Highway 1 into Vancouver, BC - Trans-Canada Highway - 2024/56

Filmed in 4K, 60fps. Metro Vancouver, BC - Langley to Horseshoe Bay. We head westbound along Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway through the Lower Mainland and into Vancouver. Our route today begins at the 216 Street exit, then crossing the Fraser River via the Port Mann Bridge (2012), then crossing the Cassiar Tunnel (1992) and Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge (1960) in Vancouver.
Our trip ends at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, where the mainland portion of the Trans-Canada Highway ends, carrying on towards Nanaimo and Victoria, on Vancouver Island. We also drive up to the Sea to Sky Highway.

From my experience, the highway entrance seems to at least function, and I haven't had much issue waiting for a gap there, but it's definitely substandard for a freeway today and they do have plans to change that based on the 2022 study. In comparison, that old Dollarton merge was really bad, with the angle into the highway being rather shallow. Glad that's gone now

@@xlbolt I forgot about the Lynn Valley Rd on-ramp, and I think that one is worse than Capilano Rd. The Lynn Valley ramp has a steeper uphill climb, as well as poorer sight distance (the highway curves prior to the ramp). As you point out, sight distance isn’t a major issue at Capilano Rd.

@@xlbolt Also, completely unrelated: I just did a trip down to Bellingham but via BC-13/WA-539. I don’t think WA-539 has been filmed before between the border and Bellingham. I will upload it as soon as I get some time to edit. 🙂

Lynn Valley is pretty bad as well with sight lines, but typically there is enough space to make a gap there to make it somewhat workable, as compared to that Dollarton ramp, where there was a point when traffic was very saturated (but not enough that it slowed traffic to allow stop-merging) where it could be very difficult to get into the highway flow

I just came back from there myself. Highway 1 sucks. It needs to be a minimum of 4 lanes in each direction from Chilliwack to West Vancouver. He began the video where the highway widens.
