I recently traveled from Sacramento to San Diego. Also did some exploring around Joshua Tree for the first time. My girlfriend and I hiked on foot around the Valley of the Moon in Jacumba, off of Hwy 8. We hiked up to Blue Angels Peak where there's an obelisk that serves as a marker for the border between US/Mex. It was amazing! Upon my return home, I stumbled upon your channel and learned a great deal about Hwy 395. I'm now looking forward to so many more adventures that I didn't even know existed. Thank you sir!

I did it back in '08 when I lived in Visalia. Camped overnight and hiked about 10 miles. Found out later that the 80's band WASP filmed a music video there for the song Wild Child. And Cinderella filmed a music video at Mono Lake & Bodie called Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone. Some little pieces of 395 trivia!

Legit vid bro, really shows the unique land formations. I know its not easy filming and narrating stuff like this by yourself. Im going to mammoth next week from san fran and I will try to make it to a few of the places you highlighted, you earned a new subscriber and i dont do that too often.

My memory from living in Mammoth Lakes over a couple of years was that late September - late October were best for Fall colors, especially the aspens turning around that time. If it's "one of those" snow years the snow will start collecting along the rim of Long Valley Caldera before anyplace else along the eastern Sierra and so sometimes the Fall colors barely last a couple-three weeks before the bitter cold overtakes the normal progression and the aspens drop their leaves early. But if you're lucky enough to catch it at the right time, there is nothing like it in the world.

This is such a great Video, which month did you go? I was hoping to go make a similar trip in early March but am unsure of the weather conditions, what would you think?

This video was in March. It totally changes with the year and the amount of snow so it is hard to tell this far in advance, unfortunately.

Fossil falls are the remnants of the old ice age drainage of the lakes south. When the lakes dried up at the end of the last ice age the waterfalls dried up too and left a cleft in the rocks. It has nothing to do with lava. A waterfall would form where ever there was a way for the lake to drain the icy water south. Look up a map of the Ice Age lakes which used to exist in the many basins which now are desert. Death Valley was a vast lake, 2000 feet deep! A lake which used to extend from Barstow and then east, also drained into the the basin where Baker is now. Look on the map for Afton Canyon. That is where the fossil lake drained into the Baker Basin. The lake where Baker is now drained north into the Death Valley basin. Many of the lakes were connected, but are now just dry basins with 'fossil falls' where they used to drain into each other.

How much would it cost to take a trip like this?
@californiathroughmylens

It is mostly just gas, food and hotels on Highway 395 so it depends on how much you want to spend on each. Also, you can camp to save money as well.
