Hi Wole, thanks so much for your kind words. My advise would be start small doing dining pads and small jobs that aren't daunting. Reupholstery is also a great place to start as when you are taking the old fabric off you can see how it was attached originally and learn that way. Really good channel and videos. I am looking to upgrade to some proper shears. The links you have on on your videos are for two different models. The Wiss 1226 and Wiss W20. Which do you use and what is the difference between them? Also I see you use the longer 12 inch ones. What would I need to consider for what length to get?

Hey thanks for watching my videos, I really appreciate it! I use the 12 inch as I was a cutter before I was an upholsterer and the 12 inch I found easier to use and quicker to cut with. It’s up to you the length you get but I’d always recommend the 12 inch. I personally use the Wiss W1226 and can’t fault them but Wiss is a great make whichever you decide to go with 👍🏻 I couldn’t find the 1226 in the US store but the W20 is similar.

Hi Johnathan! Good for you, I wish I had found upholstery straight out of school! Learn as much as you can from the experienced upholsterers and get stuck in as much as they’ll let you - be a sponge and take in everything they tell you. Practice at home - even if it’s just back tacking and metal gripping and watch as many videos as you can. Definitely learn the whole trade, cutting, sewing and upholstering and you’ll do great 😊👍🏻

Great confidence giving video... As all yours really ARE! Keep up the good work! Can I ask a couple of questions? 1.. How much fabric did you use to re cover this chair? 2..Could the boarder sections be cut in one strip or is a join better I realise you were going in the direction of the nap,... But for a plainer fabric? 3..Could the seat and back seams be piped as well and fitted the same way? 4..Can the seat and back be completely finished and then put back in the frame? I am only asking because I have the same chair and have ordered a new sofa and 4 meters of extra fabric to cover the chair...Many thanks.

Thank you for the lovely comment. 1. Approximately 2.5 - 3m. 2. Yes it's could be cut as one piece if it's long or wide enough, I was just following the pile ap. 3. Yes you could absolutely pipe them. 4. If they come totally apart then yes you can do them separately and fix them to the frame. As long as you keep trying it on as you go as sometimes It doesn't go back together properly then you have to take some of it off again. Hope this helps ☺️📐🪡✂️📌

How do you measure for material if you don’t have material for a template? I have a mid century chair that I found in an outside shed of a home I bought. It’s frame is beautiful. It looks either French style English made. It has wider frame and as it goes down to the seat it tapers down smaller. The seat is wider at the front and smaller in the back. The arms like sort of like the chair that you’re working with. I managed to measure and cut a med high density foam to fit the back and seat. I just don’t know how to measure for the material. The chair had zig zag springs in excellent condition. The original material on the seat had deteriorated burlap, horse hair, straw and cotton, but no material and the cotton had yucky mice droppings. So I through it all out cleaned and sanitized it. The back had webbing and only cotton only. That did have the material on it, but it was really deteriorated, but didn’t trust to use it as a template, plus because the bottom had mice droppings, I didn’t want to put it on the new material. Everything is cut out. I have the foam cut, cotton, and ready to put the webbing on the back. The back is made where you have to place the material on the back and the front of the back part of the chair because the way the frame is made. It had the indentation for materials around the frame on the front and back. I haven’t found any chair like that being reupholstered like this one on the internet. Do I use the foam that I cut as a template, but add extra inches all a around to fit and stretch?

Hi Julia! Roughly 2.5 metres for the chair and you can pick up upholstery velvet fairly cheap these days 😊👍🏻

1. In this example, is the topstitch purely decorative or are you/would you, if the original wasn't top-stitched, use it for extra seam security? 2. Why do you use staples over tacks besides likely quicker and more cost effective?

I’m currently recovering an almost identical chair in duck canvas. What if I choose not to sew? Can I just pleat the corners? And also is piping necessary for the back?

Hiya, yes you can just pleat the corners, however you might struggle to get rid of all the excess material without sewing. And no the piping is not 100% necessary for the back, I just think it gives a cleaner smarter look. Hope this helps 🙏 ☺️ ✂️📐📎📎⛏️

It looks a great quality material reminds me very much of the superior 100%Cotton velvet that was produced years ago which used to be very heavy and had a wonderful sheen that made it look like liquid metal. The stuff they produce nowadays is no where near as good quality. Goes great with the dark wood! Good choice! I’ll be checking out that company. Thanks
