I leased one of these back in 2020. I was 22 years old and suddenly you could get into a BMW 840i for £400 per month with a £2k deposit. It was an unbelievable deal and trust me the car was well worth the money. When the lease came to an end there was nothing quite like it on the market as prices had gone up like crazy. I absolutely loved that car.

For the interior alone i'd have the LC500. ..and then comes the looks which beat the BMW into oblivion, and that engine...🥰 More expensive yes, but not a car that makes you fall asleep thinking about it. @@keponen331 I disagree. I find the original 850 WAY more exciting than a Supra...or at least the MK4 Supra. If we're talking any of the earlier generations, including the MA47, we can have a debate..but no.. A MK4 Supra doesn't do it for me like an E31, 850 does. The GTR: I hear you.. at the same time as BMW sold the E31, Nissan had the GTR33. I do admire those cars. I lived on the same street as a GTR32 owner some years back, and it was a definete highlight hearing that thing burble down the street. Such a cultivated sound. My dad’s got an 840i gran coupé with a white and navy blue interior, and whilst it needs taking care of I can’t tell you how much nicer it feels than the all black one did. Last summer I set my heart on an LC500 convertible for all the right reasons; stunning styling, peachy V8, gorgeous interior if you can ignore the rotten touchpad .... and then took it on a 2hr test drive around Cologne, where I live. Shock, horror .... the scuttle-shake was unbearable and the fuel economy about 20mpg on that run. So, by way of a comparison, I took a BMW M850i convertible on the same test drive and enjoyed very smooth, rattle free progress and about 26mpg. It's now on my drive, and I love it. My dad had two of the original E31 8 series. He had a 1992 one, original 1st gen. Then he had a 1994 one, which was still original 1st gen, but better brakes, steering, it just handled a lot better. Both were 840's by the way. The 1992 one he had for 4 years, then sold it and then had the 1994 one he had for 2 years in the UK, then sent it to Cyprus where he had it for another couple of years then selling it there. I drove the 1994 one, what a motor! Effortless driving experience. I've never really gelled with this one, it just doesn't do anything for me. this was in the early 2000's by the way.

A fair review Matt, each to their own, had an 840i Coupe for two years and loved every minute of it. It had every option pack on it and when you learn all of the tech, it's fantastic (and you can turn the bits off that you don't like - gesture control and anti collision braking). Just for accuracy, in the UK, the 840i was RWD only, and the 840d and M850i xDrive only.

@@PardeepSingh-ls1vd I did strongly consider the 850 but I've never had an M car before and wanted to go for the full fat version if I was going to make the change! Sunroof is a fair point but my 840i never had one and I prefer the carbon roof on the M8 anyway. Comfort wise there's definitely a compromise with the much stiffer and sporty M8, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for more power and the much more aggressive styling. Having also had the 840 I did want something that looked a BIT more different on the exterior so the M8 it was! If I was new to the 8 Series, I'd probably say the M850 is the sweet spot between comfort and power - hope this helps.

It's an annoying trend these days; they add all the humps and lumps on the bodywork, 20" wheels even on a toyota yaris, then slope up the glazing,.. this looks cool, but many look more like hotwheels toys than real cars. It was great in 2000-2010s that, as cars grew bigger, you really felt the real estate inside, now they're big and cartoonish outside, smaller and less ergonomic inside,..product of our times, what to say.

One was specced similar to yours on the video and the other was the same but had the white (Ivory I think it was called) interior with the sunroof. I had the same opinion as you, it was a bit boring and uninspiring with everything black and a black headliner. I had a M140i when they very first came out in 2016 and the interior was bland on that, but like for like it came in so much cheaper than the S3 or A45 of the same time and in my opinion, is still to this day a far better car to drive. Personally the Gran Coupé version is better! But its predecessor (6 series GC) has a better exterior! Anyway, thanks to Matt's advice..... I've just bought a 5 series Gran Turismo 3 litre diesel with 245 HP and it's AWESOME! Looking forward to "pair" it with the 6 series GT and keep both of them till the end!!! Underappreciated cars which are actually........ Clever!!!! 😁😁 Greetings from Italy

I went from a 6 series Gran Coupe to an 8 series Gran Coupe. Both stunning cars. Sometimes I will sit in my garage and just stare at the 8 series. It's such a beautiful car. The weird thing is, the 6 series still felt more special. I can't put my finger on it. But the 8 series is missing something.

@@Manos-de-PiedraThank you! Yes I agree, both are great cars. Although the 6 series is obviously old, it has aged well! Coming from the GS, it felt extremely wide and long. However, after three months of ownership (plus the convenience of the 360 cameras), it feels like a normal sized car.

Thanks for doing this review Matt. Despite being a base model that car is spec’d very well, Driving Assistant Plus (auto steering) is not a feature you see often. When you were trying to change the radio channel I’m pretty sure on this version the gesture is a two-fingered stabbing motion, not the more logical swipe gesture that you were doing. That’s the case in my girlfriend’s X3. I have a 640d M Sport (which, by the way, I’ve never really loved as was the case with you and your 6 series convertible) and I’m pretty sure the 8 will be my next car. As @chrischambers6069 said they’re great value for the money.

It’s a beautiful car. And the radio volume is DEFINITELY not a gimmick. I use it all the time on my 5 series. It saves you fiddling around and trying to find the volume button and taking your hand off the gear stick and getting distracted from the road. You can kese your concentration and just turn the volume up and down just like magic. Don’t just jump to conclusions and call it a gimmick

I drive a 840 and have driven BMWs for over 20 years from the five series to the seven series. The last car was a 550M. I can say the 8 is the best BMW I've driven. You can change stations and the guesture control is awesome.

I’ve had my 840i for 3 years now. It’ll probably be the last BMW I have: had them for nearly 30 years, tried one of everything. The new BMW’s are a step down (was in the dealership this morning for the 8’s first MOT), had a look around the new 5 series and it’s just cheap looking. The interior is even more bland than the 8, full of drab plastic and cloth and it’s a £100k car. That’s Porsche money. It’s where I’m looking at when it’s time. For now though, I still enjoy the 8 - it’s not a daily driver, I’ve got a 520d for that, so the 8 still feels special when I use it. By the way, I had the 640d back in the day, and I think it was better than the 8 ever so slightly.

BMW have lost the plot! If I was in charge I'd take them back to their roots. Front engine, rwd, petrol, lsd, manual, 50 50 weight distribution, stiff chassis not massive, minimum computers, remove all the plastic, make them handmade. I'd only have them sell the 3 series comprising of the E30, e36, E46, 5 series, e28, E34 and e39, 6 series e24, e63, 7 series e23, E38 and lastly the e31 8 series. All the other models are hedious the grills look like a beaver! 😂

I have an '08 650i and while the LC500 V8 is the dream replacement (The one Matt tested in red with tan interior is bedroom poster-worthy), but I do find myself eyeing the 840i from time to time, but I have the same problem as Matt; it doesn't stir my soul. Even worse, I look at what an 840i does and all I can think is it's no better than my old 650i. I have no doubt it handles better on a backroad, but it's much heavier, no faster and the same on fuel. I like the quirky looks of my car, the 8-Series is very 'safe'; standard BMW (before they went crazy). All it's really got is the ultra-modern tech, and by it's nature, tech is hard to be passionate about and so it doesn't tickle me in the right places the way the Lexus does. And if I wanted to replace my car on a bit of a budget, the last-gen 6-Series coupe is even cheaper than the 8's. However, if someone I knew bought an 840i, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it. I love 2+2 GTs and they seem to be a dying breed so even a slightly generic one like the 840i is worthy.

I had a 2012 640d and absolutely loved it. Was a bit harsh suspension wise though. Beautiful car though. Changed it for an Audi A7 which I originally hated then grew to love over the 3 years of ownership although it was never a driver's car. Lusted after the 8 series but was too new and expensive as a second hander so bought an Audi A8 (like yours recently) which was a lovely but boring car to drive. The 8 series was now coming within my budget so I now have an 840 GranCoupe which is a far more exciting car than the Audi. I've had a Merc CLS, BMW 6(2 Generations) AudiA7, AudiA8 and this BM is my favourite. The interior is better than the Audi's but not quite as dramatic as more expensive vehicles. At least it's not a Mercedes. Possibly the cheapest "premium" manufacturer.

On the one hand you say the inline-6 is plenty of engine, don't worry about going for the V8 or the M-car; on the other hand you say it's not exciting enough for you to want it, even used and at a steep discount. I'm wondering, do you think the M850i (more modern car) or the 850i in 2019 might have changed your mind at all? I have driven that BMW V8 in an M550i and was quite impressed.

I drove the 850 coupe for a few days and it also left me sort of nonplussed. Not exciting in any way. I like the 850 or M8 Gran Coupe but also concerned that it just won’t be exciting enough. I agree with you on Lexus LC, even though it’s a bit slow. In the end, some sort of 911 or high spec Panamera would probably be more exciting.
