I was in the theater box for this performance and can't imagine why anyone would say anything but great things about it - personally loved it and loved the casting

I don't suppose this is available on video somewhere in full for purchase? I loved Lansbury.

Unfortunately - oh yes indeed - I have lost my dvd with the complete performance of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC starring Len Cariou and Glynis Johns .... I do have the 1990 restored tape ... so, if someone should own the Cariou-Johns excellent version please let me find it in YouiTube with my deepest thanks.

This budget basement production proves that less is less. Look for the original, and see this beautiful show truly come to life.

A shoestring budget production doesn't cut it. To scale down the orchestra is a crime. This was the only time Angela Lansbury disappointed me. At least I have my memories of the original production. Saw it twice on Broadway and the national tour once. Funny story: One afternoon I was walking past the Shubert Theatre and there was a commotion outside the stage door. It turned out Hermione Gingold's Yorkie had run outside. The pooch was caught and then she signed autographs. The only paper I had with me was a copy of National Geographic, so that's what she signed.

This production was an embarrassment. This being my top ever for everything musical, the ONLY version that matters is the 90's Lincoln Center performance. THAT is magical. This is, to quote @eoselan7, "Budget basement production"

Teapot S I assume you mean that the only version on video that matters is the NYCO production. That still pales in comparison to the original Broadway production but Paul Gemignani, the music director of the original production conducts, so the music does sound great.

Agreed. This production was tacky, from the cheap sets, to the tinny sounding little band to the funeareal costumes. Lansbury was fine but Zeta-Jones left me cold and some of the supporting roles, particularly Leigh Ann Larkin and Ramona Mallory were just embarrassingly awful.

@@sjcohen4444 I was there. I have very fond memories of Sally Ann Howes and Regina Resnik. It wasn't quite as good years later with the two leads speaking their songs but Marc Kudisch was a superior Carl-Magnus.

@Jack Mason You mean the New York City Opera productions, the Met has never done Sondheim.

@Jack Mason Well, that may be a matter of opinion. I know instances of certain opera performers doing extremely well in works of Rodgers-Hammerstein, Lerner-Loewe, 'Kiss Me, Kate', etc. Being a performer myself, I've attempted both. Not very much Sondheim, but yes, you're right, he's extremely difficult. And I did hear that the 'Night Music' B'way revival was very disappointing, I had considered going to it because an old colleague was in it, but it was not to be. When I heard the cast album I was kinda glad I hadn't wasted my money. Have to say I loved Bryn Terfel's Sweeney Todd, did you hear him?

As lovely as Sondheim's score for "A Little Night Music" unquestionably is, and as visually beautiful as the original production in 1973 was (especially Florence Klotz's jewel-colored costumes), they all pale next to Ingmar Bergman's magnificent 1955 film "Smiles of a Summer Night", on which the musical is based. (Among its numerous felicities, it features five of the most beautiful women ever seen together in one film -- and I'm including Naima Wifstrand who plays Madame Armfeldt, who had a more fascinating face in her old age than most women do at 25.).The screenplay is filled with pointed epigrams, as well as poetic lines and speeches, that collectively leave Hugh Wheeler's libretto for the Broadway show somewhere east of Suez. I've always wondered how a full-dress production that combined Sondheim's score, Klotz's costumes, and Bergman's script would be. Copyright law being the intractable thing it is, we will almost certainly never know.

Of all shows, A Little Night Music is NOT the one to do on a shoestring budget, especially with a barebones orchestra. It loses so much.

Why on earth are they all in black for "Weekend in the Country"? What a dreadful costuming choice.

This production was a monumental misfire, the only things that stop it from sucking the entire life out of the show are Catherine Zeta Jones, Angela Lansbury and the score of course!

I sampled some songs. It would be torture for me to sit through this terrible stuff! I do like good musicals of which these so called songs too weird. I made the mistake of going to "Into the Woods"'. So bad it made me want to avoid all of Sondheim stuff. I do love West Side Story and know he wrote only the words to it. I like "Send in the Clowns" with other singers. Watch on you tube Evelyn Williams on Ireland's Got Talent. At 80 years plus she perforns really well!
