl... that she should bury it up to its neck in the ground, and run over its head with a push lawnmower?! My mother thought that was so horrible of her to say! But later my grandma Mackenzie explained... She only meant that girls suffer so much in this world. She didn't mean it literally. She was quite a woman. She passed over 45 years ago and i still miss her dearly. She was a strong & very wise. My father told me she knew all the plants & trees in the woods, that healed every type of ailment.

My McKenzie ancestor was from Perth he was born circa 1820 but he was related to a Lord Thomas McKenzie... I wonder if some of the clan moved there after the rebellion of 1745-6 and subsequent clearances of the Highlands

VredesStall Yes. James VI of Scotland - aka James I of England. He was king when the King James Bible was produced. But don't be misled- King James didn't personally have much, if anything, directly to do with the Bible that bears his name. He wanted a Protestant Bible in English. Scholars and churchmen actually did the work.
