🚗 Mastering Rideshare Vocabulary: Uber & More - Advanced English Podcast
Description:
🎧 Buckle up, High Level Listeners! In Episode 8 of Season 2 of our Advanced English podcast series, we’re diving into the fast-paced world of ridesharing apps like Uber. By the end of this episode, you'll be equipped with an arsenal of advanced English vocabulary and phrases to confidently discuss ridesharing, whether you're in the heart of New York or navigating the streets of London.
🇺🇸🇬🇧 Kat, the American voice, and Mark, the British voice, are here to guide you through the nuances of American and British English as it relates to hailing a ride from your smartphone. From comparing prices between apps to the etiquette of tipping and rating your driver, we'll cover all the bases of rideshare conversations.
K: In the US, ridesharing is part of our daily grind. I'll share with you how I navigate through various apps to snag the best deal, ensure my ride is the one I booked, and handle the social dynamics with my driver - all while tipping through the app for convenience.
M: On the other side of the pond, we've got taxi apps that have transformed how we travel. I’ll take you through the simplicity and reliability of getting a ride in the UK, from double-checking the number plate to the unspoken rules of rating your driver.

good morning; talking about taking a taxi ,do you have to recourse to the police when is any problems with the driver . thanks for answering.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 7 ай бұрын
Good question - yes definitely. If you have any major incident with a driver, these apps have a "Support Team", who can also contact the police if there is anything serious enough. This helps people feel safer and deters misconduct from the drivers too.

Hi Kat and Mark, we haven't Uber app or someothers app, maybe I don't hear yet. But, we have more Breanded Taxi Companies, and we can call them by mobile phone, we tell to dispetcer person the place of living and the destination we like to go and they give us the number of car and time when will be at our place. We haven't obligation to pay tip for driver, but oif we like we do that. Greetings from Macedonia❤❤ Thank you for this lesson, it's useful like always❤

Wow - thanks so much for sharing! That sounds like the system we had before Ubers and ride-sharing apps in the UK, and some people still use licensed taxis like that even today!

Very glad to have you back And to enjoy listening to your easygoing English and watching your cute gestures . We don't have Uber here We have licenced drivers and small local Taxi Offices only using phone calls and both are very expensive nowadays which was not the case few years ago . I hope you don't mind correcting my mistakes or punctuating my writting. Thanks Thanks

Uber is available in Bangkok and the app is dead easy to use. But I have to wait for a while to get my ride especially in a rush hour and raining season in the evening.

Great use of the vocabulary from the episode! During the rainy season are there few drivers, or is the traffic just a lot slower?

A very interesting episode as usual . kat said/a more British Twist from The UK / What does (Twist) mean here ?
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 7 ай бұрын
A "twist" is like a "difference" or "style". Mark's script has a British twist, so it has a British style that is a little bit different from Kat's American script. You might also see: "It's British food with an Italian twist." This means the British recipe is a little bit different, maybe has some Italian ingredients included in the recipe. I hope that makes some sense!

We have Grab Taxi instead of Uber here. Grab App is dead easy and much simplified to users. Normally we have to wait for 5 minutes and sometimes it depends on driver location. As their location is far away from us, we need to wait more than 5 minutes. In peak season like office hours, searching Grab taxi is taken long time because drivers turned off their Grab App. In rainy season, we face kind of difficulties of finding GRAB as well.

That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing! We used to have Grab in the USA as well, but maybe it's become less popular over the years, I don't even have the app anymore, I think the most popular at the moment are Uber and Lyft in the US, but maybe some are more popular in other cities. Thanks for sharing, very interesting to hear!

What is 10%? or 20%?
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 13 күн бұрын
If we tip 10% or 20%, it means we pay 10% to 20% of the overall fare as extra. So a $10 fare with a 10% tip would be $11. Often we say: "I always give 10%" or "I'll only give 20% if it's really good service." Hope that makes sense!
