Happy 4th of July Weekend!
I dug out the old hammock for a quick overnight stealther. Things got pretty delicious later on when I cooked up a little beef and broccoli with a satisfying step 2 to wash it down. Best camping is stealth camping any day of the week in my books.
Cheers everyone and have a great weekend!

What you call "stealth camping," is sort of what I did for two straight years when I was homeless. I'm talking summer, fall, winter and spring, in the day and all night, the whole time holding down a job. I found it to be the ultimate character-building experience. I have a nice apartment now and a comfortable life. I know this is going to sound a little nutty, but sometimes I miss being homeless, evading the police, security guards and trying to find new places to squat in. It takes more ingenuity and guts than most people realize and it made me a more resourceful, self-reliant individual.

I believe humans, or at least some of us, have a strong desire to be mentally engaged and challenged but also see the fruits of our labour. That's why so many people feel lost in office jobs. It doesn't really matter, as the effects of your efforts aren't immediately apparent. You put in effort but you don't see any tangible return but money at the end of the month. And so you feel unfulfilled. Well that's just how I feel anyway.

I was on my motorcycle a couple years back. I don't like to ride after dark and was really, really beat. Pulled off to an interstate highway rest stop, crawled up on a table that had a small roof over it, put down my air mattress and sleeping bag on a picnic table... was asleep in moments. Several hours later, someone was taping on my foot with a night stick. State Cop.. "You can't camp here." I replied, "I'm not camping, I'm sleeping." A few minutes later he came back and tapped my foot again, I sat up and asked, "how many of those cars parked along the curb have people sleeping in them?" He replied, "Most of them, but that's different". I said "it sure is, because I can't stretch out on my motorcycle seat." He left, I went back to sleep.

I was on a motorcycle trip around the US last year, and found myself without a campground after dark. Pulled into a rest area, and was going to try sleeping on picnic table bench, but found it most uncomfortable. I looked at the full parking lot and realized that truckers and RV owners can just pull in, crawl in the back, and go to sleep. Automobile drivers can just recline the seats and go to sleep. So what is a biker to do? I just set up my tent in the nice grassy area in the picnic area, crawled in my sleeping, and went to sleep. No stealth, just common sense. After all, it is a REST area.

I spent nearly a year homeless, and probably the most frustrating thing was to get hassled about loitering based solely on appearance, while the well-dressed folk could loiter to their heart's content disturbing everything and everyone and leaving a trail of trash in their wake. I never disturbed anything or anyone and always left things exactly how I found it, yet I was the "troublemaker" just for looking downtrodden.

Highway rest areas being day use only is absurd. If someone gets tired on a long road trip, I'd rather they pull in and sleep than doze off behind the wheel and kill somebody.

That’s what I’ve never understood. There are government campaigns telling drivers to pull over and not drive if they are tired. But you’re also not allowed to sleep, even in your car, on the side of the road or day-use rest stop. Overnight rest stops for truckers are few and far between on roads that normal commuters wouldn’t take. It’s confounding!

I'll second the common sense here! Live and let live, as long as people leave it like they found it or better, its not hurting anyone!

No one enforces it. And its only in some states due to insurance reasons. They dont want accept liability for not having security.

I live in Arkansas. Being such a crossroads state, the amount of truck traffic is insane. A few years ago a law was passed that prohibited truckers from pulling to the side of on-ramps and sleeping. It was perfectly safe. Most drivers did it in pretty rural areas. A lot better than sleepy guys behind the wheel of a forty-ton machine.

In Australia there are strict regulations for truckies relating to hours worked (cumulatively) & the amount of rest they must have consequently, there are designated locations for them to rest in. They do have a problem with Grey Nomads occupying those sites so the truckies are asking for policing of the improper use of the truck stops, especially since there are rest stops for other drivers. In NSW (where I live) you are considered to be managing fatigue if you keep your caravan hitched to your tow vehicle. Howev, should you separate the 2, you are considered to be camping & if seen by the Police you risk a fine & being moved on. There is a large number of free camps available where you may stay for up to 72 hours before being required to move on though, that might not be inforced if you do not misbehave.

As an American I can say glad to see you drink something we drink when we go camping. I remember my first draw of Jack, with my Pop I was around 17 and he gave me a shot. Little did he know it would be my drink of choice for years. Not anymore because I gave up drinking but I drink through you now friend. Stay safe brother.
