Highlight: HMS Repulse - The REAL Gem In The Dockyard

Forget about the Marlborough, the Repulse is clearly the ship worth going for. Surprisingly it's the free ship in the dockyard that is far superior. Great speed, conceal and highly consistent long range guns makes this thing a joy to play. Two games shown again, showing both advantages and disadvantages as well my first impressions.

I've played the Malborough and it's junk. A more one-dimensional Lion, AP is worse than New Yorks (T5!!) and the HE fire chance and 1.4 sigma makes it awkward. Better than the entire 2nd German DD line - but that is only because I like a DD to be able to do DD stuff, like capping, spotting for the team and harassing ships with fast-firing guns. Large, AP focussed DD's without hydro, with slow torps and long-ish gun reload, meh.

She's a good ship. Like Hood she's also deceptively maneuverable despite her size; you can throw her about when you really need it w/ SB on. Like, she can't quite dodge shells that are already in the air at med-to-close range, but my first ride out in her I was torpedobeating a DD and CV (which feels nice, because when she was IRL sank she did a very good job of that). Guns are also reliable as you say, and she's a beauty. And as you say, the guns are good (I like the British 381's generally anyway, tier 6/7 are my favourite to play at). But despite what she's in the game as (i.e a BB) you've really got to keep in mind she's more like a (very fast) heavy cruiser with really big guns.

I gave dubs to WG for 11 building stages, the first time I gave them dubs this year. They brought out a historical premium that was good, and good work should always be rewarded. You can still make money and keep people happy

I’ve had a few great games with Repulse and I do not regret getting her. If you’re a BB main then you’ll have to take some time to train and adjust to her play style but once you get into the “speed=armour” mentality then you’ll be in for a fun fight. Most of the time, especially with engine boost active, you’ll have opponents at long range almost always under shooting.

Interwar British BBs are extremely gorgeous From an aesthetics viewpoint I really hated how they got turned into blocky hideous monstrosities in WW2 However, that being said, I don't dispute those converted monsters were hard fighting ships worthy of respect for their unequal achievements.

Problem is it was needed. Ships needed more and more space high for things like light and medium AA, Radar (many had 3 - 4 different sets) and so on. Not many ways you can do that, the Queen Anne's Mansions may not be to everyone's taste but at least they were not as ridiculous as the Pagoda layouts of Japanese Capital ships, which were essentially trying to solve the same problem, how to add more equipment that needed to be mounted high up.

In the interwar years these ships were not at war. War brought on a variety of necessities for these vessels as mentioned by another comment here. The most notable was the need to beef up the anti aircraft defenses of these vessels. While these ships often operated in waters where friendly aircraft could assist them it also meant that enemy aircraft were nearby as well. The UK naval operations in the Mediteranian really showed how vulnerable their ships were to aircraft, with the evacuation of Crete and the resupply convoys to Malta especially, this was reinforced by the losses inflicted on the British in the pacific during the beginning of the Pacific war with Japan. In response the AA defenses of all Allied ships were improved, extra rafts and life boats were carried, new radars were deployed and more crew was placed on board. Some of the traditional weapons of these vessels were also removed at times to make way for the AA, as warfare had changed and more and more these vessels were parts of AA shields for carriers and used for shore bombardment instead of fleet actions against enemy battleships. This is more apparent with the US navies battleships, where extensive refits, especially after sever were salvaged after being sunk, make the ships look like entirely different vessels. This alteration of ships did not happen just once during the war but was constant with each refit during the war.

Same every christmas, people yoloing / not bothered if they die soon in battle, do a bit of damage and hope they are carried to a win for snow flakes in Random instead of more time economically running the collection of flakes via Co-op . So far the battles I have see a repulse in the Repulse are having great effect, that speed is amazing , at T6 if in a US / UK bb and you end up on an empty flank the time involved getting to a support position is glacial , this ship looks really tasty with that speed.

I just got HMS Repulse. I have played 5 battles so far. She has excellent speed and with an upgraded rudder she can manveuver ok. Although the guns dispersion is rated at 214m they seem inconsistent and are a bit troll-like but they do hit hard. The range of just under 20km is very good. Turret traverse is good and you can get it so Scharnhorst levels of turning speed. Secondaries are 'meh'. Her AA is not really worth mentioning (this is WoWs so AA is almost pointless at times anyway) and she hasn't "got armour" in the Battleship sense. She is designed for speed and can be a very good cruiser-killer and can hit Battleships hard if the opportunity presents. Tactically she is good for moving from center to flank etc because of her speed and can be hard for opponents to hit , again because of her speed. I use the 'brisk' skill with my captain and with the ships engine and speed boost she can re-deploy quickly, bringing 15in' fun to a part of the battle that may need it. She's good for moving up with cruisers and destroyers as well. Getting caught alone by a CV is a major weakness however, even more so than 'regular' BB's as her AA has 4km range and isn't very good anyway. All in all, she is a pleasure to play and is very good at Tier 6, 7 or even 8. I'd recommend getting her if you can and avoid the Marlborough as it just doesn't seem worth the grind and cash. this ship is a Warspite with 25% less firepower but gets to rove around the map and hit flanks at t6 which is a real bonus. With brisk, sierra mike and the speed boost upgrade mod it is fun as hell.

According to WoWS Fitting Tool Repulse has very slightly worse pen than Warspite (340mm vs 360mm at 15km). Shell damage and velocity seem to be identical

It was the way the British built their Battlecruisers at the time, the BC's would be based on the BB hull, to gain the speed for the BC they would shave armour and drop a gun for larger machinery spaces. The Renown and Repulse were no different. Essentially they were improved Revenge Class Battleships with thinner armour and one less turret, but packed in 8 or 9 knots more speed.

Warspite has 8 guns, DD turning radius, improved heal and very good secondaries. That's the way. Renown still feels like a better ship for sure.

I've noticed that carrier players tend to be even worse than they've ever been. The amount of times our team has lost a carrier when enemy hasn't even managed to push trough any flanks yet seems to be 7/10 games. Pobeda seems to be the worst, haven't seen a single one that finished even halfway in the post screen stats
