Put annotations on for info!
Timelapse driving on Highway 401 eastbound through Toronto & area. I've always wanted to record this behemoth of a freeway in it's entirety, and decided Easter Sunday was the best day to do it as traffic/truck volumes are lower.
--Nighttime in the other direction: • Highway 401 through To...
My camera overheated twice during the recording (something that has never happened to me before), but I could still snap pics during the cooldown. After the second overheat I angled my air vents toward the camera thinking it would help. It did. Sorry about the lost footage!
The video begins at Trafalgar Road, just west of the Highway 407 Express Toll Route interchange in Mississauga and ends at Brock Street in Whitby, which is just east of a future interchange with a new freeway that will link to Highway 407 East.
The first part of the video is sped up 16x as it was slow going and generally uninteresting compared to the rest of the freeway. The remainder is sped up 4x.
Music: Time by Pachana Boys
Camera: Nikon D3200 with 35mm prime lens.
-If it looks like I am getting really close to cars in front of me, the lens is a bit zoomed in and gives you that illusion.
I have also added a lane counter in the annotations. It is not 100% accurate given all the lane additions/drops that can happen in a short space, but it gives a general idea about the girth if the road (if you didn't already realize it lol).
Here's an infographic comparing the 401's volumes to other busy roads:

The highway is so busy because there's 10 million people living in the GTA (Oshawa - Mississauga), it's the only east-west highway that doesn't terminate, it connects Detroit (4.3 million metro area) to Montreal (4 million metro area). The 401 at Pearson/Highway 400 has an average daily ridership of 500,000 vehicles. Lack of reliable transportation in the 905 as well as the insane amount of 18-wheelers make this highway the busiest highway in the world.

Toronto is always nuts during the day. I know you were filming the whole 401, but I always use 427 NB to 409 EB shortcut instead of 401, easily cuts 10-15 minutes off a trip!

Not in the world (that was erronous). However, it is in North America - yes, including New York City and L.A. Between US traffic, Canadian traffic coming from western Canada (only two expressways connect western Canada; the 400 and the 417 (Sudbury to Ottawa), the major cities east of Canada, and Montreal being Canada's most important ocean-going port... it gets really busy. What's even more incredible is how well traffic flows through the busiest segment, accidents notwithstanding. You'd think you'd be stuck in it for hours, but at worse you'll be adding an hour to your commute from one end of the city to another during really bad days.

I used to drive this every day back in the mid to late 60s with an Autocar that had a 250 Cummins and two four speeds giving me 13 forward gears and four in reverse. You can imagine how many gear changes I made during rush hour. In 81 I was living in Cobalt and haling fuel for the truck stop with and IH cab over pulling a five axle jumbo fuel tanker. I used to load at the lake front then take the Don Valley Parkinglot to the 401 I know it's Parkway but I seem to have ended up on it at rush hour. That one had a 13 speed Fuller so same number of gears just easier to shift.

I don’t think the main problem is the price. The main problem is that it was sold to a company in Spain. With that, the money goes to the company, not the Province. So instead of the money going to the province to benefit us, it goes towards a company just for that highway.

That has to be the dumbest part of the 401. If you live in the city you realize that the city grew faster than 401 at that time without proper planning, but wow, that section of the 401 should be used to teach every future urban planner the mistakes of the past. A close second is through Scarborough where right hand collector lanes disappear into off ramps. Again, a cost of "we never planned for 6 million plus people"

Uncorrect. 401 is the busiest Highway in North America, not in the World. The busiest highway in the world is the A8/A9 Milan-Como-Varese Toll Highway north of Italy. Only 40 km long (not 828 as the 401) with only max 6 lanes total+2 emergency lanes not as max 10x2+ as the 401. It serves a population of 8 million people compared to the max 3 of Toronto area in a regional area (Lombardia Region) that is 5 times smaller then Ontario. Peak passes trough 401 are well over 500,000 per day calculated on the max stretch within the Toronto metro area with not exact figures due to the fact that is a free highway. A8/A9 is a toll highway with licence plates registered passes and tool booths in an out, so each pass is exactly calculated by the minute. It cost almost 2 CAN dollars per km and have a peak of 254/294,000 (depends on the day) passes per day, twice a day (7.00-18.00). 500,000 on a 10+lanes highway of 828 km is not crowded as 294,000 in a 3x2 lanes highway 40 kms long. There is not an alternative like the toll 407 express. Rich or poor you gotta pay 15 CAN dollars a day each in that stretch of road north of Milano. Surely you can pass trough the normal road (2x lanes), trough the center of 26 small/medium sizes communities with average population of around 15000 people each. For example the 45km trip (from the main airport of Milano Malpensa MXP to the center of Milano), if you bypass the highway will be an happy journey of 3 hours trough 167 traffic lights (figures calculated). Watch your figures and enjoy the million squared kms you have in Ontario. Get a plane and visit and take a look at what is crowded for real.

I'm more jealous of your guys' public transit in Europe. Public transit is complete shit over here. In European cities you can live perfectly fine without a car. In North America, it's impossible to live without a car. And myself being an unemployed student, it's a pain in the ass when it takes 45 minutes to travel on the bus the same distance it takes 15 minutes to drive.
@bagnome
@bagnome 10 жыл бұрын
ElBarto3131 It really depends on really where you live for the quality of the transportation system. I believe the cities and states responsibility to maintain then and improve them. New York City has the best public transportation system in the county (Well I guess that is obvious the need to have that given the city density) were a lot of other cities that don't have very many people using them don't invest that much into them.

Does anyone know why this highway is the busiest in North America? Is it because Toronto is a horizontal city, making the 401 the only way to get across from one place to another, or is there just a lot of traffic there to begin with?

The section of the 401 that goes through Toronto, ON. Canada is the busiest freeway in North America although the freeway runs from the Ontario/Quebec border to Windsor, ON. Canada. The reason why it's so busy in Toronto is because it's the only non-toll road that goes East/West through Toronto.

***** Wow.. I personally wouldn't mind paying a couple dollars to avoid the busiest road on the continent everyday. NYC/NJ (where I'm from) traffic has nothing on Toronto traffic

I'm noticing you (and many other drivers) overtake other vehicles via the right; is that legal in Canada? Because that's really inefficient...

Passing is supposed to be on the left as per usual but its not illegal as I know. I always pass on the right when I can cause the cops seem to think the left is always the one with the higher speed on their radar
@pearcerichards
@pearcerichards 10 жыл бұрын
It's the only thing you can do because people don't understand that slower traffic should keep right, and the left lanes should be for passing. [edit] Plus, with this amount of traffic, there's less ability to do the "only pass on the left" - It's just a huge surge of cars, everyone trying to get through so they take up all the lanes.

This is a big North American problem. Morons lingering in the left lane, which causes other drivers to pass on the right, which technically is ILLEGAL, but over here cops harass drivers over speed rather than lane discipline. It's easier and it's a cash grab tactic. You can basically commit any type of stupidity as long as you're within that posted speed limit which is around 65 MPH. Rarely you see cops pulling drivers for not getting out of the left lane after overtaking or not signaling. But once you reach 75mph they're chasing you to give you a citation.
@snowballcorners
@snowballcorners 9 жыл бұрын
***** I first drove the 401 in the mid 60s, the police then as now persued speeders not dangerous drivers. Police policy and their lack of common sense seems to be the problem.

You must be from Europe somewhere. They actually teach people to drive properly there. Here in Toronto, people drive slowly in the left lane and pass anywhere and everywhere. Its incredibly stupid that they don't emphasize proper lane etiquette.

This is Canada, no matter how you slices as we say it here in North America. In the winter we have deal with these kind of problems, the same as in the US - north america. We learnt how do deal with these problems and issues. Please, in countries or continents where you have not deal with these wintry conditions than you are lucky. Please, learn something from the way we deal with winter in the northern hemisphere.

The issue surrounding highways in Canada is quite funny actually. Most everyone says that they just love diversity/multiculturalism yet most (real) Canadians choose to live far away from the diversity and instead commute 1 - 1.5 hours one way. This is one of the major reasons why our highways are so busy. People mouth the platitudes about the wonderfulness of diversity and seek to be as far away from it as possible. When the diversity follows us, we move one more exit down the highway lol, all because people are too chicken sh*t to tell the truth.

+UPUU - I agree. This seems typical for pretty much any of about 20 freeways throughout the Los Angeles area...lool. Also, the New Jersey Turnpike in NYC the metro area has a similar lane configuration and seems just as busy, but it traverses through a more developed area.

+Sean Price I would have to disagree with that. Here in LA you stay stood in traffic for the same reason, volume. It's even worse than this. I've been on the 401 before, nothing compared to the 110 in Downtown LA or the 405 near LAX.
